That's it really. I always colour my hair myself (red) but thinking of going back brown as red fades so quickly . Just wondering if a salons colour last longer than one I can do myself.

If you are talking about red, then no, even salon reds fade really quickly. Generally salon colour lasts longer, not because of the product but because of the application, as it is applied just to the roots, then refreshed rather than applied all over straight away as most home colouring goes. The ends don't get so porous so will last longer.

Thanks Dolly- i'm thinking more of the brown being done at the salon.Just wondered if it would last better if they did it.

No not really. Just a more even application. Remember that colours generally come out a shade darker than the colour says on the box, eg dark blonde looks like light brown, medium brown can come out nearly black! I'm sure someone with home colour knowledge can direct you as to the best one to get.

Ah ok maybe I will stick to dpoing it myself as my hairdresser always comments how even I manage to colour my hair.

no, they don't last longer. I looked like a really sophisticated brunette for 3 days is all. Have you got a patient partner? mine got really good at it.
Also told in salon (years ago) that the stuff they used was the same as l'oreal castings off the shelf so buy a good brand ( may cause less colour build up) and diy :)

Everyone's right. I get my done at the salon because I don't have anyone who can help me do it at home, but even my hair stylist admits that reds fade and there's not much can be done about it.

Just a question, what's your colour now? If it's lightened you'd be wise to go to a salon to have undertones back in, saves it going green etc.. All hair except white has an undertone so if you're darkening you need it putting back in. But if it's brown now and you just touch up then you're ok doing it yourself imo. And I worked as a stylist and colourist when I was in a salon. Products have improved immensely.

Use the right products too for aftercare. You can get brunette shampoos/conditioners and treatments.

Thanks ladies- I'm a faded bright red at the moment.I alternate between a brown and a shocking bright red.I colour stripped my hair 3 months ago to get a very bright red result-worked a treat but now its fading im think i may go back to brown and have caramel and very dark brown high/low lights put in the under layers.

How long should a permanent home hair dye last, before it fades?
