First with the high heel definitely too tarty. I don't mind the second - if you are going for a chunky look, which I quite like. And of course they're not flat, but wedges so would still make you look taller.

Don't like the River Island, I'm afraid - think they look a bit cheap and tacky.

Timberland has a good reputation, I've heard. But haven't tried myself. Those ones you posted are OK, though I don't personally like any sort of obvious heel (as opposed to wedge) on long boots.

Actually I disagree with the other posters. I love the first and don't like the second. I own both types heels and flats. It is all about how you dress/what you wear with the boots, rather than automatically being 'tarty'.

Well, if you're thinking of Timberland type prices, I'd definitely recommend Russell and Bromley - have had several pairs off boots from them, and they are not only stylish, but have really worn well.

Also a fan of L K Bennett, though have not bought boots, only lots of shoes from them.

I prefer my boots with a high, but chunky (like squarish, say 8/10cm squared) not fucking great slap of plastic and rubber) heel.

They give me the tall, but are a damn sigh easier to walk in than skinny heels.

I also like a well formed wedge. But again it must not be big fat slap sort of wedge, more like slenderish wedge with a "curve" to give it a waist.

I adore flats so much, the way they look, how comfy they seem, etc (esp with slim leg jeans). But I had to give it up. I have basically worn a small heel since my teens (mostly wedges, sandals, stuff like that) and never experienced foot pain like I did when trying to migrate to flats!
You'd think they would be lots comfier, but it didn't work out that way for me. I guess it has something to do with your foot shape or arch, I dunno, but it was such a relief to return to a small heel.

I am good with 1-3 inches, but best midway at about 2inch for most comfort. Not sure if genetics or habit contributes to this kind of thing but I was really miffed at first when I couldn't wear flats.

Interesting example: last year went for walk in a hilly region, many miles. Had a hunch to wear my cork heeled sandals with super soft sole (2.5inch heel) and was comfy all day. If I even dare to walk around city center for 30 mins in flats I am in agony.

Not sure why, but that's that!

Oh, and my heels are always wedge or block. I can't do a stiletto. They have to have a raised heel but be super comfy.

Sorry about lack of links....If you go with Russell and Bromley then I recommend the Aquatalia Gold & Dry for flats, they're very elegant without looking too clumpy. The Aquatalia High & Dry are also fab (they're the suede stretchy heels), but unfortunately the Duchess of Cambridge wore them so I think they're popular now.

Sorry but both pairs in the OP are hideous, imho. Love those Dune shoeboots which Amber linked to. Personally I'm v fond of a wooden stacked heel on ankle boots. I think knee high heeled boots look v Trinny and Susannah.
