Well, that quali was a load of crap - wasn't it?

No cars running at all for the last five minutes - bloody joke.

In all my many years of watching F1, I have never been so bored watching Qualifying. I feel sorry for the spectators who bought tickets to see that. Looks like will be business as usual for Bahrain Quali though!

I don't understand why it was changed in the first place.

LemonRedwood · 20/03/2016 17:43

Glad they've scrapped it. Don't know if going back to previous format will be the best decision though - it did need a shake up.

Alonso must have had someone smiling down on him to walk away from that crash in the race.

That crash was really frightening.

Great race - hope the rest of the season lives up to that one.

The crash was a scary one , at first I didn't even notice Alonsos car in the tyres , just the Haas car. Glad both walked away and Alonso seemed in good spirits afterwards.

We don't have sky sports . . .(If we did I'd end up throwing something at the tv as Martin Brundle really really annoys me ) so looking forward to seeing what channel 4 do with a live race.

Yes, quali was shockingly bad. I don't disagree that it would be nice to shake up the pack on a Saturday, but crap-quali didn't even do that. Other suggestions they were considering included reversing the previous race's final line up, which seems even more awful; especially at races like Monaco where overtaking is almost impossible. I'm kind of glad they tried something, it's just a shame it wasn't an idea that worked.

I don't have Sky Sports, so usually try to avoid spoilers before non-live races. Was not thinking clearly when I was feeding the baby at 6 this morning and automatically clicked onto Facebook. Cue spoilers about the first and second places, plus a headline detailing Alonso and Gutierrez' crash. I'm sort of glad I knew about it in advance - it was sickening to watch. Alonso's car did not look like a car afterwards. It's amazing he walked away from that. Scary stuff.

Hello all, may I join you? I've not had chance to watch an F1 race in YEARS, so some of the changes came as quite a shock! Pitstops in less than 3 seconds! I was amazed. I also spent far too much time wondering why Verstappen looked so young before realising it was Max, not Jos

The fact that Alonso walked away from that crash shows how much safety has improved. I'm old enough to remember Ayrton Senna crashing, back then Alonso would have had no chance.

I've been away for a few days so missed the whole race weekend, just read about it all today.

I had my doubts about the new qualifying format when it was first discussed. I can't see how no cars recording times for the last few minutes adds anything.

Looks like it was quite an involving race though. I'll certainly be looking forward to Bahrain. I know it was just highlights on C4 but what was general opinion on the quality of coverage (c.f. BBC)?

Report
CaptainKit · 22/03/2016 22:46

I didn't think the coverage was too dramatically different from the Beeb - enough of the same faces that it felt a bit familiar, but the new people weren't awful. Steve Jones was fine as a new presenter - am a little bit sad to have lost a female face fronting the sport, but it'll be a long time before there are more women in the sport, and Lee McKenzie's still around. Am looking forward to seeing what Suzie Wolff does in her bits.

General format was pretty similar; some preamble, some featurettes, the race (ads were a bit annoying, but we won't get them in live ones) and the wrap up. Same sort of thing as the Beeb.

Is C4 offering the same coverage as the BBC did? We've got Sky, so recorded it and watched it when we got up. I don't like Ben Edwards as a commentator, how did Mark Webber do?

Crispbutty · 23/03/2016 00:24

Mark Webber was great. But I am biased as he's my favourite driver and I've missed him! Anyone is better than Eddie Jordan though!

What a mess F1 is in.

That quali was so boring. Hope the race is better.

I agree, the sooner they go back to the old quali (or something like it) the better I'd say. Seeing an empty track at the end of each session is awful. In his interview on C4 I don't think Bernie came across at all well. I'm not sure there's currently much of a will in either the FIA or FOM/FOA to change anything.

My first chance to watch the C4 coverage, enjoyed hearing what Mark Webber had to say. I'm out during the day tomorrow so may not catch the race. Does anyone know if it will be on 4OD? I'm guessing so, but too used to the Beeb's coverage!

Callmecordelia · 02/04/2016 21:00

Yes, it is on 4OD.

Agree Bernie came across terribly in that interview - was he being deliberately controversial or is he that removed from real life??

Really enjoying having Webber on my screen again!

Hello!

Haven't caught up with much yet, though we did watch the highlights from last week's race. Alonso's crash was incredible.

Hopefully we get decent race tomorrow.

OberonTheHopeful · 02/04/2016 21:11

I think he's actually a bit too removed from the fans/drivers/teams (hence the exclusive pay tv deals he's been pursuing). Or at least that's was came across in the interview. Personally, I think it's time for a proper re-think on how the sport is run.

Hi there MN F1 2016! I've been looking for you!
Just an idea for anyone who hasn't got Sky. If you have FilmonTV on your iPad etc, you can watch live races on foreign channels, e.g. the French channel RTS Un, with Dab radio 5live for commentary in English.
Agree ^^ with qualifying being rubbish in this format. Bernie seems intransigent though.

Report
OberonTheHopeful · 02/04/2016 21:28

Thanks for the tip about Filmon TV, I had no idea! :)

No sign in today's interview that either Bernie or Jean Todt are in any mood to come to an agreement with the drivers or teams. How can they be so unaware of what the fans are saying?

Report
FadedRed · 02/04/2016 21:38

Bernie doesn't give a damn what the supporters want, just where he can get more money from.
Also, if you have FreeSat, then races are live on German RTL channel.

magimedi · 02/04/2016 22:47

8Faded* - What is the number of that channel?

French channel on FilmonTV is RTS Uns.

Well that was an eventful race, though it settled down towards the end. I do like watching the sparks flying from underneath the car.

Will come back later for more spoiler-filled comments!

Flowers faded.

It was Ok - but I am bored with ten mins, in the last laps showing the struggle for 12th place. I'd like action at the front!

''Twas a bit like the dodgems for a few laps.
Good overtaking though.
Still trying to get my head around the new teams and the rookies. Takes a few races to work out who is going to be worth watching for the future.
Well done Lewis for getting that damaged car to the end in third. He needs to get the starts sorted though.
