So.... years (and I mean years) ago I used to do mini triathlons (3 min swim, 1mile run). A friend has entered a triathlon in May and has invited me to train/compete. But it sounds like awfuly long distances. I haven't swum in years, I cycle to work (3 days a week-hardly break out a sweat) and walk lots (with pushchair up hills). People think I'm fit because I am slim, but it strikes me that this would require a totally different level of fitness.
Do I have enough time to get fit enough and how often in the week would i have to swim/run do you think?

Is it a sprint distance or olympic distance?

It is possible, absolutely. Your best course of action would be to contact your local triathlon club who will have people who can help you out with a training programme and lots and lots of help/advice/enthusiasm.
