What has happened to Next?

Is it just me or has Next gone all. . .crap. I've got a voucher I've been looking forward to spending for ages, but every time I go in there I just can't find anything I like. The fabrics all seem not as good quality as they used to be, and just, nasty. I used to really like Next. Has something happened that I don't know about?

I agree I have things from next that ds1 wore that wash far better than the new things I have from there for ds2. The quality has certainly gone downhill :(

It's been shite for a year or more now. Their discount shops in outlets are going to crammed to bursting with stock now because I don't see anyone paying full price for it all.

frumpy, boring, dull .........

Agree 100%
Almost everything I had used to be Next, DH too. But the last couple of years we walk in, and walk right out again. Really cheap looking material, boring designs, and pretty poor execution. What happened?

I think it's gone rapidly downhill in the last 2 years tbh.

Cheap looking, cheapo fabrics in shit designs.

I think their childrens clothes are cute. Lovely girls dresses.

NoVegBeforeHerMej · 21/06/2012 18:36

Agree, the womens clothes are shite.
Not sure what's going on there. Sizing is bonkers too.

Their childrens t-shirts are lovely and soft though. Seem to be the only ones DS will tolerate touching his neck.

Meggles76 · 21/06/2012 18:58

I have had some nice t-shirts for DS who is 9. Not so much for DD though.
For myself, I buy their petite denim as the length and fit suits me. I've also had a couple of tops from there. But again, less than I used to buy.
I wish Next would realise that I would be happy to pay a few quid more for nicer quality

The womens stuff is garbage. Cheap, ugly designs and unflattering shapes. And their sizing is all to hell too - far too big!

I used to kit myself out with work clothes from Next, no danger of that now.

The problem is that they bring out the same stuff year after year just slightly changing colours or patterns. I agree also that the sizing is awful. I'm a 10 but struggle to find anything small enough in next!

scarlettsmummy2 · 21/06/2012 20:54

To me it is only marginally better than primary but massively more expensive.

It's been dreadful well over a decade ago, in my opinion, I don't know about more recently.

AgathaFusty · 21/06/2012 21:03

It's absolute shite at the moment. Cheap fabrics and completely shapeless for most of it. Sizes are awful too, either huge or skimpy with some of the fitted stuff. Shoe sizes seem a bit out too?

Next used to be okay - but I rarely go in now.

I just think you pay too much for whatyou actually get.

ThatVikRinA22 · 22/06/2012 01:38

so, if you used to like next, and dont now (i agree its gone weird) where do you shop these days?

Report
UterusUterusGhali · 22/06/2012 04:57

The quality is appalling. Really dreadful.
Lasts a couple of washes if you're lucky.
I used to get DDs school shirts there because they were proper thick cotton, like an adult's shirt. The last one I got there ripped all up the arm seam the first time she wore it.

I have beter quality cotton garments from Primarni.

Next has been BHS in disguise for years.

I still find the children's clothes to be good value but don't buy anything for myself or DH - everything either £14 and worse quality than primark or £38 and far too expensive for rubbish quality/design.

vicar I tend to buy a lot from debenhams now, but I did like next as they have them in retail parks do easier to pop into than shopping centres.

AgathaFusty · 22/06/2012 06:18

Vicar - that's the problem, where do people in their 40s anolder shop now? I buy most clothes online but end up sending the majority back, but also shop in Debenhams, John Lewis, Zara, DPs etc. It's really difficult to find decent clothes though.

ifancyashandy · 22/06/2012 07:51

I'm 41 & shop in Zara, Whistles, Reiss, Jaeger Boutique, Cos, Mango, Top Shop, The Outnet.com, My Wardrobe.com, Ted Baker, French Connection & independent boutiques for jeans (7 for All Mankind and J Brand) & other independent labels.

If I had a Next voucher I'd buy children's clothes - if it had to be on me then I'd buy jeans (possibly) or shoes or pyjamas. The rest of their clothes are not nice at all and their sizing is all over the place.

I'm in my 40s and I buy casual clothes from Gap, Linea (HOF), Levi's, Muji and the occasional thing from New Look or Top Shop. About 75% Gap I'd say - mind you, now I'm in my 40s I have a wardrobe of clothes going back 20+ years so apart from jeans, which wear out and need replacing, and short skirts which I now need to have in a longer length because my knees do not bear inspection, I don't need to buy many clothes at all, so the 3 nice things that Gap do each year are more than enough for me.

Agree they are awful-I am quite frumpy and even I wouldn't touch them with a ten foot barge pole! Can't see them lasting much longer TBH- there is never anyone in there the last few times I have looked in there.

I have never liked Next for me, although DH used to get a bit.
Don't like any of their adult clothes now, and agree that the quality has degraded in the last couple of years. I have given up even trying anything on anymore, although I do have that PJ bottoms that I love. But they were £5 in the sale and not worth a penny more.

Kids' clothes are some of the nicest on the high street, and good quality.

I am 41 and tend to get my clothes from Gap and Boden (plain tops and jeans, nothing obviously fun and flippy). But I am lazy and live in the countryside, so I like anything mail order.

Report
ClaireDeTamble · 22/06/2012 08:26

I still like next, although prefer M&S for kids clothes, but agree the choice and quality has definitely gone downhill of late.

But the sizing Shock. I'm an 8L in Jeans but the last couple of pairs of Skinny's I've bought I have to wear a belt with. I think if I buy any more jeans from there in future, they are going to have to be 6L which means internet orders only Sad
