Can someone advise me re Mason and Pearson hairbrushes please?

I would like to buy one for DD for her birthday. She has thick, down-to-the-middle-of-her-back hair and it's wavy. She will be 9.

She has to have it tied back for school so I need a good brush that I can use to get it into a ponytail quickly easily without too much pulling if you know what I mean!

I'd like to get her a proper brush but am thrown by the choice.

I love mine, it is the best hair related purchase I have ever made I think. I have fine-ish hair but a lot of it if that makes sense, it is wavy and about nipple length. I'm not an expert, but I was recommended to buy the mixture type by the gentleman in the shop who seemed to know what he was talking about!

my dd's both use it, dd1 has very thick hair

Primark do one for £2, nylon bristles with plastic flexible hairbrush bristle things (they look like miniature cotton buds and are bendy, widely spaced in the centre of each nylon bristle cluster) and a wooden handle, same shape as an oval Mason and Pearson. I bulk buy them since they're so cheap, really fantastic brush that gets through knots and lugs quickly and pain free as poss.

I hate these brushes. I have thick hair and these bristle brushes just cannet get through the thickness of my hair and brush it properly.

I also find my hair goes static with a bristle brush which is infuriating

bootsy - thats a lot of money to spend on brushes - mine was 50 quid back in 1984 and 29 years later I work that out to be far cheaper than primark brushes at 2 pound each time and you need to bulk buy them.

Sounds like an expensive do

Way better for dds thick long hair than the tangle teaser. She does have to brush under as well as over but it's the best brush she's had. Went for bn 2 I think.

but they cause frizz and I can't brush under on my scalp and these brushes don't go through the hair all the way down to my scalp.

Ivykaty I only bulk buy them because their so cheap and I fear they may stop making them. I have one in each room of the house and one for handbag, I always buy one and some Primark elastic hair bobbles for friends labour bags, so handy. For £2 you might as well give one a go

I don't understand the fuss about M and P hairbrushes - isn't the purpose of a hairbrush to detangle, in which case a decent vent hairbrush will do the job? Am I really missing a trick?

Oh - am a total fan... Buy the bristle and nylon mix, as pure bristle can make your hair static... I still have the one my mum gave me at 16, and I'm nearly 41!
Both my dd's have them , oldest has nearly waist length hair.. And Lexus have one in my handbag - DH has been known to nick it for business trips too -
When my sister lived in NZ and obviously took here with her, we used to have to send out Jiffy bags full for her friends after they had tried them

Still not convinced, only discovered the £2 Primarni brush about 18 months ago so I'll have to see if it lasts me till I'm 60

vent brushes are not kind to the hair if thick and tangled, a large paddle bush would be kinder than a vent brush.

I doubt primark will still be going in 29 years but mason and person brushes will still be for sale

Denman do a great selection of natural bristle brushes, with or without nylon bristles too, and much cheaper than M&P.

I have the pure bristle ones. The bigger ones are much better for detangling longer hair. I have the handbag size one but I wouldn't have it as my main brush. I love them. I regret not buying them sooner.

I had a denman at the same time as my mason and pearson - it was a good brush, but it didn't last the same and died about 15 years ago... I miss the penman for the smooth finish it gave

Primark will most certainly be here in 29 years time, they've managed 44 years so far so good and are managing to expand their stores throughout the UK and Europe during a recession. I've been looking online at M&P brushes and I can totally justify spending £35 on a children's brush as a present for a new baby since its a pretty fair bet that they won't be receiving duplicate M&P brush related baby gifts and it would easily last through childhood. Couldn't part with the money for a M&P brush for myself though, if it included a cut and blow in the price I'd be we'll up for it

lets hope primark doesn't go the way that woolworth did - I bet no one thought in 2008 they would go bust - but they did, for a store like primark if they aren't expanding in a recession then there really is something wrong

Exactly, Primark aren't struggling in the recession their thriving so there's nothing wrong. Woolworths must have been struggling, they certainly weren't expanding and improving their stores and although Woolworths ceased trading on the shop floor Woolworths still exists online.
