How long does your make-up last?

Just saw a Martine McCutcheon short while I was in the gym - looking at the contents of make-up bags and throwing the stuff that was too old out.
So how long do these last for you (or do you throw them out after a certain time anyway)?

  • foundation
  • mascara
  • eyeshadow
  • lipstick
  • make-up brushes

I thought you meant how long does it stay on. And the answer would be about ten minutes Angry. Bloody make up.

Anything liquid 6 months, usually runs out before then anyway. Powder based products - theoretically a year, but is to be admitted that with some evening eye make up type ones I will keep them longer as cant bring myself to chuck them. Stick eye liner 6 months if it lasts that long. Make up brushes last indeffinately surely as long as you clean them regularly?!

NOthing I use last that long as I use it every day.

Foundation around 1 month. But I use several on different days depending on my tan or how tired I look.
Mascara lasts me ages around 3 months- again i have several different mascaras depending on the look I want.
Eyeshadow - about 6 months since I don't use it everyday.
Lipstick only lasts me around 3 months.
Make up brushes - I have millions of brushes so i dont use one continually.

i have eyeliners a few years old but totally unused. Should they be chucked out?

No! They will be fine. I bet they are kicking around the shops way longer than that.

Can beat you on that. I have eyeshadows that are over 15 years old. They are pressed coloured powder, how can they go
Off? Things like lipgloss yes I can see that but surely not eyeshadow.

Mascara smells when off.

It's less about them going off than harbouring nasties I think. Hasn't put me off though, I've still got a couple of things I was using at uni over a decade ago!

Givingup, that's exactly what I was thinking!
But the make-up artist on the show seemed to think it was a terrible thing. I have never had any eye infections or anything.

I have a powder blusher I bought in Summer 2006. It looks OK to me and doesn't smell funny, so I'm keeping it.... Is that very bad then?

Apparently. Could make your cheek fall off. Or something.

I've only thrown out lipgloss when it smells funny... Slattern.

But it's a really posh Lancome peachy one which looks fab on me for about three weeks in summer when I'm not milk-bottle white. Therefore I am keeping it and hiding this thread.

Foundation, until it separates which is years!
Lipstick, forever
Eyeshadow, until it goes completely hard which is years
Makeup brushes, when they start to badly moult.
Mascara, maybe 18 months which I've been told is far too long but it seems fine
The only thing I've had go really bad is a liquid concealer that started to smell really bad after a year so had to chuck even though I had lots left.

I've heard of going out at night. I think I did it once, I can't quite remember.

What is this "going out at night" of which you speak?
