Are brogues still 'in'

I realise that having to ask marks me out as a fashion amateur but still need to know... I fancy a pair to wear with some slim fit trousers.

I am a figure of fun among my friends for my love of popsocks. I can't go barefoot in shoes, I just can't. I'm told sweaty blistered feet are infinitely preferable to popsocks though.

CV, I wear thick woolly socks with mine and jeans/cords. Not a popsock in sightsmile

It's a long time since the phrase "pop socks" has been used on Style & Beauty.grin

TheCraicDealer Sun 03-Feb-13 16:09:05

Do you women not know about pop socks?! Not those skittery wee ones that don't cover your foot, the proper ones that are like actual socks but made out of tight material. Keep your feet toasty when it's a bit chilly, stop your shoes rubbing and from getting smelly nelly from wearing them bare soled. £2.50, pack of five from marksies.

Silvery gold I hope - saw the Bum lady had featured them in her blog. I'll be wearing mine with short dresses and skirts, cropped trousers and skinny jeans...they need to be long toed for skinny jeans though IMO.

What would you stylish laydees be wearing with your brogues? What trouser shape/length?

vjg13 Sun 03-Feb-13 14:30:45

The 'coming soon' silver ones on the Clarks website look really good.

Thanks for all the input. Think I'll get some cheapy oxfords first and if I like them maybe go for the clarks when the discount codes are out!

Brogues are classic british footware , they will never date.....

I wear the Clarkes brogues for work. I have to wear flat black shoes with my uniform (think female version of a mans' suit,) and they are fab! They are very comfy and hard wearing - I've worn mine at work every day for about 4 months now and they still look smart, and I often have to walk through some fairly gross stuff in them! Usually my work shoes end up with the top part coming away from the sole due to walking about in rain, snow and chemicals, but these are going strong, and they clean up really well. If they decide to discontinue them, please someone give me a shout so I can go and buy about 10 pairs! I would say they are the best pair of work shoes I've ever had. (I had a nice pair of Doc Martens once which lasted for ages and had a nice shiny finish, but they discontinued them, and they didn't look quite as nice as these although they were certainly harder wearing.)

Any solutions for what to wear on your feet instead of socks with them? I have Clarks black heeled brogues and love them but even as soft as they are I need a foot covering and all manner of footsies things I have tried just slip off. I want to get nude or white brogues but bare ankles are essential.

Snowkey Sat 02-Feb-13 12:21:46

Think I prefer Brogues to Oxfords. Just bought some black brogues yesterday but I'm keen on the paler shades - cream probably for summer and I'm loving the two tone? I like them to have a long toe because I like the look of long feet!

shop I think my explanation might have appeared to be more terse than I meant it to, so apologies to you too smile

shopafrolic Sat 02-Feb-13 07:55:12

Apologies Sansucre must stop skim reading threads. Thanks for the detail.

I do boots in winter and sandals in summer, I never know what to do when people have ballet pumps and deck shoes in in spring. Shoes without socks rub.

I end up in trainers and light coloured socks.

The DDs wear ballet pumps, DD1 carefully chosen ones because she's almost as bad as me. DD2 jazzy cheap new look ones. I'm envy they are colourful and fun, but they hurt my heels.

flowwithit Fri 01-Feb-13 21:35:05

Ha I was just thinking about the socks problem i will have to get some pretty summer ones all I've got is boring black

Startail Fri 01-Feb-13 21:28:40

No I'm putting you in detention, school shoes must be black grin

I quite like those, even though I always wear boots so I can wear any old socks.

flowwithit Fri 01-Feb-13 21:13:15

I think I might get the bodkin bone ones they look more summery and smarter than my normal converse types. I will wait for the % discount too

mewkins Fri 01-Feb-13 21:07:21

Anothet vote for the clarks ones. I have the dark tan ones and really like them. they have gone up a whole fiver since I bought them about 4 months ago. Inflation gone mad! I would also wait for a 20% discount code as they do those a lot. They are very good quality though.

flowwithit Fri 01-Feb-13 21:04:04

I like the look of the nude and the mushroom brogues in clarks

sansucre Fri 01-Feb-13 20:53:02

I've already explained it but will do so again!

Brogues have a punched-out trim on them, actually known as 'gimping'. The sole is also stitched on, and can be totally replaced.

Oxfords (occasionally known as Derbies) are lace-ups shoes much like brogues but without the decoration, much like these

Any other queries? smile

MerylStrop Fri 01-Feb-13 20:50:38

If you want to be all fashion you need

Nan shoes

faustina Fri 01-Feb-13 20:47:05

I think it's that brogues have the little holes punched in them, and oxfords don't

shopafrolic Fri 01-Feb-13 20:11:07

I have to ask. What is the difference between a brogue and an Oxford please? blush

faustina Fri 01-Feb-13 19:56:32

Has anyone tried the new Gap ones? (the brogues, not the oxfords) They look really nice ...
