How do I find clothes that fit, and also how do I not look like my nana?

I have what I would think is a pretty standard "mum" figure- size 12, bit of a flabby belly (added bonus of a section overhang), boobs that are a DD cup and have served two children well for milk but aren't what they were before they did, bits of flabbyness but nothing too shocking. I actually quite like my figure tbh, that makes it sound awful.

Hardly anything fits! Jeans fall down - they sit on the hips, so are already at my widest point. T shirts cling to my belly, then ride up, or are shapeless. Dresses do the same. Blouses gape. Cardigans fall off my shoulders.

My taste leans towards the colourful, patterned, darker colours type stuff. Eg today I wore a 3/4 length dark pink jumper, purple dress with a large flower pattern, black tights with white spots, red flat shoes and DHs tweed jacket. Hmm, that sounds odd, in fact prob looks odd too tbh (esp as I wear a flowery old lady apron to do the houseowrk)

Basically, HELP!

(Also, I am skint as a skint thing and a sahm)(and hate shopping and trying things on)

Ha ha you sound like you have my body, so don't be so harsh. I was reading an article that said pick three words that you would like to have your future wardrobe described as which kind of helps me.

With the blouses, have you tried bravissimo? Also tunics, leggings and long beads can do wonders.

I worry that tunics make me look pregnant - I have kids of just the age when I might be planning another, but can't, and have a belly, so people ask when it is due

Can you sew?

I have a similar figure to yours and tend to need to adjust everything.

Big boobs need a good bra and deep v-necks. Wearing a vest top under the deep v will allow you to show a bit of clevage. Tunic tops look good if you can tie them (or they go in) just under your boobs.

I give up with jeans. If you can find a nice belt and that works then go for it, otherwise buy nicely fitting trousers.

I'd be lost without scarves. Wooly ones, square ones, long sparkly ones. I must own about 30. Buy colours to go with your outfits.

Have a look on ebay, I buy loads of nice thing on there at cheap prices. Most recent purchase being this:

cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370482034604&ssPageName=ADME:B:WNASIF:GB:1123

I've also not been in a dressing room for years, the thought makes me shudder. Just check out the returns policy. If something is too big/small you can return it.

Once you get into styling/shopping it becomes adictive and you'll have a great time.

I'd also recomend reading Trinny and Susannah's books. I honestly found them invaluble.

Buy things that you think flatter you and then go to a decent tailor and get them altered to fit.

An alteration is not expensive in the scheme of things - better to have a few things that fit and flatter you than a cupboard full of crap.

Levis curve ID have been my life saver for jeans. They have 3 fits for different waist to hip ratios and now no more do I have falling down jeans that display muffin top and my bottom. It has changed my life!

Not cheap but a worthwhile investment if you want to wear flattering jeans

Wallis high waisted jeans are good. Also tops that are gathered or drape to hide excess tum. I wear a vest top with hidden tummy support under a top. I also get vest tops from the tall range at Next so I can tuck them into my jeans and there's no gaping when I bend down or stretch up.
Combats are a good alternative to jeans and are more comfortable.

A line skirts are good too, do you have a tape measure, they good for online shopping size charts.

Yeah agreed, the tunics needs to give you shape.

Dh may be losing his job, so I basically have the budget from clothes I can sell ( I have a huge collection of stuff in the wrong size that I have meant to take back, then lost the receipt, etc etc)

I find that stuff gathered under the bust accentuates my belly more than hides it. Have had to give up on some very nice dresses due to the sheer amount of "when's it due" comments.
