I am v overweight (on diet) and am not talking size 18. I have a family party to go to, will I look ridiculous in a maxi dress, will I look pregnant (had a baby 9m ago)???

I'd need to wear a cardi / shrug too.

Argh - so ashamed , help!

You might look like a ship sailing in to dock.

But so do lots of people in maxi dresses, fat or otherwise Grin

Don't be "ashamed". Fat is not a crime you know Smile

Lol tatty thanks.

Fat may not be a crime but it is a horrible thing to be! (For me)

It's just a question of getting the right cut and underwear. It sounds as if you need a confidence injection too. So you have recently had a baby and your shape has changed and will be in a state of flux for a while. That's O.K. Don
't do yourself down.
If the cut is wrong then anyone will look larger in maxi. So what is your essential shape and what are the bits you want to work around? Personally I tend towards being a tube/ apple and find empire lines can be flattering as long as there is no gathering of material below the bust. If there is then it is sooooo unflattering. What size are we talking?

Depends how you wear it. If you could get one that was gathered/belted under you bust that might give you a bit of shape and a wee shrug over your arms would be lovely. I know how you feel. I am going out on a staff night out on Friday and wearing a maxi dreaa that I wore when I was pregnant (8 months ago :0 ), just waiting for the whispers.....

don't be ashamed! you have a lovely baby. it is hard to find stuff when you feel bad about yourself. are you short or tall?

They can look a bit like maternity dresses if your not careful. On the other hand if you find the right dress it may be a good option if you are as a big as you say.

Good luck with the diet. I can recommend running for shifting the weight.

My tip would be to try a size or two down to minimise billowing material. A shop assistant suggested this to me and i was sceptical as thought would not squeeze into it; tried dress on to pacify her and show I Was Right, and lo and behold, it actually looked much better.

I think even Sienna Miller would look hideous in a maxi dress. Just my opinion, though.

That could work lost. Has to be very fitted around boobs and skimming rather than billowing around belly and arse.

I found a marvellous dress in a place called Store21 yesterday. It's a new chain shop that I think are all over the place. It is long and black with multicoloured beads in a bib design and in a stretchy material that pings back into shape. They had them up to a size 22 for £20. it has a few tiny pleats below the bust but just about a third of a way across the front so is beautifully flattering without being voluminous. Absolute bargain.

I don't think maxi dresses look nice on anyone. What about a fancy tunic top with trousers?

Also noticed Dorothy Perkins have a nicely designed one that crosses over in a knot below the bust giving the dress some room but not a maternity wear outline. They had it in a deep jade green/black/leopard print and rust colour in a jersey material but alas too long for me at 5"3.
How the hell do you do a link?

copy and paste the web address to your message, then tick the convert links automatically box (this is above the purple post message box)

Haudyerwheesht I feel your pain! My SIL got married last year the day before my DS's 1st birthday and I desperately wanted a beautiful flowing maxi dress - I was a size 24, short and round - I cant even wear heels BUT I was determined to get one - Well what a DISASTER I put it on at the Venue (long drive didn't want it to crease etc) and I went about enjoying the wedding - passed infront of a window and nearly DIED I thought the bloody circus was in town except I was the big-top :-(

My advice - Try a few on, look in the mirror - take a photograph (After all this will be the memories you keep/everyone sees) But perhaps go for a nice top that comes in at the groin area, leggins and some beautiful shoes - then when you've been successful with your weight loss you can WOW everyone with a stunning dress ... I have the picture of me in this 6mantent dress on my fridge - I swore never to look like that again!

However - my cousin reckons there is a maxi dress for everyone - so Good luck!

I look like the entire armada with every scrap of canvas in the northern hemisphere nailed to the masts when I wear my maxi dresses. I don't care though, they're bloody comfy on a hot day:o

NB: I am an unashamed size 26

I think it depends on the dress. I am also really fat and always thought I would look vile in one but DD persuaded me to try one in Tesco and I quite liked it (also thought for £12 it wasn't the end of the world if I changed my mind!)

It's plain black but looks lovely with chunky jewellery. I got lots of compliments when wearing it on holiday.

Hello Haudyerwheesht

I too had a baby coming up 9 months ago and am far from the figure I used to be!

I wore this dress //www.joules.com/en-GB/Womens-Maxi-Dress/Dusky-Grey/K_LENERE/ProductDetail.raction to a wedding a couple of weeks ago. I'm 5ft6 and size 14ish. The shape isn't too billowy and is really quite flattering (and I look hideous in most maxi dresses!).
