Improving swimming technique?

I am an adequate swimmer, have been a qualified lifeguard etc but have very poor technique. I would really like to improve so that I can swim more comfortably but have no idea how to unlearn my current strokes? has anyone done this and how?

Lots of people rave about Swim Smooth coaching for freestyle. I had 1:1 sessions with a coach in an endless pool (so coach is v close to you) and that was brilliant for me

Did you find it awkward? I worry that I've got to unlearn before I learn and it could take me a while!

Bit different for me as swimming was something I was relearning as I'd acquired a disability which means I only use one arm.
People seem to do a one day course and click with the technique, but I know I need to concentrate on the finer details of my stroke as I swim to keep them tidy. Gives me something to think about though!

I found one to one swimming coaching to be brilliant and not in the slightest bit awkward - go for it Grin

Lots of links & advice on this thread:

Look for the links to Total Immersion - some great videos & style tips there.

I started regular swimming again in January & have used a lot of the tips from the link above & have gone from struggling to do 12 lengths front crawl to be able to do 40 3x per week.
