The rolling Football thread for Season '13-14 might as well start off in the traditional way with the same intro as did the original rolling Football thread all those seasons ago. But with the new tradition of leaving the musty changing room of Dadsnet...
We've been top heavy with premiership stuff but it's really for any footie played on the planet and beyond.

Footie fans please sign in with

1.Which team you support.
2.Which team(s) you loathe.
3.How you are getting your kids to follow the correct team.
4. A thought on the season (Premiership/Championship/Champions’ League/FA Cup/League Cup/all leagues world wide.)

Pan Sat 17-Aug-13 12:13:40

I'll kick it off...

1.Which team you support - Manchester United
2.Which team(s) you loathe - loathe is a strong word, but Chelski gets nearest.
3.How you are getting your kids to follow the correct team - dd: "I hate football". There's still time.
4. A thought on the season (Premiership/Championship/Champions’ League/FA Cup/League Cup/all leagues world wide.). Really enticing prospect in the Premierships with the management merry-go round, and big hopes for Scottish footie in general....

Northernexile Sat 17-Aug-13 12:15:34

Hello! I'm here and I support United. Slight concern re Moyes but looking forward to the season and seeing RVP pick up where he left off. Wayne who?!

Northernexile Sat 17-Aug-13 12:17:04

Hate City/Liverpool obvs. DD isn't going to get a choice in the matter. Living in NI now and everyone seems to support united anyway round these parts.

WildThongsHeartString Sat 17-Aug-13 12:29:31

Support: Glasgow Rangers
Loathe: no - one in particular, obviously there are teams that I don't mind seeing beaten, but overall I concentrate on supporting the Gers.
Kids: just not interested, prefer tennis shock
Thoughts: Where to start, in our current position we can only hope the only way is up with maybe some boardroom stability which would make a change.

Sparklingbrook Sat 17-Aug-13 12:35:42

Hello. Footy widow here. DH, DS1&2 support Liverpool even though we live in Worcestershire.

1. Liverpool
2. Everybody else
3. Not sure
4. Liverpool will be top 6.

Pan Sat 17-Aug-13 13:04:05

Usually love the start of the season - clean sheets, in all sorts of ways - hope springing eternal...or at least til October anyways.

Nothernexile - yes feeling a bit twitchy about Moyesy but the day had to come some time didn't it. Swansea not the easiest place to begin.

ArrowToTheKnee Sat 17-Aug-13 13:13:36

I'm a spurs fan, I don't really hate any other teams but dislike teams who try to buy every player going and sell the soul of their team.

I trained my daughter from early on to respond with "yay!" Whenever anyone said spurs grin Need to work on DS now...

No idea what's gonna happen this season. So many clubs seem destabilized by transfer talk, especially around Suarez, Rooney and bale.

Sparklingbrook Sat 17-Aug-13 14:19:35

Much shouting here with LFC v Stoke.

Sparklingbrook Sat 17-Aug-13 14:48:54

ooh celebration now.

Pan Sat 17-Aug-13 15:26:53

and currently top of the table!

Sparklingbrook Sat 17-Aug-13 15:41:30

Apparently so. I think they should relish it for ooh 5 minutes Pan.

TiggyD Sat 17-Aug-13 17:37:17

None. If you spend as much time hating other teams as loving your own you a pretty worthless excuse for a human being.
Don't have any.
Liverpool...after todays game top 6. Possible Champonions league.

DanFmDorking Sat 17-Aug-13 22:45:44

Man United players are thrilled Ferguson has retired.
Now they can get home half an hour earlier.

I hear BT Live Games had technical problems today.
Unlike the Arsenal goal line technology, which seems to have worked perfectly on three separate occasions.....

Oh no - ‘ere we go again - I’m still here - crying

Pan Sun 18-Aug-13 09:39:17

The more things change the more they remain the same:

1. I'm quite looking fwd to the first time Moyesy points to his watch in injury time.

2.Arsenal - what are you thinking Arsene? What exactly has changed since May 2013. There appears to be no Plan B or even amendments to Plan A available.

Pan Wed 21-Aug-13 20:29:37

Moving on...with no sign of BB yet, Arsenal are fighting for credibility in Turkey, and Chelski have designs on top spot, Bale has ticket on easyjet booked and Rooney is still unsure about who loves him most....

1.Man Citeh!
3.Got him a season ticket!
4. I wonder if this will be the season Arsene is sacked?

Pan Wed 21-Aug-13 20:39:42

hi manky! A Tameside Blue?

IF Arsene is sacked, who of worth and ambition would like to replace him? The info is that the set up is to maintain an income for the Board, not actually win anything...

BelfastBloke Wed 21-Aug-13 21:39:53

Hi Pan. Nice work.

Unlike Arsene.

BelfastBloke Wed 21-Aug-13 21:43:32

I've given up on Match of the Day. Gary Neville on Monday Night Football on Sky is much better quality.

Getting BT Sport HD for free through having BT Broadband is a good deal, but I haven't yet seen anything very special from BT Sport in terms of presentation.

BelfastBloke Wed 21-Aug-13 21:52:10

1. Which team you support - Arsenal
2. Which team(s) you loathe - Like Pan, loathe is a strong word, but Chelski gets nearest.
3. How you are getting your kids to follow the correct team - They know they can stay up late if they express enthusiasm for Arsenal matches.
4. A thought on the season (Premiership/Championship/Champions’ League/FA Cup/League Cup/all leagues world wide.) - With the other three Top-4 teams all having changed their managers, and with Arsenal having real money to spend for the first time in years, judicious buying in the summer would have meant this season was an excellent chance to seriously challenge for the Premiership. But Arsene has already blown that. Too late now. Another dogfight for fourth in store. All so similar to previous seasons.

Pan Wed 21-Aug-13 21:55:12

Hope you approve of the amendments? Dan was a bit quizzical?
Saw the ManU Swansea game on a free Sky offer on Sat. They tried with the TopGear stylee of having lots of blokes stood around whilst the stars spoke. It looked like a 200 pin bowling match.

JustGiveMeFiveMinutes Wed 21-Aug-13 21:58:42

Manchester United

Not too fond of City wink

No problem on this score. They are footie/Man U MAS.

Man United will do well under Moyes. Top 6 place but too early to say if they'll retain the title. Liverpool and Arsenal will implode under Brendan Rogers (don't rate him) and Wenger (the team obviously want a change of manager).

BelfastBloke Wed 21-Aug-13 21:58:43

Oh yeah, amend away.

After all, you are MN royalty. I'm not.

JustGiveMeFiveMinutes Wed 21-Aug-13 21:59:11

Mad not MAS

BelfastBloke Wed 21-Aug-13 22:00:19

Although it does seem you're drawing more ManUre out of the woodwork than I managed in previous seasons.

Pan Wed 21-Aug-13 22:11:58

I am merely a prince.

Yes, it's odd/good to see Moyseyboyz coming out.

Last I saw was 0-3 in Turkey.

And Chelski stole 3 pts. Maybe Holloway had a point at the weekend re big clubs..

Pan Wed 21-Aug-13 22:17:30

Just - I don't know. We have a massively strong squad, back 4 and goalie look solid again ( so long as Danny stays up front), and there is intense competition all around the park. I'd be optimistic about the title, and esp so if Rooney grows up a bit and realises he isn't a wunderkind anymore.

BelfastBloke Wed 21-Aug-13 22:25:25

I'd take FatGrannyShagger any day, at this stage. I wonder if Moyes would sell him to Arsenal, given that we're not really a threat to the title?

Better him than BiteyRacist.

BelfastBloke Wed 21-Aug-13 22:31:42

Hey Pan, for some reason I am unable to respond to PMs in my MN inbox. Trying to work it out.

Pan Wed 21-Aug-13 22:36:39

ah - that could be, at least for me, a change in my account - BT are closing non-BT internet types from their roster - I've had to change all stuff on line, incl here.I have no idea about the science but it's messed up a few things for me. Ill PM you with my gmail addy if that's ok.

Yes Pan, that's me! grin

Pan Sat 24-Aug-13 11:34:09

If anyone is willing to follow the fortunes of a 'pity club' (and there's a few candidatesgrin) have a follow of Coventry City? Relegated last year to League One and given a 10pt deficit as a 'welcome to the new season' pressie for feck ups by the clubs money people, they are now 5pts from 'safety'. They also have the ignominy of having to play home games at Northampton Town's ground. My CC buddy predicted this sort of scenario a couple of years ago and I said 'oh chill, nothing like that is going to happen...'

BelfastBloke Sun 25-Aug-13 18:30:42

Well done Cardiff City, beating Man Citeh 3-2. What an epic last 20!

Pan Mon 26-Aug-13 19:53:06

R5Live in the garden. Absent-mindedly prunning herbs....

Sparklingbrook Mon 26-Aug-13 19:56:06

Well I am going on a tour of Anfield Stadium this week. What a treat. confused

Pan Mon 26-Aug-13 20:59:10

Oh common, just put the ball in the net chaps.

I was dragged kicking and screaming for that treat a few years ago Sparkling. At least the trophy room part will be brief.

Sparklingbrook Mon 26-Aug-13 21:00:52

grin I have no clue about any of it. I will just smile and get my purse out in the shop no doubt. The DSs are very excited. hmm

BelfastBloke Wed 28-Aug-13 07:40:30

I had tickets to the CL playoff last night, but I chose to work. The fact that I had recorded the game to watch later 'As Live' helped the decision

As I came out of where I was working, I ran into a mate who immediately referred to the score, which I was avoiding.

Pan Wed 28-Aug-13 08:15:30

Classic, BB.

Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads - No Hiding Place, Bulgaria v England where Bob and Terry are trying to avoid news of the score, to watch later. And what happened was....

Wilshere's ankles must be made of stone.

BelfastBloke Thu 29-Aug-13 22:11:53

NicholasTeakozy Thu 29-Aug-13 22:43:06

I know a chap who's a season ticket holder at Coventry City. And Worcester City. A 2CW. On any weekend he's not following either of them he's to be found at Coventry Sphinx. So almost a 3CW. grin

BelfastBloke Thu 29-Aug-13 23:54:49

How was Anfield, Sparkling?

Sparklingbrook Fri 30-Aug-13 07:40:15

Morning BB. It was riveting as you can imagine.

The shop was unbelievable. Do people really buy LFC cat collars/toothbrushes/sweets? confused

Pan Sat 31-Aug-13 19:38:01

Coventry away draw today. Still 5 pts short of safety.

BelfastBloke Sun 01-Sep-13 09:58:19

Sky's Stupendous Soaraway Super Sunday!

Liverpool v Man U and Arsenal v Spurs.

If Tottenham's expensive-but-not-yet-integrated squad beats Arsenal's only-Plan-A team of technical midgets, listen to the anger from the outraged Gooners.

At least, those of us who are still in the stadium at the final whistle.

Pan Sun 01-Sep-13 10:37:26

oh dear. Every game will look like a crunch game now. But Arse would have to be lining someone up surely?

Pan Sun 01-Sep-13 11:54:42

and it looks like Moyes is trying to recreate that trophy-winning set up that he enjoyed so much at Everton...

Horsemad Sun 01-Sep-13 12:20:02

Late to this but can I join please?

Support Liverpool

Loathe Man U & Chelsea

DS1 hates footy but says he 'supports' Man U hmm - just to p* me off I suspect. DS2 is a die hard Red like his mama grin (indoctrinated since birth)

Liverpool will finish in the top 4 & I'm looking forward to today's match!

Pan Sun 01-Sep-13 13:15:36

<mutters something about scousers getting ahead of themselves...>

Horsemad Sun 01-Sep-13 13:39:15

'Calm down, calm down...' grin

DH is the only Blue in a family of Reds - I normally work weekends so don't see the inlaws much - PIL are OK really (for Reds)!!

But BIL can upset DS1 (DH ignores and wont talk football with him).

Just as well this is the first weekend i have had off since the start of the year, and BIL was not there.

BIL is not a happy Red tonight.

We are not patriotically happy Blues, but 3 point are 3 points!

A decent week for me on the MN fantasy league.

Pan Sun 01-Sep-13 22:45:30

Want to see some serious activity tomorrow. The lack of creative midfielder was never sorted out by SAF really. And Fellani isn't the answer David) No idea why Shinji wasn't even in the squad.

Pan Mon 02-Sep-13 17:52:09

Oh Lordy, what a mess. Herrera ( we already have Shinji) and Fellani we don't need/want a Championship player) are the 'targets'. We need someone to drop the ball on Robin's toe. Someone to sing the Song.
< Paul Scholes is getting stripped off again..>

Pan Mon 02-Sep-13 19:16:15

<still hoping we nick Ozil at the last second...>

Horsemad Mon 02-Sep-13 22:54:08

Watching FF - it's a bit like the last seconds to bid on eBay!

1. Support man united

2. Loathe city and any team mick McCarthy manages

3. Well my hubby is a pool supporter so no doubt my son will follow them

4.some thoughts.. Price paid for Bale is mental. Think will be an interesting season.. Can Moyes retain the title for united?! Can't see city doing it, but. Chelsea, Liverpool and arsenal serious threats

BelfastBloke Tue 03-Sep-13 07:51:33

Didn't get Ozil, huh, Pan?

The Guardian was debating with itself whether to include the umlaut over the O in Ozil's name. Their style guide says 'not for upper case letters', so they don't.

Getting Ozil is problematic. Midfield is the area we least needed to strengthen, so while I'm delighted to have him, it doesn't change the fact that strikers and defenders are going to be a serious problem when we get injuries.

At the game on Sunday, there was a heartstopping moment when we thought Giroud was injured and we thought, who is there to replace him?

In actual fact we do have some strikers:
1. Giroud
2. Podolski (injured)
3. Walcott
4. Sanogo (untested)
5. Bendtner (unable to find another club, and failed at Juventus and Sunderland)

If there is cover for Walcott in Alex Oxlade Chamberlain, Ramsay and Ozil, he could become a central striker. But it's certainly not a strike force to be feared, really.

If we'd forced Robin Van Persie to serve out his contract, he'd still be with us today, in a season where he'd be forced to perform to maintain his World Cup place.

DanFmDorking Tue 03-Sep-13 10:22:50

Ozil to the Ars-e-nal

BelfastBloke Tue 03-Sep-13 12:09:45

If that's not a chant at the next match, Dan, I'll introduce it by the final whistle.

Pan Tue 03-Sep-13 19:08:16

We missed Coentrao partly due to the paperwork being slightly late.

Oh how we will miss Fergie time.

DanFmDorking Wed 04-Sep-13 11:29:36

Mesut Ozil said he joined Arsenal to win trophies,
... good to see a German with a sense of humour.

Wenger commented on signing German international Mesut Ozil
"He is an excellent acquisition for us and should help consolidate our usual 4th place."

Horsemad Wed 04-Sep-13 13:46:17

shock @ Wenger.

Pan Wed 04-Sep-13 19:27:34

Currently intrigued by the BBC web site asking "How can the English national team be made great again?" Bonus points on offer to anyone pointing out when exactly the English team were 'great'.

NicholasTeakozy Wed 04-Sep-13 21:00:59

They weren't bad during the summer of 1966. 24 years later they were almost as good. Since that, nah... grin

Pan Wed 04-Sep-13 21:12:55

1966? When it was at home and they had to rely on Rattin the Argentine captain to be sent off (on a really minor infringement) in the quarter-final and of course in the final the Russian linesman to give a none-goal, AND with fans on the pitch for the last goal. The final should have gone to ET, at least.
England have never been great, and the failure to qualify for any World Cup throughout the 1970s (when Scotland couldn't stop qualifying) confirmed that historically. Fwd to relying on a non-free kick in the play-offs against Greece 2001 at Old Trafford, and dismal failures since. <sorry to pile it on.grin>

BelfastBloke Sat 07-Sep-13 09:41:43

Surely greatness was ensured last night?

I mean, beating Moldova 4-0?

misterspock Tue 10-Sep-13 12:56:13

1. Which team you support - Wigan
2. Which team(s) you loathe - I don't particularly loathe any team, maybe Bolton or Stoke at a push though.
3. How you are getting your kids to follow the correct team - 1st baby still on the way so I'm considering my options. Might use footie as a chance to bond maybe.
4. A thought on the season (Premiership/Championship/Champions’ League/FA Cup/League Cup/all leagues world wide.) - Automatic promotion looked to be on the cards for Wigan this year but we've drawn a few too many so far and if that continues we might only make the play-offs. I'm hoping for a decent show in Europa, get past the group stages at least. As for the PL I think City or Chelsea for the title, I'm looking forward to seeing how Arsenal do with Ozil, Giroud should get a bag full with his service. Tottenham could do really well too, even without Bale.

BelfastBloke Thu 12-Sep-13 07:28:24

now that the interlull is over, looking forward to seeing how Ozil integrates.

Pan Sat 14-Sep-13 12:17:57

Having indeed established England's greatness with a masterclass against Ukraine (in 'my' stadium..), back to Planet Earth.

Fellaine, the new Keane? Admirable ambition at least. We've a few 'easy' games coming up which should mean a resumption of normal service at the top.

Coventry still eating up the points.

weregonnaneedasmallerPan Sun 22-Sep-13 13:12:26

And the second of the easy games coming has mentioned the prospect of Fellaini v Toure down the middle, though it is set up for a Wayne of The Rovers day.

Paulo - what were you thinking? Or..,or not.

weregonnaneedasmallerPan Sun 22-Sep-13 13:32:16

Lordy, just seen "the most feared striker in Europe" on Arse's bench. With that and Eto'o/Torres at Chelsea. Interesting...

weregonnaneedasmallerPan Sun 22-Sep-13 20:40:30

Really uncomfortable feelings pre-match lived out. I wouldn't blame Wayne if he tossed his toys out. And Fellaine v Toure was always going to be a mismatch. And I'd said some 3-4 threads up Aguero was the only Citeh player I coveted. Damn.

DH said Rooney was the only Red that turned up - he and DS1 got home after the match hoarse and exhausted.

Kompany was impressive - we really miss him when he is out.

Toure is a City legend.

DanFmDorking Mon 23-Sep-13 21:10:36

DH said Rooney was the only Red that turned up

I've always thought Manchester United are a one man team.
Unfortunately he retired last season.

BelfastBloke Tue 24-Sep-13 07:18:05

I took a Man Utd mate to his first game at Ashburton Grove.

He was having a really good day until we went into an Arsenal pub and watched the Manchester Derby.

Horsemad Tue 24-Sep-13 14:17:39

Looking forward to tomorrow's match v Man U - Suarez is allowed back after his ban. smile

weregonnaneedasmallerPan Tue 24-Sep-13 19:23:47

BB shock What manner of heretical lunacy led a ManUer to allow you to take him up the Arse?
Madness I tell you.

BelfastBloke Tue 24-Sep-13 23:43:06

Man U mates - everyone's got at least one. You just have to negotiate the situation as best you can.

DanFmDorking Wed 25-Sep-13 22:45:41

Phew! - Chelsea next
I’m exhausted just listening to Radio 5 live extra added additional superfluous, they were going hoarse.

Oh dear. We need to drop Joe Hart for a while, he is too complacent.

Pan Mon 30-Sep-13 20:58:23

Getting to know what it's like to be 'ordinary'.

Won't last

DanFmDorking Tue 01-Oct-13 14:32:04

Man U have dropped 'The Red Devils' nickname, they'll now be known as 'The Port Talbot'.
Because they're between Cardiff and Swansea.

Horsemad Tue 01-Oct-13 15:32:38

grin grin grin

I have to say though,, City are u convincing too

BelfastBloke Wed 02-Oct-13 14:16:19

I started singing "Ozil to the Ars-e-nal" last night, Dan. Couldn't tell if people already knew it or not, but thousands joined in quite quickly.

Horsemad Wed 02-Oct-13 14:36:07

Everytime I hear his name I hear that chant in my head!

DanFmDorking Wed 02-Oct-13 17:38:20

BB brilliant grin

Pan Sat 05-Oct-13 17:21:15

another 3pts for the mighty Sky Blues - an away win at Stevenage.

Horsemad Sat 05-Oct-13 18:22:50

Back at the top! grin

Pan Sat 05-Oct-13 18:24:44

0-1 down at managerless, bottom of the table Black can't get worse, can it?

Horsemad Sat 05-Oct-13 18:44:52

Pan, have you given up Strictly? They were asking after you last week.

Pan Sat 05-Oct-13 19:15:03

that makes my sequins twinkle*Horsemad*.

it's just a time thing. And dd is now an X-factor queen. So, dd v Aliona has only one winner!

2-1. Phew.

Horsemad Sat 05-Oct-13 20:00:24

Pan you have to google Sophie Ellis Bextor's Charleston from tonight's show. A-maz-ing.

Oh, and brainwash DD to be a Strictly fan! smile

80sbabe Sun 06-Oct-13 00:02:00

Only just come across this thread, so I am seriously late joining in - but what the heck ? I think I will anyway smile
1.Which team you support. Man Utd - been a Red all my life like most of my family. I have a distant cousin who supports Citeh but we don't talk about him grin
2.Which team(s) you loathe. Citeh (obviously); Not so keen on Chelsea, Leeds or Liverpool either.
3.How you are getting your kids to follow the correct team. Well they don't get fed if they don't swear allegiance to The Theatre of Dreams grin. Seriously though, in our house I support Man U and DH is a Hammer - it's not a difficult decision to choose between them is it ? Four DC and DH hasn't got a single comrade yet - can't imagine why that would be ?hmm My eldest DS has a Man U season ticket and attends every home game.
4. A thought on the season (Premiership/Championship/Champions’ League/FA Cup/League Cup/all leagues world wide Started off a bit worried - now very worried. The loss of SAF and David Gill at the same time has hit hard. Think we will finish top 4 eventually but it's not going to be pretty!

Glad we scraped a win today at Sunderland but it really was by the skin of our teeth. Thank heaven for Januzaj as RVP seems to have lost his mojo.

Pan Sun 06-Oct-13 08:57:37

Just 'wow' eh Horsemad? it's on youtube - her kicks toward the end got slightly sloppy as she tired, but just 'wow' - thank you. dd's egalitarian view is that X-F is about 'ordinary people doing their very best - SCD is for overpaid celebrities'. and she's really stubborn. don't know where that comes from....

80sbabe - I cheer you into the stadium! I'm fearing from a coaching pov. It looks like no-one wants to take responsibility for anything and the defence are looking at each other rather than sorting stuff out. Nani accompanied their player back into our box rather than actually tackling him, and overall they seem to have forgotten what give-and-go means. It's 'give-and-stand-still-and-wait-for-someone-else-to-offer'.

But Belgium appears to be quite nice! He was a star on the tour. Let's not let him be another Paul Pogba.

Horsemad Sun 06-Oct-13 19:17:54

Wow indeed Pan! smile Your DD has the right idea, well done to her for sticking to her guns.

Back to footy talk - I wish Arsenal had lost today!

Pan Sun 06-Oct-13 19:24:52

I had hopes! Talk of Arse lifting anything is a bit risible isn't it? I haven't seen any game with Oooozil, but it will only be time before teams have him marked out of the game, even on a rota basis. A coach of mine used to say to us "if he goes off for a poo, go with him and wipe his bottom for him. He's yours." grin

Horsemad Sun 06-Oct-13 19:33:29

Pan Sun 06-Oct-13 21:47:42

is Ozil the type to be easily roughed up? I recall attempts to 'rough up' Ronaldo at first, but at 6 foot 2 or 3 and built the way he is it didn't last really. I'd think Ozil isn't that sort of player though.

Horsemad Sun 06-Oct-13 22:03:25

Ozil is 'only' 5' 11" .

Pan Sun 06-Oct-13 22:07:56

Same height as me then. I was stood beside Rio F once, and felt he was towering over me!

Pan Sun 06-Oct-13 22:10:43

at 6 foot 4 and a bit, I wasn't wrong.grin

Hi, BlondieHouse is full of Hammers. BlondieDH, BlondieDF and BlondieFIL all Hammers.

I am converted, and DD is already onto her second Hammers kit aged 15mo :D

We don't mind seeing the big 4 (ManU, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham) lose, especially to us!

And we'd like to finish in that top 4 this year.

P.S We love Big Sam :D

Horsemad Sun 06-Oct-13 22:57:31

A couple of years ago, our local footy academy (who are not Premier by any means!) got rid of all their players who were under 6'.

I was surprised that Stevie G is 6', I think he looks shorter than that. Mind you, I saw him once in a very smart suit and he looked very long and lean. smile

BelfastBloke Tue 08-Oct-13 07:58:20

Would it surprise you to know that Thierry Henry is quite a bit taller than Sol Campbell?

Horsemad Tue 08-Oct-13 08:20:23

It would BelfastBloke shock

Pan Tue 08-Oct-13 11:03:57

Now IS the time to raise our heads up!

I saw Stevie G in a swanky M/c restaurant a few years ago with a leggy blonde woman, just them two. I said to friend at our table - look there's SG with wife. She looks over and says 'That's him. But that isn't his wife'.shock

BelfastBloke Tue 08-Oct-13 11:04:48

All right Horsemad, I may have overstated how much taller Henry is than Sol Campbell. But here is a photo showing that he is taller.

Pan Tue 08-Oct-13 11:09:34
Horsemad Tue 08-Oct-13 11:10:09

By about 0.5" BelfastBloke!

Horsemad Tue 08-Oct-13 11:11:36

Pan shock @ leggy blonde and shock shock @ your fave SG pic!

BelfastBloke Tue 08-Oct-13 19:19:43

Yeah, good pic, Pan.

The Premiership is so competitive and erratic this season that I suspect there might be significant spending in the January transfer window.

BelfastBloke Wed 09-Oct-13 15:13:42

Have PM'd you, Pan.

Let me know if you got it.

Pan Wed 09-Oct-13 18:53:56

I see Wilshire is bidding for the vacant EDL leaders vacant position....stick to the playing football,

80sbabe Sat 12-Oct-13 21:58:36

blondiedollface have to agree about the love for Big Sam at West Ham. My DH is a Hammer and against my better judgement I bought him a ticket for his birthday last year. Just the one ticket mind as the rest of us at home support Man U grin
Anyway, ever since I have been treated to a weekly update via email of West Ham News and most of it bless their cotton socks praises Big Sam to the heavens.
I can't bring myself to mail them back and say "this is all lovely, but actually ....." So I just forward DH the mails and then delete smile

Pan Sat 19-Oct-13 10:50:20

So after we were internationally interrupted, back to proper business. BIG midlands' giants clash - Coventry away to Wolves. And Belgium v Southampton.

Pan Sat 19-Oct-13 10:56:14

and breaking news that Januzaj has signed a 5 yr deal. Phew. Chocolates, beer and moustach'ed detectives anyone?

Horsemad Sat 19-Oct-13 20:30:16

Will Moyes be gone by Xmas? grin

Pan Sat 19-Oct-13 20:42:40

ha ha ha.

Euro qualification might be gone by Christmas least we're above Hull. <evidence of receding ambitions>
But Coventry got an away point at Wolves, swiftly changing the subject.grin

Horsemad Sat 19-Oct-13 20:44:16

BelfastBloke Sun 20-Oct-13 04:07:25

What you need, Pan, is to watch some football as it's meant to be played.

Pan Sun 20-Oct-13 12:37:06

You're right BB. But Coventry at N'hampton is just too far away. Unless you've a better idea.

BelfastBloke Tue 22-Oct-13 13:31:03

Resurgent Arsenal's biggest test of the season so far, tonight at home to Borussia Dortmund. And without one of our key reasons for our resurgence, Flamini guarding the back four.

A few weeks ago I would have had no hope of a good result against Dortmund. They are seriously good. Now I travel with optimism, but am very wary of them.

Good article in the Guardian today comparing Wenger with Jurgen Klopp, who lots of Gooners would be happy enough to have as a replacement.

Pan Tue 22-Oct-13 19:02:08

and it's on ITV. I (probably uselessly) predict the BD midfield stepping up on the Arse midfield, and not letting them play. Largely.

Pan Tue 22-Oct-13 20:07:32

20 mins in and it looks like a practice match. Which is enhanced by the strips - red bibs v yellow bibs. No actual shots on target.

Pan Wed 23-Oct-13 06:20:19

Tough outcome. CL is a step isn't it? No lapses and def no dribbling around on the edge of your own box, indicating a slight lack of respect for your opposition forwards.

Now then, where has this thread been hiding... belting!

1.*Which team you support*. Man Utd - More by luck than judgement, first match I ever watched on telly was Utd vs. Barca in the ECWC in 1990 - Sparky's goal sealed the deal for me
2.*Which team(s) you loathe*. Not Keen on City, Liverpool or Leeds - the only thing I loathe is the "new breed" City fans (arseholes)
3.*How you are getting your kids to follow the correct team*. The Ds is only 9mo so no indoctrination as yet
4. A thought on the season (Premiership/Championship/Champions’ League/FA Cup/League Cup/all leagues world wide: Would be happy with a top 6 finish this year. Moyes and Woodward need time to get used to the enormity of their task/boots to fill. Will be keeping an eye on Oldham and 1860 Munich - just mega-outed myself there!

BelfastBloke Fri 25-Oct-13 13:36:16

Not another one.

Is this just Pan changing names?

haha, no sorry mate. Your lot are doing alright arent they - Ozil is the difference isnt he?

Horsemad Fri 25-Oct-13 17:02:38

Can one player make such a difference?

Oblomov Fri 25-Oct-13 17:26:15

First post. Wierd season. Man U , never seen them like this, very odd.
My boss is a Gooner and has delighted in thrashing us and being top.
Some if our new players are very good. But we haven't gelled as a team.
Chelsea colleague keeps saying Sol-dud-o is another Torres.
Am being ribbed alot this season.

Pan Sat 26-Oct-13 13:03:24

Ciao Albert! <cheers him into the stadium>
Can one player make such a difference? I'd think it depends on the team/squad at the time and the player themselves. King Eric galvanised Utd partly through his charisma and partly because he played in a position we just didn't have, and never had really, so the team was arranged differently due to just one player, and the rest is glorious history! And Sheringham was the natural immediate replacement.

Ozil? I'll see for myself soon as BB has extremely kindly got me a ticket for the Southampton game at Ashburton Grove in about a months time. Which will be jolly, and a new experience sitting with Gooners for a game instead of hurling abuse at them, albeit from a safe

Pan Sat 26-Oct-13 13:26:50

oh and Coventry have another tricky away midlands derby, this time at Walsall after picking up a useful point at wolves last week. Walsall are in the play off places where Cov may have been if it were not for the 10pts deduction so it's a like-against-like game.

BelfastBloke Sat 26-Oct-13 14:24:50

15 mins left at Palace, and Arse are a goal up but with Arteta sent off.

Palace are peppering our goal, and Szcz has had to do some stretching saves.

BelfastBloke Sat 26-Oct-13 14:27:11

Oblomov, the best quote I heard this season was by a Spurs employee:

"We've sold Elvis, but bought the Beatles."

You're saying it's not really like that? I've only watched Spurs when we beat you, and we were relieved that your team hadn't yet gelled. Still not?

Pan Sat 26-Oct-13 14:43:20

So whilst Arse disappear round the next corner, we have a 6 pointer against Stoke....

Pan Sat 26-Oct-13 15:16:47

and we're 0-1 down...

Pan Sat 26-Oct-13 17:27:44

And another handy 3 away points for the mighty Sky Blues. Another win and they could be sniffing around the play off places. From minus 10 pts. Awesome.

Horsemad Sat 26-Oct-13 20:23:05

Looking forward to MOTD tonight. smile

DS doesn't know the Liverpool score as he's staying up to watch. grin

80sbabe Sat 26-Oct-13 23:28:02

Phew is all I can say about today - what a relief and now they need to build on it.
Chelski play City tomorrow - let's hope for a 0-0 draw as unfortunately there is no situation where both can lose.

Pan Sun 27-Oct-13 09:25:08

It was the most excruciating 70 mins of radio-listening. But, in the end we put 3 past a big, resilient defence, lots of positives to take away, and using all three subs is a reminder that just because we didn't buy in summer it doesn't mean there isn't any pressure for places and so strolling through a game isn't up to scratch.

DanFmDorking Mon 28-Oct-13 22:11:22

Met Office weather warning: "With high winds in the South, expect objects to come off the line, such as clothing or Joe Hart."

I’ve just bought Ferguson's autobiography.
I thought I'd got to the end but five more pages appeared.

Horsemad Mon 28-Oct-13 22:46:37

grin @ 'five more pages appeared'.

Pan Mon 28-Oct-13 23:12:53

Very funny.grin

Pan Thu 31-Oct-13 17:07:24

Reasons to be cheerful; Consecutive wins and a clean sheet: Competition for places: The Pride of Belgium: Wayne Rooney: a returning belief: a club track record of recovery: no-one else is exactly mashing the place up.

We are currently 8 pts off the Arse at the top. It's realist to hope/expect by pre-dinner aperitifs on Saturday we will be 6 points off whoever is setting the pace. That's

DanFmDorking Fri 01-Nov-13 19:29:02

It's good to see Joe Hart out and about in Manchester today after his recent blunder.
He was spotted at HMV giving games away.

Joe Hart wanted to dress up as a ghost for Man. City's Halloween party.
Unfortunately, he hasn't got enough clean sheets.

Joe Hart does not realise he's been dropped.
Pellegrini told him but it went straight over his head.

Pan Fri 01-Nov-13 20:56:23

Even more reasons to be cheerful

Pan Sat 02-Nov-13 10:08:04

And in a packed programme today..

Sky Blues are 'home' to 2nd bottom of the table Notts County. A win will push them further up the table to at best 8th. Lazarus is making a bid to be the club mascot. Though at the moment he is busy at Old Trafford...

BelfastBloke Sat 02-Nov-13 17:21:26

We are really going to miss Flamini today against Liverpool.

Wilshire also injured.

Pan Sat 02-Nov-13 17:54:15

I've ordered a scoring draw, combined with bookings and sendings off, to deplete teams for future games. Wouldn't wish injuries on anyone on the pitch..... Whoops, just thought of one.

BelfastBloke Sat 02-Nov-13 19:29:16

Yet what you received is Arsenal 8 POINTS ahead of ManUre.

Horsemad Sat 02-Nov-13 20:20:51

Didn't see the match but DS said they were outplayed by Arsenal.

Pan Sat 02-Nov-13 21:41:26

Days in the sun, my friend, days in the sun. Enjoy them whilst they briefly we're due to collect 3 pts off you quite shortly.

80sbabe Sat 02-Nov-13 21:41:31

Good first half from Man Utd - fell apart a little after half time by all accounts though, but nice to get another win under our belt.
Looks like we might be starting to gel at last and if we put together a good string of results the confidence and belief will follow.

Hopefully we can produce a result against Real Sociedad on Tuesday and we didn't get a bad draw against Stoke in the next round of the league cup.
Although it hits me in the pocket for extra fees (I pay for my DS's season ticket) I do want us to keep going in the cup competitions.

I am ignoring the results from The Council House and The Emirates today - shame that Pan's cosmic ordering scheme didn't come to fruition wink

Pan Sat 02-Nov-13 21:46:05

I wouldn't worry too much about the 2nd half, with so many subs and the game wrapped up and with a game on Tuesday. I'm just wondering how long it will be before Fellani produces a good game, or Moyes faces up to the fact he was okay at Everton, but he just isn't a Man United player.

80sbabe Sat 02-Nov-13 21:57:47

Pan - are you my DS in disguise ? He says the same about Fellani smile

I know we got through today ok but it would have been nice to add more to the goal difference second half as it may make a difference come May.
I'd have preferred a solid 1st half followed by a better 2nd half, followed by a stuffing for the Arse next weekend.

I was at the 8-2 battering two seasons ago with DS and it was just fabulous - DS was hoping to reach double figures grin

Pan Sat 02-Nov-13 22:08:24

He's a wise boy who knows his stuff.

I know what you mean about giving Fulham a stuffing, but we can't have it all. Yet.
On that 8-2 day I was shuttling dd around two hospitals when she was quite ill - each time I got back in the car we'd scored yet again. dd was comfortable by the final whistle......she's a Red, and that day proved

80sbabe Sat 02-Nov-13 22:17:43

No issue about DS knowing his stuff - he's a licensed FA coach and picks performances apart with a fine tooth comb. He's at Uni (near Manchester obviously so it's convenient for matches) studying Sports Science and wants to be a pro coach in the future.
Glad that wonderful day turned out to be a double whammy good one for you and your DD - it sticks in our memories too smile

Pan Sat 02-Nov-13 22:24:30

ooh impressive! Nice to know my assessment is backed by a keen professional!

80sbabe Sat 02-Nov-13 22:41:32

Well he's not a professional yet - he's completed his FA level 1 & 2 coaching badges (hence his licence) and now needs to start doing his youth badges before moving onto a specialism.
Ideally he'd like to be a goalkeeping expert because he considers it a key position often overlooked in coaching systems.

He's trying hard to find a youth team in the North West who'll let him volunteer with them so he can carry on with his professional development.

Even though he's offered his services free; he's DBS (was CRB) cleared and FA approved he's finding it hard as they all seem to prefer to stick with unqualified dads who they know confused

So far he's written to over 30 clubs and got 30 knockbacks so now he's trying local schools to see if they will be any more accommodating.

Obviously though, once he's England Manager I will expect the whole might of Mumsnet to be unequivocally behind him and not to utter a word of criticism grin

Pan Sat 02-Nov-13 23:15:32

A work colleagues DH is a coach of sorts at Man U. Not sure what and how exactly. Has been for a while. I'd happily make some connection for your DS, if he/you think it worthwhile? It may come to nothing but I imagine it's an arena where connections are important.

80sbabe Sat 02-Nov-13 23:42:23

Pan thank you very much - I've PM'd you with more details - you little star !

Pan Sun 03-Nov-13 00:08:34

And back to you! We'll see what happens, but I'm sure we can sort something.

BelfastBloke Sun 03-Nov-13 07:50:55

Well ain't this warm and fuzzy

Pan Sun 03-Nov-13 08:41:51

And very Red. Being top by 5 points isn't enough?

Yet another 3 points for the mighty Coventry yesterday.
Loved the shame-faced look of Begovic yesterday. Sweeeet.

Pan Sun 03-Nov-13 11:22:02

Will dip in and out of the Everton-Spurs game. Could be a good one..

Horsemad Sun 03-Nov-13 14:19:32

Oh well, at least DS's Sunday U15s won this morning! smile

Horsemad Mon 04-Nov-13 08:08:52

Any thoughts about how Spurs team doctor dealt with the goalie's injury?

I'm extremely surprised the player wasn't made to leave the field and a cervical collar fitted before allowing him to move.

I work with medics so will be keen to hear their take on this.

Pan Mon 04-Nov-13 18:00:34

It appears contrary to everything I thought I knew about head injuries and loss of consciousness. To go back into the fray appears the very last option in those circs. The leaders ie captain and coach didn't lead very well imo.

Pan Mon 04-Nov-13 19:50:28

80sbabe, check your inbox?

80sbabe Mon 04-Nov-13 20:59:55

Pan have read and replied - "Thank You" multiplied by a million doesn't seem to quite cover it - you are totally amazing smile

Pan Tue 05-Nov-13 08:46:55

I know.grin

Paleodad Tue 05-Nov-13 11:47:02

didn't realise there was a rolling football thread, alerted via another thread (thanks Pan), i'll join if i may:

1.Which team you support: Wolves, from boyhood to (almost) manhood
2.Which team(s) Should be WBA, but I've always had an intense dislike for Villa.
3.How you are getting your kids to follow the correct team.
Difficult, after buying full kit, making her watch goals on youtube etc. took my DD to her first ever match - wolves v the Toon - and we got absolutely slaughtered. Cue DD deciding that Newcastle is her team. Doesn't help that we live in Toon heartlands. DS OTO, with minimal input, has decided to follow his dad. And has stolen his sisters shirt. To say i'm pleased is understatement of the year.
4. A thought on the season (Premiership/Championship/Champions’ League/FA Cup/League Cup/all leagues world wide.): La Liga 1 is where it's at (of course). Wolves, all the way back to the championship (once we've dispensed with pesky Orient's flukey start to the season)

BelfastBloke Tue 05-Nov-13 12:54:43

Welcome Paleodad.

I've seen a few games at the Hawthornes. They don't speak very well of your lot, do they?

Pan Tue 05-Nov-13 20:30:45

Coming up to half time and getting really cheesed off with Fellani. His brain just doesn't work quickly enough, out of position he is found marking space, never plays the optimal ball, and spends most of his time having the game played past him. Picked up a stupid booking.

And he's got ridiculous hair.

Pan Tue 05-Nov-13 20:33:08

" I want to be the new Roy Keane." See what you are doing now, then do the opposite, mate.

Pan Tue 05-Nov-13 20:36:22

"out of position.." I meant 'out of possession', obv?hmm

Paleodad Tue 05-Nov-13 20:50:52

wolves 2 carlisle 1 , live on bbc radio cubria (internet stream) if anyones interested......

Pan Tue 05-Nov-13 20:57:28

No. We're all Coventry City followers round here.
<massively over-stating the case>grin

Paleodad Tue 05-Nov-13 20:58:41

no, not too well belfastbloke, nor we of 'sandwell town'.

Pan Tue 05-Nov-13 20:59:23

Would you like a big, useless weird-haired Belgian by any chance? He'd suit League 1.

Paleodad Tue 05-Nov-13 21:02:06

actually, strike that, i'm not interested anymore seeing as we've just conceded a penalty

Paleodad Tue 05-Nov-13 21:03:00

we could swap him for jamie o'hara......

Pan Tue 05-Nov-13 21:05:32

No thanks Paleo - it'd mean having his wife along as well. Is it still that model who was on Big Bro?

BelfastBloke Tue 05-Nov-13 21:07:34

Best game on tonight is Real Madrid at Juventus. 2-2 right now. Both Bale and Ronaldo have scored.

Pan Tue 05-Nov-13 21:10:27

so tempted to switch over, BB. Rooney off and Young on. At least vP is on.

Paleodad Tue 05-Nov-13 21:11:30

i believe so Pan

BelfastBloke Tue 05-Nov-13 21:13:31

Do you have Sky, Pan?

It's a cracking game. Defences are rubbish.

Pan Tue 05-Nov-13 21:14:13

We'll have her as a step up from

Pan Tue 05-Nov-13 21:19:46

Yep! Decided it was going to be too good a season to miss so much and rely on highlights and newspaper reports so got it last week. Good, innit.
I said to my mate that he could watch the cricket too. Not knowing it's in Aussie and so starts at midnight....

BelfastBloke Tue 05-Nov-13 21:21:20

Did you buy the Man U channel? How much was it?

Remember that the Liverpool channel is free - you can watch all of it.

Pan Tue 05-Nov-13 21:27:18

No to the Man U channel - too "hype-y" and I wouldn't have the time.
L'pool is free, but not worth the money.
The Sky channels were £22 extra.

BelfastBloke Tue 05-Nov-13 21:29:04

Yeah, I have Arsenal TV with my season ticket, but it's like Pravda.

BelfastBloke Tue 05-Nov-13 21:31:00

I think I might give up on this game and watch Monty Python reunion on Sky Arts. It's themed around 'The Meaning of Life', but they're talking about how they could write a new film.

Paleodad Tue 05-Nov-13 21:32:09

ah ha ha ha ha, just seen the red card Pan, at least you don't have to suffer the hair for the last 2 mins

Pan Tue 05-Nov-13 21:32:45

Fellani sent off. Mixed blessing....

Horsemad Tue 05-Nov-13 21:34:28

Might be better off without him!!

KenDoddsDadsDog Tue 05-Nov-13 21:35:04

Didn't know there was a thread this season. Brilliant.
Support Sunderland
Not too keen on Newcastle , Leeds or Rangers
My 3 year old DD watches match of the day on a Sunday morning and recognises Sunderland colours
Season awful so far , apart from the derby !

Pan Tue 05-Nov-13 21:35:31

He just can't keep up can he? The litmus test of the difference between 'good Prem team' and champions, screamingly obvious.

Horsemad Tue 05-Nov-13 21:36:32

Very true Pan.

Paleodad Tue 05-Nov-13 21:40:54

2-2, could have been worse on a cold tuesday night on Hadrian's Wall.

Paleodad Tue 05-Nov-13 21:43:23

forget champions league, it's all glamour down here in La Liga 1

Pan Tue 05-Nov-13 21:45:40

Lg 1 is looking good isn;t Paleo? Lots of goals and genuine competition, and even more after those flukey starts at the top dry up.....and the Sky Blues get in amongst the play-off places...

Pan Tue 05-Nov-13 21:46:25

La Liga 1 grin

Pan Tue 05-Nov-13 21:47:57

yes some oaf took it out of Dadsnet. There'll be a FIFA enquiry at the end of the season.

Paleodad Tue 05-Nov-13 21:59:41

all considered, Coventry are flying this season

Defense shocking again last night.

But otherwise impressed. grin

BelfastBloke Wed 06-Nov-13 15:19:17

Arsenal's trip to Dortmund tonight. Unlikely to be a happy hunting ground, even though we beat Bayern in Germany last year.

Pan Wed 06-Nov-13 15:34:54

Yes, am out with dd far a fair bit this evening, but it'll be nice to exercise my new viewing options later on re red bibs v yellow bibs.
Sorry to hark on Fellani, but had a chat on the phone with fellow Red this morning - we came to exactly the same assessment. IF he's on the team sheet for the Arse game we'll be watching competitive tiddly-winks on Sky channel 101 as an alternative.

BelfastBloke Wed 06-Nov-13 16:11:34

I'm working tonight, so recording the whole game to watch. I'll start watching as the match finishes. It's better doing that than watching Sky's highlights programme: - they announce the score before showing the match.

Mind you, the last time I did this, an Arsenal mate was around as I walked out of the meeting venue, and immediately referenced the score.

BelfastBloke Thu 07-Nov-13 06:50:38

Successfully watched the whole match without knowing the score.

Dortmund 0-1 Arsenal! So proud of the lads.

Who would have thought - put Stevie Bould as Arsenal assistant manager and the defence becomes brilliant….?

BelfastBloke Thu 07-Nov-13 06:58:38

Although Dortmund should have been given a definite pen in injury time.

Pan Thu 07-Nov-13 07:43:32

Good stuff.

I thought, to a degree, BD made it easy for you.For eg they had v little width and payed right into your feet. And didn't think they would/could be beaten......

Pan Fri 08-Nov-13 08:48:56

and there's even a tingle of excitement for Sunday - a bit of competition for a change...

80sbabe Fri 08-Nov-13 21:27:01

A tingle of excitement Pan ?
I think there may be a bucketful of nerves as well - on both sides grin
Interesting choice of referee in Michael Oliver though.

Pan Fri 08-Nov-13 22:14:00

is the ref significant?

80sbabe Fri 08-Nov-13 22:40:05

The refs are always significant aren't they ? grin

Pan Sat 09-Nov-13 08:53:22

Women and Footie! Have come across this from an MN-related source. It's an opportunity for anyone aged under 16yo to be a reporter at the UEFA Womens U-17's Euro champs being held in the Midlands. Stay at a hotel at St Georges Park and do some reporting on the games, equipment supplied.

There is a competition involved, close date this Fri 15th November. It's a chance for any footie-interested young person to exercise their reporting/writing skills and get to see round England's coaching 'hot house'

Here are the details

Pass it onto anyone you know who may have a young one who is a potential Eleanor Oldroyd, or that bloke with the fur-lined sheepskin.

Pan Sun 10-Nov-13 08:42:36
Pan Sun 10-Nov-13 15:37:30

Taking of seats in the auditorium. Bovril and pies all round, whilst Citeh get mauled by the Black Cats. So far so good.....

BelfastBloke Sun 10-Nov-13 15:51:40

Mertesacker not playing in our superb defence today. Vermaalen in instead.

But Flamini is back to guard our defence against Kagawa Rooney and RVP.

Walcott is supposedly available today, but let's stick with the players who clearly know what they are doing.

BelfastBloke Sun 10-Nov-13 15:54:42

Citeh players kicking Sunderland players in frustration during injury time, when they should be focussing on clawing a point back.

Horsemad Sun 10-Nov-13 17:19:05

Come on Man U - never thought I'd be wanting them to win!

Pan Sun 10-Nov-13 19:27:51

Well that was all v satisfying. No-one has mentioned the effect of 'nerves' in the game - Arse seemed more affected by them with more stray passes.
We also have Fletch on the edge of a comeback.
Next up Cardiff away with Arse home to Southampton - BB and I can swop notes there mono y mono!
Game def. back on.grin

KenDoddsDadsDog Sun 10-Nov-13 19:51:40

Get in there !! We always beat City one nil. Could write a match report for the Pie and Bovril lads but I'm too busy with housework. I know my place.

80sbabe Sun 10-Nov-13 22:28:07

What a fantastic run of results this weekend - that's shaken things up a bit hasn't it ? grin

80sbabe Mon 11-Nov-13 21:58:52

I was listening to Talk Sport on my way home tonight and they were discussing the impending name change of Hull City to Hull Tigers.
Apparently the new owner wants to make the change for a number of reasons - firstly for merchandising and commercial purposes and secondly because he "thinks City sounds common" grin

claretandamberforever Mon 11-Nov-13 22:16:21

oooh a footy thread

just marking my (penalty) spot

BelfastBloke Tue 12-Nov-13 12:03:05

What team is claret and amber? Bolton? Isn't that the Harry Potter scarf?

Pan Tue 12-Nov-13 12:31:37

I'm taking a wild guess at Bradford City - from whom the Mighty Sky Blues will be garnering 3pts from shortly. On Sky!

Pan Tue 12-Nov-13 12:35:54

is there a collective noun for 'froms'?hmm

BelfastBloke Tue 12-Nov-13 12:45:40

Sorry, I meant Bradford. Had a brain fart.

*"from who the Mighty Sky Blues will be garnering 3pts shortly."

Pan Tue 12-Nov-13 19:56:52

"Who replaces they and whom replaces them. Split it into two sentences to see which is correct: "They are a team. We will be collecting from them" - ergo "whom".
Because of the complicating factor of team, however, from which is also ok."

just quoting someone else....

claretandamberforever Tue 12-Nov-13 21:01:27

Yes, we're suffering a slump in form at the moment so you'll (Cov) 'll probably batter us grin

but hey! we're gunna be on the telly box.

Horsemad Wed 13-Nov-13 14:43:10

Aww, my DH has bought me hospitality tickets for Liverpool v Arsenal for my birthday!

I couldn't get any tickets under the membership scheme so this is great! grin

Pan Wed 13-Nov-13 16:31:01

Aw, now thats warm and fuzzy!

Just read someone describing O'Neil and Keane as "Bad cop and worse cop".

1.Which team you support. Wolves
2.Which team(s) you loathe. West Brom
3.How you are getting your kids to follow the correct team. My 7 year old likes Man Utd! Both me & my dad have taken him to Wolves games though so I still think he'll come round!
4. A thought on the season (Premiership/Championship/Champions’ League/FA Cup/League Cup/all leagues world wide.) I just want us to get out of League One right now, it's not fun. And West Brom to be relegated! I think Chelsea will win the league.

Paleodad Wed 13-Nov-13 21:56:50

another Wolves fan! C'mon me babbies! Welcome Vikki!
Taking DS (4) to his first ever wolves game on the 22nd against Brentford, very excited. it'll be my first game seeing wolves in La Liga too.
Wolves ay we!

Vikki88 Thu 14-Nov-13 23:05:48

Nice to know I'm not on my own Paleodad smile Well done on starting DS young, I tried the same with DS1 (he's still resisting so far) & my dad did the same with me! I might try introducing DS2 next season - hopefully better football then. wink

I've only been to 2 games this season & we didn't win either! Third time lucky I'm sure.

Pan Sat 16-Nov-13 15:26:32

With the tedium of international footie hitting the pause button, we can re-focus on where the real excitement is at - La Liga 1!

Wolves should pick up points against Notts Co,. with or without Robert Plant playing for them...and poss go top...

and the game of the weekend is Sunday, Bradford v Coventry 3pm. If EVERYTHING goes according to plan, Sky Blues could be in the play off places by the time Stars on Sunday is on.

Paleodad Sat 16-Nov-13 19:34:21

no bobby plant, but we are top of the league grin
this has cheered me up no end after being stuck on a very deppressing thread in aibu today!

Pan Sat 16-Nov-13 20:27:29

Congrats to Wolves. It's a marathon this footie league thing isn't it?

Horsemad Sat 16-Nov-13 20:56:09

Pan, did I tell you that Richard Keogh (formerly Coventry City) is a sort of relative of mine by marriage? I don't know him though, so no idea what he's like!!?

Pan Sat 16-Nov-13 21:01:35

No, you didn't, but I'll add that to my spreadsheet.grin

Did I tell you that an uncle of mine was the ticket officer manager at Man Utd? He was there for years, retired fairly recently and kept offering me tickets for games but I declined all of them. Because I didn't think it was fair.
WTAF? grin

Horsemad Sat 16-Nov-13 21:06:29

Pan, are you MAD???!

There is no point having 'Contacts' if you don't ask for their assistance occasionally.

I've got a tenuous link to contacts for tickets at LFC, via a relly, but haven't yet asked them for help! grin

Pan Sat 16-Nov-13 21:08:43

I know, I know. He offered me two tickets for the Euro semi against Barca when Scholes scored a screamer to put us through to the final. That was a slight

Vikki88 Sat 16-Nov-13 21:08:53

We are top of the league, say we are top of the league! high five *Paleodad * grin

Horsemad Sat 16-Nov-13 21:10:49

grin @ happy Wolves fans!

Pan Sat 16-Nov-13 21:16:17

On that Barca game, at 7.30am the following morning a colleague of mine who lives near him bumped into Scholesey in the local shop buying some milk. No frills for Scholes. Score a multi-pound winning goal, then it's up to get milk for the kids breakfasts.

Horsemad Sat 16-Nov-13 21:21:14

Yes, apparently Scholes is very down to earth and 'normal'. I like that.

Pan Sat 16-Nov-13 21:27:58

And yet, Xavi/Iniesta say that they were very pleased that he never went to Barca. Because, they said, someone would have had to make way for him.
He came down to Stalybridge Celtic, non-league near me a few weeks ago for a training session. It drew a bigger crowd than for a home game.

Horsemad Sat 16-Nov-13 21:54:44

I can imagine. smile

Paleodad Sat 16-Nov-13 23:48:34

So, my beloved Bradford are at home live on sky sports 1 at 3.30pm this aft. We've dropped out of the play-off zone and had a drop in form. We've not won in six games and we're really missing our best defender Andrew Davies (our other defenders frequently are seen looking completely bewildered to find themselves in the middle of a football game). But after last week's embarrassing shenanigans at Rotherham hopefully our team has had a kick up the arse and will put on a good display, whatever the result.

PS - Wolves are totally in another league (no pun intended). They're the best team I have seen at Valley Parade this season and the only team who have beaten us without the help of a referee!

claretandamberforever Sun 17-Nov-13 13:13:59

*1.Which team you support*.
Bradford City FC, aka The Bantams

*2.Which team(s) you loathe.*
Surprisingly not keen on Leeds United but they don't inspire the rage in me as much as Rotherham are this Year. 'orrible specimen of a manager they've got.

*3.How you are getting your kids to follow the correct team*.
Eldest son was an Arsenal fan until the age of 10 (now 17), when we got season tickets to go and watch Bradford City (mine was cheap, his was free) and we fell for them completely hook, line and sinker and we're both claret and amber through and through. DS2 (now 10) is a bit of a fairweather fan. He has a season ticket as it's still free for him, but I don't think I'd pay for one for him next year though.

*4. A thought on the season (Premiership/Championship/Champions’ League/FA Cup/League Cup/all leagues world wide*.
Errr you mean there are other teams out there other than Bradford City? #confused

Pan Sun 17-Nov-13 13:27:41

grin claret, I've ordered a close game with Sky Blues just edging it by the odd goal in 3.

Pan Sun 17-Nov-13 13:33:48

Am going to out with dd most of the day so kick off for us will be about 6pm. Good luck!

claretandamberforever Sun 17-Nov-13 13:35:51

I think Coventry will win 3-0. I'd even put 10p on it....

Pan Sun 17-Nov-13 13:37:31

I'll take your 10p off

claretandamberforever Sun 17-Nov-13 18:37:38

Oooooft I'll take that result! Beyond thrilled with a point from Coventry who are flying this season. Mind you, when they put 2 goals past us in 7 minutes (the first being 65 seconds) I did think my nightmare of humiliation on live TV was about to come true. And then to equalise with a last minute penalty - well. I hope the TV audience non-fans enjoyed the game as much as I did.

Pan - are you one of the hardy souls who goes to watch your home games at Northampton?

Pan Sun 17-Nov-13 20:46:53

Well that was footie! CC were v lucky to keep 11 players on the pitch for most of the game. Kevin Friend was awful.

No I'm not hardy at all. It's a matey of mine who is the Sky Blue, though I've sort of adopted them, as a pity club facing the 10pt deduction with no home ground for the season.

claretandamberforever Sun 17-Nov-13 21:03:04

There but for the grace of god go I. Bradford City were the ones to make administration fashionable! Not once, but twice. A canny chairman and a cup run have left us a bit healthier though.

Kevin Friend was the ref who did the league cup final where he sent our keeper off (otherwise we'd have no doubt mullered the Swans) * laughs head off *

BelfastBloke Tue 19-Nov-13 22:16:38

Tremendous night of World Cup Qualifiers. France got the three goals they needed against Ukraine.

Greasy Ronaldo is incredible.

Vikki88 Tue 19-Nov-13 22:40:11

Went to Molineux tonight - we were rubbish & I can't feel my feet anymore! Left before we scored our goal too which was the icing on the cake.

Quite predictable that England would lose to Germany!

Horsemad Tue 19-Nov-13 23:00:48

That always surprises me that people leave before the final whistle - whenever I go to a match I stay until the end.

Have you thawed out now Vikki?

Paleodad Tue 19-Nov-13 23:49:54

Sounded shit vikki, don't blame you (and the other 4 people in the ground!) for leaving early.
hope they're better on sat when me and DS are going up.

BelfastBloke Wed 20-Nov-13 07:34:13

Where does the name Molineux come from?

Horsemad Wed 20-Nov-13 09:49:26

A quick Google suggests it was the surname of the chap who originally owned the land that the stadium was built on.

Pan Wed 20-Nov-13 22:39:37

Off the back of England's dismal showings, here's an analysis to try.

When watching lower league footie (below Prem.) try counting the number of successfully completed passes either team make, in the opposing teams half. It will make pitiful viewing. eg I was at Bramhall Lane a couple of seasons ago and Sheff U. made only 3 such combos in the first half. Bradford on Sunday didn't make any in the first half.

AND...the result at the end of the 4+ combos is usually a positive one: shot on target, a corner, free kick etc. But on these islands we still prefer to lob it up field and hope. And in the majority of cases lose possession. We seem to consider it a good rate of attrition, rather than playing the percentage which is much more effective.
It seems to be where the investment in a centre forward's ability to 'hold the ball up' comes from. Whereas forrin' coaches would wonder 'why do you want to hold the ball up?'hmm Surely you wish to keep it moving?

Of course watching Scotland is just like watching Arsenal Brazil.

DanFmDorking Thu 21-Nov-13 09:01:54

German reporter: "Mr. Hodgson, have you made any changes for tonight's game?"
Roy Hodgson: "Nine."
German reporter: "Stupid Englander, should have made changes."

The FA have announced tonight that they are going to re-release the Del Amitri classic "Don't Come Home Too Soon" as the official England World Cup song for Brazil 2014.

Being an England football fan is a lot like being married.
They're not the best looking and you can probably do better, but you stick with them in the vain hope they improve.

Vikki88 Thu 21-Nov-13 16:40:31

Horsemad Paleodad I'm not usually one for leaving early but at 2-0 down, playing badly & freezing in arctic weather all 3 of us were in agreement it was the right thing to do!

Apparently our lowest FA cup crowd since the 1800's! I'm sure we'll be better when you're there Paleodad, we obviously weren't prioritising the cup. My only advice is wear at least 3 pairs of socks. grin

Horsemad Thu 21-Nov-13 20:28:48

Vikki, sorry - didn't mean to sound snippy, blush, it sounds hellish, so I don't blame you!
I think because I only get to a few games, and it costs me a fortune, I insist on staying until the lights go out! grin

That said, I do spend most Sunday afternoons freezing to death watching DS! smile]

80sbabe Sun 24-Nov-13 00:53:51

3 points definitely required tomorrow, hopefully Tottenham can keep Citeh to a draw if they don't grind out a win.
DH is now predicting that West Ham will at best be in a relegation battle come the end of the season - but as he cheerfully added they are used to their spot at the bottom of the table so what's new ?

So I met Pan on Saturday. He came to that London they have now, for Arsenal's win against Southampton.

Took him to a Gooner-run bar, where unfortunately we didn't watch the Merseyside derby, and then we watched the Arsenal game together in my seats.

Nice to meet you, Pan.

So that hoped-for Tottenham draw, that 80sBabe was wanting, didn't really work out, did it?

My hoped-for Man Utd draw, however, did.

Horsemad Mon 25-Nov-13 15:59:55

Sounds like you had a good time!

Pan Mon 25-Nov-13 19:45:00

Grumble grumble results over weekend.

BB it was fab. But really weird being in the 'North Bank' with a load of Gooooners. I'm surprised my feet didn't burn...
And thank you very very much for the experience - I haven't eaten since the Turkish meal, just too full still!

The best bit though was that Ozil was rubbish, to the point of being subbed.

Pan Mon 25-Nov-13 22:57:11

ooh and also Arse could only score via a goal keepers feck up and from a bit of shirt-pulling for a penalty.

Having said seems hacking down a player from behind with a swift kick to the calf only gets a yellow card.

Horsemad Mon 25-Nov-13 23:00:00

Yep, what a fluke that was!

Pan Mon 25-Nov-13 23:09:11

Yes it redefines what 'contact sport' actually means doesn't it? Even in rugby or American Football, or Aussie Rules, or hurling, or....basically any sport that doesn't permit a kick boxing technique... he would have been off.

BelfastBloke Tue 26-Nov-13 08:07:41

"Arse could only score via a goal keepers feck up". That's true, of course, but when you look at WHY the goalie fecked up, it's because Arsenal were pressing so diligently high up the pitch. Giroud was pressing the goalie, and Cazorla and Wilshire were tight on the goalie's only two options.

Of course he should have just booted it out, but it does exemplify a deliberate strategy Arsenal have only developed this season, of pressing much more aggressively when the other team has the ball.

Horsemad Tue 26-Nov-13 09:41:16

Why has it taken Arsenal so long to work that out BB?

BelfastBloke Tue 26-Nov-13 10:06:38

Firstly, although it sounds obvious, it's a strategy that very few clubs fully execute as a general policy. Most only employ it for specific games. The fitness levels have to be very high and there are inherent dangers in it. But this seems to be the policy this season.

Secondly, we've changed Arsene's assistant manager from Pat Rice to Steve Bould; and that has resulted in more focus on defence. It's why you hear a lot of criticism about zonal defending - people like Jamie Redknapp zero in on it when it goes wrong. But look at our defensive record overall the season.

Thirdly, Arsene's had a re-think. Obviously he's always been focussed on attack and 'pretty football'. But looks like he's finally realised that the two things which have been lacking are too many errors, and team cohesiveness. (Team cohesiveness is why Arshavin was shipped out, and why he barely plays Bendtner). Again, this is stuff which is obvious, but he's stubborn, and he was focussed on other things.

Arsene was extremely lucky to have Arsenal's historic back four when he arrived in 1996 - all he did was extend their careers with his new-fangled (at the time) training methods. He hit lucky again with the defence which took us all the way to the Champs Lg final in 2006 (they were makeshift, and accidental - Flamini at left back!?). But this is the first time he's really prioritised the defence.

Horsemad Tue 26-Nov-13 11:27:25

Seems to be working!

Pan Tue 26-Nov-13 14:30:45

that's a fine explanation BB, and yet S/hampton were being dubbed the pressing game kings.

and....whilst cycling past the Etihad Stadium yesterday morning, I met Laura Trott! I know it is only weakly referencing footie, but....I was biking to work and her and a matey were cycling to the Velodrome, which is across the road from Citeh, in front of me. We exchanged comments at traffic lights how cold the weather was and then we were off. She was kitted out in her GB Cycling team attire and at one point I could have overtaken her. But it would have been rude to do so, so hung back and admired the view..blush

mummylin Tue 26-Nov-13 14:42:28

Just popping in to say hello to Pan

Horsemad Tue 26-Nov-13 17:26:58

Wow Pan, how nice to chat to Laura Trott, you lucky thimg. smile

Pan Tue 26-Nov-13 19:34:01

Evenin' mummylin, hoping all is well with you and now-not-so-little one. Mines is currently sprouting up. It's what happens when you feed them isn't it ?

Yes Horsemad - it reminded me of doing half marathons where the world's finest E Africans are running in the same race as you are. Riding my bike to work and working near the Velo means I see lots of 'Skytrains' training and little groups of elite racers, but this was the first time I was actually stopped with one of them. I just wish I recognised the other one too. Weird start to the day.

Meanwhile, back at the Emirates..

Horsemad Tue 26-Nov-13 21:12:58

Just switched tv on - what has the game been like?

Pan Tue 26-Nov-13 22:40:31

It was background noise here, but it looked pretty much an excellent practice match. M just didn't really compete and looked like they were expecting a defeat. Still Arse had to beat what was in front of them and they did that well.

Pan Wed 27-Nov-13 18:56:33

United's plane having trouble at a German airport whilst pursuing a European Cup tie. No-one has said the word 'Munich' but they didn't have to. Blood ran slightly colder whilst it was read out on the news.

One good angle for the night. Felloony is banned.

Horsemad Wed 27-Nov-13 19:12:22

Scary sad hadn't seen that on my news feed, off to find out what happened.

Pan Wed 27-Nov-13 19:28:12

Munich was about taking off. This was about aborting a landing attempt 400m above the runway. Don't know why. Still...

Horsemad Wed 27-Nov-13 19:51:58

That shouldn't really happen. Ever.

Very unsettling for the poor passengers.

BitOutOfPractice Wed 27-Nov-13 19:53:23

Hello! Wolves top of the league back fan here.

Am I allowed to join in - League One didn't seem to be mentioned in the OP

BitOutOfPractice Wed 27-Nov-13 19:57:26

1.Which team you support - Wolverhampton Wanderers. SEcond team is Spurs as I was married to a Spurs fan and have been at WHL too man freezing February Tuesdays to quite give them up
2.Which team(s) you loathe - West Bromwich Albion, closely followed by the Arse. A fixture between these two is known in this house as Battle of the Shits
3.How you are getting your kids to follow the correct team - My DDs are not really into footie unfortunatley but they have been taught, from babies, to cheer the Wolves and Spurs and boo the Tescos and the Red Scum wink
4. A thought on the season (Premiership/Championship/Champions’ League/FA Cup/League Cup/all leagues world wide.). TBH I've lost interest in the Premiership a bit. Though it does seem more open this year. I've been concentrating on League One

80sbabe Wed 27-Nov-13 22:05:40

Well the near miss really unsettled the Man Utd players didn't it ?
Bless their cotton socks they only scraped a 0-5 away win grin
Is that our biggest away win in the Champions League ?

Pan Wed 27-Nov-13 22:16:52

Crumbs, another Wolves fan! Welcome Bit - La Liga 1 is def where it's at, apparently. Cov were stuffed 0-3 last night by Rotherham. Bubble evaporating rapidly.

yes biggest away win. The 7-1 devouring of AS Roma was the biggest home win in the modern era as they say, I think. YOY is Schmeichel paid to be an observer and summariser?

BelfastBloke Sun 01-Dec-13 13:32:13

Enjoying Spurs v Man Utd on my iPhone, on an intermittent wi-fi connection in a soft play centre.

I could've been watching on big-screen HD, but the wife wanted to spread presents and wrapping paper all over our lounge.

Good game.

Liverpool. A subtle clue is in my user name. (In my defence a variant of this had been my internet name for years and it gradually mutated to this as it was what people were starting to call me anyway)

2.Which team(s) you loathe.

I don't loathe any. I don't mind seeing Man U struggle, but I am aware Liverpool and Liverpool fans are not in any position to call any other bitey racist strikers teams loathsome.

3.How you are getting your kids to follow the correct team.

Brainwashing, relentless emotional propaganda, same as everyone else.

4. A thought on the season (Premiership/Championship/Champions’ League/FA Cup/League Cup/all leagues world wide.)

Interesting one. Can't help but feel the Premiership table is currently lying, particularly about us. I suspect Chelsea, Arsenal and City will be top three, City to win (Out of those 3 I'd prefer Arsenal, though), leaving us, Everton, Southampton and Spurs fighting for 4th.

Off to read the history of the thread.

Horsemad Wed 04-Dec-13 08:41:22

Welcome LuisGarcia, good to have another Liverpool fan here. smile

Are you a Scouser?

DoctorTwo Wed 04-Dec-13 09:50:47

Surprisingly not keen on Leeds United but they don't inspire the rage in me as much as Rotherham are this Year. 'orrible specimen of a manager they've got.

I used to be a member of a tinpot non-league forum that used Steve Evans instead of a particular profanity. He is the sole reason for my otherwise irrational hatred of Boston Utd, Trawley Clown and Rotherham Utd. Vile excuse for a human being.

Pan Wed 04-Dec-13 10:18:20

Do we have to google Steve Evans then? Wondering what inspires such contempt.

Pan Wed 04-Dec-13 10:28:08

Message withdrawn at poster's request.

Horsemad Wed 04-Dec-13 11:11:13

That bloody Steve Evans, completely shafted Boston Utd. Tosser. angry

DoctorTwo Wed 04-Dec-13 11:55:33

That utter Steve Evans Steve Evans avoided jail by the skin of his teeth for tax evasion and paying players bonuses illegally in cash whilst manager of Boston. This was the year they bought achieved promotion from the Vauxhall Conference before the crooks were caught and Boston went broke.

At Crawley he denied they were being bankrolled by a wealthy benefactor and basically lied that the best players in non league were playing for peanuts and the love of Crawley Town. He shouts constant abuse at match officials. It's a wonder how he hasn't been clouted by a ref yet. He's universally reviled by fans of non-league who were around in the early 90s and again in the mid to late noughties.

A member of the old Conference Forum (RIP) by the name of Duncan Biscuit wrote a memorable and hilarious series of stories titled 'Meanwhile At Broadfield'. If memory serves me well he was threatened with libel.

Pan Wed 04-Dec-13 12:06:22

Thanks Doctor - with that in mind I'd earlier reported my last post after making it.

Pan Wed 04-Dec-13 19:22:12

And in a packed programme tonight.....we'll be doing it the old fashioned way and avoiding all scores and watch the festival of football on MOTD.

Horsemad Wed 04-Dec-13 20:27:13

DoctorTwo Wed 04-Dec-13 21:12:36

Watching the Swansea - Newcastle match on TV whilst streaming and watching the West Brom -City match on the laptop and watching the other scores on the PC....

LuisGarcia Wed 04-Dec-13 23:37:24

Are we allowed to talk yet?

LuisGarcia Thu 05-Dec-13 00:27:19

At least Moyes has finally seen Everton beat Man U at Old Trafford!

Horsemad Thu 05-Dec-13 06:30:21

grin @ Moyes seeing Everton beating Man U!!!

Suarez is magic, isn't he? Great goals.

BelfastBloke Thu 05-Dec-13 09:29:56

Am I changing my mind about Suarez? I was adamant that I didn't want Arsenal to buy him, but i can't deny his brilliance.

Hang on, though, Bendtner scored for us last night. "We've got the best player, in his head…."

LuisGarcia Thu 05-Dec-13 09:36:57

"Here's the bathroom, over there's the kitchen, and this is the Norwich City match-ball room"

Horsemad Thu 05-Dec-13 17:44:15

grin grin grin

Pan Thu 05-Dec-13 17:58:52

I really hope Moyes has a cunning plan. This includes giving everyone else a false sense of security...

Horsemad Thu 05-Dec-13 18:23:14

Moyes will probably be sacked before the end of the season if things don't improve soon!

BelfastBloke Fri 06-Dec-13 07:41:41

How about Moyes being given time to create his own squad? Which by definition would take longer than one or two transfer windows?

Champions League qualification would be a successful season for a club going through such a seismic change.

Horsemad Fri 06-Dec-13 21:27:50

As sensible as your suggestion is BB, it probably won't happen - it's a shame as I think Moyes is a very good manager.

Pan Sat 07-Dec-13 12:10:07

It is a very sane obs. BB. As we know though the Prem is an unforgiving place, and more so at a club where we are swimming in previously plundered loot!
But, one loss in 13 games and without vP and Carrick isn't panic stations is it? Having to play Lord Giggs of Everything twice in a week is a bit of an indictment. The trouble atm though is that Arse and City are on fire with not much sign of them being doused, and Liverpool have a crackerjack of a forward line ( to continue the combustion analogy). They don't have much reason to look to the January window.
Be curious to see how European duties affect us all. City are looking horribly good, and with Kompany back and no loss of Toure to African competition this year they must feel v positive.

Pan Sat 07-Dec-13 12:33:52

Any World Cup thoughts? Starts with 90 mins of "I'm a professional footballer..get me out of here!". Is it too much to hope for draws against Italy and Uruguay and a victory against Costa Rica. That would qualify them surely?
And...if for the first two games England are to line up in the Roman Armadillo formation, Rio F would do well there. Not too much running around but v good at defensive organisation.

DanFmDorking Sat 07-Dec-13 13:52:31

The World Cup, well, at least England won't be going out on penalties.

I'll been watching the second round at the same place England will be.
At home.

BelfastBloke Sat 07-Dec-13 17:27:48

I'm fascinated to see that England's tropical game kicks off at 2am in the morning. That'll reduce heat. Does that reduce humidity?

Pan Sat 07-Dec-13 17:32:57

BB, the way I read it, it means moving kick off from evening to earlier in the day (so for tv we can all watch them sweating their bollocks off) - the heat will be greater but no idea the effect on humidity.

DanFmDorking Sat 07-Dec-13 20:44:01

The first England game has been changed to 11pm Fri 14th June.

BelfastBloke Wed 11-Dec-13 07:35:19

Crazy game last night. Man Citeh were 2-0 down and came back to 2-3 with 20 min to go.

All they needed was 2-4 to top the group. But they mistakenly thought they needed 2-5.

So they took off a striker and didn't replace him with players who could have scored the vital final goal.

Horsemad Wed 11-Dec-13 08:54:14

Pan Sat 14-Dec-13 11:19:18

Don;t Citeh have form for that sort of thing? I recall something similar a few seasons ago.
Significant weekend coming up? In La Liga 1 Cov are 'home' to Crewe and would hope for 3 pts., and Wolves entertain the Dons.

Pan Sat 14-Dec-13 14:43:16

well that was never going to be a nil-niler was it?

BelfastBloke Sat 14-Dec-13 17:15:07

Excellent game. Citeh were better and deserved to win. But it would have been interesting to see where we were if Bendtner's legitimate goal were to stand, and the penalty to Arsenal be given, and some of those wrong offside decisions …

I'd be interested to know if a neutral would agree that the refereeing decisions only went one club's way. Because I am not trying to say that we deserved to win.

Horsemad Sat 14-Dec-13 18:58:23

What a score for City!

80sbabe Sun 15-Dec-13 01:00:03

BB I think you are being very benevolent in your comments, obviously as a Utd fan it goes against the grain for me to ever say that Citeh deserve to win a game - heaven forbid grin
To me they will always remain a team that are all fur coat and no knickers grin

LuisCarol Sun 15-Dec-13 01:35:03

I'd be interested to know if a neutral would agree that the refereeing decisions only went one club's way. Because I am not trying to say that we deserved to win.

Bendtner was offside, Giroud wasn't. It wasn't a penalty. I'm only watching MOTD and we all know how bad they are at showing reality, but I didn't see any bias tbh. City are incredible at home this year. Being splattered by them is not necessarily due to the ref.

Pan Thu 19-Dec-13 20:07:02

BB have PM'd you.

Pan Thu 19-Dec-13 20:29:29

On the Citeh-at-home thing, these things usually have a short shelf life. It only takes one challenge and the bubble gets bursted. Teams turn up expecting to be rolled over, then one day it doesn't happen. can't come too soon in my hope . smile

Pan Sat 21-Dec-13 14:43:50

Damn. SAF spends 26 yrs knocking Liverpool off their perch and ensuring they stay off. He turns his back for 6 months and they creep back on it. Pesky

Horsemad Sat 21-Dec-13 17:47:45

Woohoo, Come On You Reds! grin

Merry Christmas to ALL footy fans, far and wide.

BelfastBloke Sun 22-Dec-13 06:56:09

God bless us every one. Do good deeds.

I'm taking my Spurs mate to Arsenal v Chelsea tomorrow.

DanFmDorking Sun 22-Dec-13 11:05:34

BB - I've got an 'orible feeling about tomorrows game.
Not looking forward to it at all.

Pan Sun 22-Dec-13 11:38:31

The current fixtures are quiet nice for us. We had some tougher games at thte start of the season when we weren't <ahem> very good. But now we have a few surely winnables and playing much better, even sans RvP.
Meanwhile teams above us are being fixtured together and so taking points off each other.

Yesterday Cov let slip a 0-1 lead in the 2nd half to a 2-1 defeat. Play offs look like a bit of a struggle now.

Pan Sun 22-Dec-13 11:55:13

Oh I don't know Dan. Chelski's midfield looks like it caves a bit under pressure, and Flamini and Wilshere look more than capable of doing that. They didn't like the Black Cats sticking it in their faces, so I'd be a bit more hopeful.
fwiw grin

Pan Mon 23-Dec-13 19:07:46

'cept of course Wilshere has managed to invite himself out of proceedings...

DanFmDorking Mon 23-Dec-13 21:51:12

At least we didn’t lose.

BelfastBloke Thu 26-Dec-13 08:26:53

On a blustery sodden night, I found it fascinating that Wenger didn't use any subs. I've never known him to do that.

He had Flamini, Carzorla, and Bendnter warming up down below us for the whole of the second half, but never threw one of them on.

He always subs around 70 mins in. I can't remember that last time he used no subs.

BelfastBloke Sat 28-Dec-13 05:58:41

Arseblog: "The conundrum of Olivier Giroud was fully illustrated in East London. He snatched at a presentable chance in the first half, yet it’s hard to believe players such as Podolski, Ramsey and Walcott would find the opportunities they do without his presence.

In a sense, we can’t live with him and can’t live without him."

Pan Sat 28-Dec-13 12:33:47

And season's greetings to all!

No convinced by Utd's 'charge up the table' yet. Yes we have winnables and clubs above us are busy taking points off each other - but we aren't exactly stamping authority in games. Quite how Rooney wasn't even booked for kicking the Hull player from behind is a bit of a mystery. And please please please can we have Vidic off the bench and organising the defence better than anyone else can.

Horsemad Sat 28-Dec-13 12:42:58

I'm still feeling raw after the Boxing Day match sad

Pan Sat 28-Dec-13 12:47:44

and with good reason Horsemad. Rogers was a bit wrong to implicate a Manchester conspiracy but some of the decisions were cockamainy.

Horsemad Sat 28-Dec-13 13:08:08

Horsemad Sat 28-Dec-13 13:08:31

Horsemad Sat 28-Dec-13 13:12:47

Aarrgghh! Stupid phone!

Agreed Pan - it was made worse by watching it at a City fan's house! sad

DS mentioned Rogers' Manchester conspiracy theory; pretty pointless Rogers making that point, I thought, although the ref WAS totally rubbish! grin

Pan Wed 01-Jan-14 13:45:32

Our beloved Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to Cardiff.shock I'm sure he knows what he is doing....

80sbabe Thu 02-Jan-14 00:33:28

Pan I'd like to think that Ole knows what he's doing, but I'm actually not so sure.
Mr Tan does not appear to be an owner who actually understands the Premiership at all, in fact I'm not sure he understands any football league come to think of it.
Malky McKay was not a bad manager - he did nothing wrong and he retained the loyalty of the fans to the end - which goes a huge way.
As much as I adore Ole I'm not certain he'll do any better with the raw material available to him and I do hope he won't taint his future prospects with this move.

Moving onto other matters - I couldn't believe we didn't at least draw with Spurs today or better still beat them at home shock
We absolutely have to get things under control and fast now or else we won't be in the CL next season and that's just unbelievable.
Moyes needs to get a grip on the midfield failings and fast if possible this transfer window.

BelfastBloke Fri 03-Jan-14 18:54:50

Solskjaer understands football, that's for sure. Whether that is relevant in his new job is debatable.

Looking forward to the North London derby in the FA Cup tomorrow, although it'll be a nasty atmosphere, likely dreadful weather, and I'm sort of expecting to lose. Very focussed on the Premiership at the moment, although the FA Cup would be easier to win than the Prem, of course. Given our trophy drought, FA Cup would be good.

80sbabe Fri 03-Jan-14 21:37:39

I think Mr Tan is actually investing in the wrong area for his talents - comedy seems much more appropriate.
Surely he had to be having a laugh when he suggested Liverpool should play in their away strip at Anfield now that he's changed Cardiff's colour to red ?
I'm just sorry that he didn't get the opportunity to suggest that to SAF before he retired - I'm sure the ensuing conversation would have been very enlightening (if brief) for him grin

DanFmDorking Sun 05-Jan-14 21:11:53

Now Man U. are out of the FA Cup they can concentrate on other things -
Like not getting relegated.

Fair enough, Old Trafford is a hard place to win a game of football -
Just ask David Moyes.

DanFmDorking Wed 08-Jan-14 13:47:41

I was supposed to do a speech at Old Trafford but was thrown out before I finished testing the mic.

All I said was 1-2 1-2 1-2

Naughty Dan grin

Pan Wed 08-Jan-14 16:35:30

snot funny.

Pan, DH has lived through the bad times with City, he has learned to roll with the punches and be philosophical about results, though he still gets frustrated.

DBIL on the other hand, is not dealing with Uniteds' form this season very well at all. He had spent over 20 years picking on DH and poking fun at City, but has now taken to avoiding the topic of football around DH. DH finds his behaviour amusing, as he would never bother saying anything to him about it - he always says it could be his turn again soon. He fully expects the rough with the smooth....a legacy of the dark years. smile

He has said though that the biggest mistake United could make is getting rid of Moyes - he reckons lack of continuity was one of City's biggest problems - they went years not being able to steady the ship and build anything.

Pan Wed 08-Jan-14 18:30:25

I know. I'm really kidding. It's just soooo haaard to take.grin

We'd spent years politely patronising Citeh fans, it's soooo haaaaard.

No Moyesy must stay and be given a good while, I agree. I remember the dark days of Busby-McGuiness-Busby(again)-O'Farrell-Docherty and 2nd Division. I like to take a long view as

Job done. Train tickets to Wembley being researched. grin

Pan Wed 08-Jan-14 21:53:51

It's a date.hmm

Horsemad Tue 21-Jan-14 21:17:25

Very quiet in here...

DanFmDorking Wed 22-Jan-14 21:28:28

At the National Television Awards 2014 the award for best drama performance in the male category goes to
... Luis Suarez!

Wayne Rooney has been told he will not be allowed to leave to one of United's main rivals,
... that rules out Norwich and Southampton then.

Horsemad Wed 22-Jan-14 21:56:03

DanFm - how very dare you!

DanFmDorking Wed 22-Jan-14 22:53:27

I don't know why Manchester United fans look so upset after the Sunderland game,
... you won a game at Old Trafford

What happens when a black cat crosses your path?
... You get knocked out of the Capital Cup.

David Moyes "Phil I said try and score not score a try".

David Moyes has promised fans of Man U. that they'll be in a major European competition next year
... even if he has to write the song himself.

BREAKING NEWS: Juan Mata arrested after being caught reversing his way back down the M6.

Horsemad Thu 23-Jan-14 00:21:49

grin Poor old Man U!

Pan Mon 27-Jan-14 19:58:01

It hurts even more now!grin And I am now sharing my office with...a..Citeh fan, and he is patronising the feck out of me. Every day.

Intersting Cup draw wasn't it? All Prem teams matched, except Fulham...wouldn't mind Chelski booting out Citeh in order to reduce their likely trophy tally. And rather hopeful for Mata-Rooney-vPersie trinity. Obv fear is that we just turn top class players into quite average ones.

Horsemad Tue 28-Jan-14 22:42:04

My next door neighbour who is an honorary Grandad to my DC is a Citeh fan, so I'm used to hearing him wax lyrical about them. smile

He's tried and failed to sway DS2 to change his allegiance, but that will never happen!

Great result for the Reds tonight. smile

Pan Tue 28-Jan-14 22:50:25

you mean 2-0 for the Reds?wink

What's scary is that S&S were falling out about scoring the fifth goal. That's champions attitude. Schmeichel and the back four would badly verbally abuse each other if they conceded a corner.

Horsemad Tue 28-Jan-14 23:01:38

Would love to have been there tonight!
