How easy to hem a pair of jeans? (properly)

got a pair of slim leg jeans in next sale for £10. Bought the tall, but they're very long! Would I need to get these professionally taken up or would they be easily done with a home sewing machine? They fit well otherwise and a bargain, so easier just to keep, I thought. Thanks.

depends on how fussy you are and if you can sew a little. they are relatively easy as they are straight - flares would be harder. for mine, I either decide the length i need then chop couple of inches below this and then using an iron fold it over and over again. you then stitch along both edges with a machine - ie top and bottom of hem that you've turned under. suggest pinning all this (instead of ironing) and if you are really inexperienced you could also tack it (ie stitch roughly in very big stitches by hand).

Or I stitch it up invisibly by hand. prob best if they aren't madly too long. if you do this turn down the top of the hem and do hem stitches about half way up...that way you don't get the nasty line that shows once they've been ironed.

if none of this makes sense let me know and i'll try and explain differently.

I would take them to the dry cleaners/ tailor and get them done professionally if you really like them.
If they were greatly reduced they will still be a bargain and you won't risk cocking them up.

I always shorten them myself. Would do the same as dreaming but probably hem by hand watching the tv.

bought some bootcuts and managed to shorten them. I did have to chop some off and couldn't shorten them where the stiching line was. just be careful how you cut them.
