Are ponchos seriously naff or OK???

I really want a cashmere one like this. It looks so warm and practical and would look great with skinny jeans and chunky mid calf boots. But do they look like something dredged back up from the back of Sienna Millar's 2004 boho wardrobe?

Mumsnet Jury - please decide!

P.S. I like the dark grey one best.

I was at Legoland the other day and it was very cold but sunny, place was heaving and looking around I saw a few people with ponchos on, similar in style to the one you like.

I think there is a new style for this year and yours doesnt look naff. Smile

naff, wearing what is essentially a blanket with a hole in the middle is never going to be stylish.

Normally I would say naff, but I like that one.

I like them.

Had to look twice at the clothing on your link - couldn't believe they were advertising the "Worst Cashmere Henley Jumper"!Grin

And they weren't.

There's rub, Mme... they remind me of Meg Matthews circa 2004 but they are also bloody practical, I could imagine throwing one on for the school run and immediately looking quite glam. Plus they hide the more unattractive areas revealed by skinny jeans.

£150 is a lot of money though to spend on a 'what was I thinking' purchase.

I have seen women here in Geneva wearing outfits like you describe, which must mean that they are not naff.

:o

When I saw the OP title I thought you were looking at something like this or even this

That second link should come with a government health warning.

Mme the crochet ones are indeed naff and passe, they make me go goosebumpy; but the ones that OP has shown are not naff, they are stylish and cosy.

Mme - am loving the ponchos on your second link. They made my day.
Must learn how to knit and create a work of poncho art myself!

Think it looks ok as long as you keep any WAG accesories to a minimum, so no big sunglasses, fancy bags with gold bits Grin There are 2 women I've seen wearing them, one looks v nice, relaxed 'boho' look, no OTT accesories, muted or dark colours, other one wears with big sunglasses, overstyled hair, heels, naff (IMO)

Ahh...now I got it. Sorry Mme, thought you sent one to me but you're after one of mine.
But no problem, am just developing some Halloween style poncho ideas...the stuff nightmares are made of

Having been a child in the 70s - and not just any child but the dd of a woman that had her spun, dyed and knitted/wove wool she found on hedges, I cannot ever see a poncho as anything but an instrument of torture. Sorry.

I am sure you will look lovely.

OP - are you me?!
I spent a good hour agonising overthis one at the weekend but came to the same conclusion that I would feel like meg matthews or similar.

I love mine. Plain black wool from C&A, 19 euros.

diddl · 26/10/2010 14:17

Looks like a blanket.

For that money you could get something nice.

belgo · 26/10/2010 15:26

I agree, the one in the OP does look like a blanket, and why too expensive.
