AIBU to think I am too old to wear this?

I am due to go away for one night with my DH to his annual company award's ceremony - he has won some award. It is a bit posh and black tie. I have seen two dresses that I really like from Lipsy. They are both long dresses, not the teeny tiny short ones. They do have huge spilts up the sides though!
BUT since having my son two years ago I have lost my way a bit fashion wise and now feel fat and frumpy and OLD. I am 29 and a size 8-10 (was a 6-8 pre baby) am I too old for Lipsy?? Should I be buying from somewhere more "mature??" I am really struggling with this. I'm getting to the point where I'd rather stay home! In jeans and a t-shirt, or preferably pajamas!

A classic dress like the one you describe has nothing to do with age and everything to do with your figure imo.

If it looks good on you then wear it.

Oh and for the record, I wouldn't know a 'Lipsy' dress from an M&S dress unless the label was hanging out the back

No, you're not too old for Lipsy - I'm 29 and don't see why you shouldn't! Make sure you're confident in what you're wearing, the label doesn't matter

I am 42 and would wear a lipsy dress if I wanted to! go for it, if it suits you, and you feel happy in it, wear it!

The thing is I know on paper a size 8-10 sounds enviable but honestly I am a funny shape! I swear to god what looks nice on other people the same size looks hideous on me! xx

I think I prefer the second one to be honest, it looks a little classier? You could always have the split stiched closed a little if you wanted.

Thanks - yes the Coast one is lovely too, I was also looking at a chocolatey brown one from Coast.
Maybe I should just get them all??? And then end up wearing none of them ;-)

Don't run yourself down, sounds as if you have a lovely figure and any of these dresses would I think look very age-appropriate on a 29-year-old.

Don't close the slit one jot. I think we all feel fat and frumpy after children. I also think it's common to feel we ought to be somehow more respectable.

I thought I ought to "dress my age" when i first had kids (I was only 24) queue 2 years of dressy frumpy, now I'd rather dress in what I like and frankly I look the better for it.

Wear the very pretty dresses and know you will look stunning

If you feel condfident in it wear it, if not don't because it will be obvious to everyone that you feel uncomfortable.

I would suggest something like this maybe, as it is still formal but not frumpy, and not something that could be misconstrued as too 'young'. Easily accessorised and very classic looking.

Depends if you want classic/classy or trendy/fashionable...at 30 I would wear the Phase 8 for a work type do over any of the others, even my suggestion!

Ohhh, the black lipsy dress is gorgeous - and looks very flattering, imo. Wear that one.
And yes - size 8, 29, off to a posh night out to get an award - if you're not stealth boasting, you darn well should be

Phase 8 and Coast are going-to-a-wedding dresses to most of my friends (I'm 27).

FWIW, my gorgeously stylish MIL observed looking in the window of Phase 8 that it looked too old for her. If that's true at 50something (and I don't say it necessarily is!), then it's certainly a 'safe' option for 29 ... whereas Lipsy looks more like the sort of thing you'd feel amazing and excited to wear. And how often do you wear a ballgown?!
