KatieBMumsnet (MNHQ) Mon 16-Apr-12 12:45:31

Waitrose.com are offering 12 Mumsnetters (plus one guest each) a chance to attend a Michelin-star cookery masterclass at Waitrose Cookery School in London. They're looking for cooking enthusiasts who are interested in learning Michelin-star cookery skills from a professional chef and are keen to share their passion for food with like-minded Mumsnetters.

The event will take place on Saturday 12th May from 11am - 4pm at Waitrose Cookery School in North London. The venue is easy to get to using public transport (close to Finchley Road tube station on the Jubilee and Metropolitan lines).

Throughout the day Mumsnetters and their guests will be cooking a three course dinner party menu with all ingredients provided by Waitrose.com. Each course will be served in the dining room and you will have a chance to enjoy the menu you have prepared with a glass of wine specially selected to go with each course. The aim of the day is to inspire you to create your own Michelin-star-inspired dinner party menu!

The day will be filmed and the video will appear on Waitrose.com and possibly elsewhere. Please only apply if you're happy to be filmed. After the event you will be asked to leave written feedback on a thread on Mumsnet. Everyone who is selected to attend and adds their feedback on MN will be entered into a prize draw to win a £100 voucher for Waitrose.com.

If you would like to attend please sign up here. When signing up, please vote for the starter, main course and dessert you would most like to cook (and eat!) on the day. The three most popular dishes chosen by Mumsnetters who apply to go along will form the menu that attendees will be cooking on the day. Here's a few of the choices on offer to whet your appetite!

~ Roast scallops, potato gnocchi and truffle emulsion
~ Rack of lamb with braised peas, bacon, lettuce and mint. Dauphinoise potatoes
~ Inverted lemon tart, summer fruit salad and lemon yoghurt sorbet

Please let us know about all dietary requirements when you sign up to take part. As you'll see from the menu choices, all of the starters and main course options include meat or fish. If you're a vegetarian, apologies - this probably isn't the event for you, sorry.

Attendance is by invitation only - we'll be in touch with full details if you are selected.

Thanks and good luck

MNHQ

<bounces excitedly>

hattifattner Mon 16-Apr-12 14:51:31

DottyDot Mon 16-Apr-12 16:00:32

<crosses fingers>

TheProvincialLady Mon 16-Apr-12 16:01:37

I am sobbing because this isn't suitable for vegetarians, wah. Any chance of doing a vegetarian one of these please, waitrose? Please?

ripsishere Mon 16-Apr-12 16:13:12

I'd love to, but it's DDs birthday. She wouldn't be impressed I don't think.

DameHermione Mon 16-Apr-12 16:14:56

OOOOh I'd love to do that. Except I'm fat and ugly and unfilmable. And I don't like fish or lamb. And I'm crap at cooking.

would I be suitable?

ShirtyKnot Mon 16-Apr-12 16:15:50

I would love to do this, but I can't be on a video - I'm far to hideous sweary in RL. sad

ripsishere Mon 16-Apr-12 16:35:54

D'ya fancy being me for the day then Shirty. I'll apply for the cooking thing - although like the Dame, I don't eat those things, and you have 28 screaming children at a party?

Done :-)

StickingLaboutin Mon 16-Apr-12 16:41:25

Oooops! In my excitement at this offer I applied and was promptly reminded by DH that we are going to be away at that time.

Can my name be removed?

envy at whomever is chosen.

FaceCrack Mon 16-Apr-12 16:46:06

Done. <crosses fingers and toes>

ShirtyKnot Mon 16-Apr-12 16:50:57

I like giving parties rip. grin

DameHermione Mon 16-Apr-12 16:52:02

fuckit. i've applied. despite being fat and ugly and probably working nights that week. OOOOh I'll be just the sort waitrose will want on their film, looking my absolute finest.

FrankWippery Mon 16-Apr-12 17:08:41

ShirtyKnot - are you buggery. Well, you're sweary, but you're not hideous. And you make damn fine sweetie vodkas.

KatieBMumsnet (MNHQ) Mon 16-Apr-12 17:10:48

StickingLaboutin I have removed you from the list, thanks for letting me know smile

Chopstheduck Mon 16-Apr-12 17:16:50

Oooh, me me me!

I love cooking, and the Waitrose cookery school is lurvely! I went to a venison cooking lesson there which was amazing, but that was watching rather than actually cooking.

PuggyMum Mon 16-Apr-12 17:25:36

Done! Would be fantastic to take part in this smile

Tee2072 Mon 16-Apr-12 17:25:42

Ah man, all the good stuff happens in London....don't suppose MNHQ wants to pay to fly me from Belfast? No? Didn't think so.

envy

ohhhhhhhh I would love to do this but I'm away, boo hoo. I wonder if it's Heston.

peanutbear Mon 16-Apr-12 18:05:44

This would be my dream

TheCunningStunt Mon 16-Apr-12 18:12:37

I knew I should have stayed living in London.....stuck in Scotland.....

ShirtyKnot Mon 16-Apr-12 18:28:33

Shall I apply Frank? We can go together!

Milliways Mon 16-Apr-12 19:03:11

DS (16) has begged me to enter with him as guest. Maybe his phrase in the kitchen will change from "Jamie says......" smile

FrankWippery Mon 16-Apr-12 19:05:01

Shirty - yes. Then we could accidentally stumble across a cocktail bar on our way back down to the correct side of the river. It would be extremely rude not to I feel grin

oh PLEASE. Me. Me me me.

smile

0bviously0blivious Mon 16-Apr-12 19:14:15

Done!

THIS is why I joined MN. Sounds amazing!

Pick me, pick me, pick me....!

Back2Two Mon 16-Apr-12 19:27:44

Here I am! I'm your gal. Have been a mumsnetter since 2006 and have really loved cooking since being a SAHM (around 2009)

I STARTED eating meat after being veggie for 24 years after having my two boys. Pregnancy made me crave meat. I love food.
My love of food has turned into a love of cooking. I'm a stay at home mum and I find cooking gives me a creative purpose.

Make me happy!

MrsWembley Mon 16-Apr-12 19:29:46

Done diddy done done.

<wonders how to tell MrW if MrsW gets a place>

5inthebed Mon 16-Apr-12 19:30:39

London, London, always London envy

Blu Mon 16-Apr-12 19:41:20

Would there be a role for a one-woman Kitchen Nightmare, do you think? I could be the ine who shows just how good the others are, and provides the comedy diversion for the patronising voice-over.
"And in the Blue Kitchen, Blu seems to have made a disastrous confusion between an amuse bouche and the Mighty Boosh.."

I would have loved to have applied for this BUT am GUTTED that vegetarians are excluded. I would love to be able to cook stunning vegetarian food. It's out there somewhere!

Back2Two Mon 16-Apr-12 19:46:20

Oh. <thick emoticon>
Thought I had to plead to you.
Have filled in form now.

Please pick me though.

iklboo Mon 16-Apr-12 19:51:37

Bum nuggets. London. Wouldn't be able to get there for this due to other financial commitments. Sigh.

beatenbyayellowteacup Mon 16-Apr-12 19:55:10

Fingers crossed. Love to be able to cook posh nosh!

Is there a chance of another one - even if we have to pay for it - later on for the people who missed out?

mummybookworm Mon 16-Apr-12 21:06:46

Pick meeeee!

delilahbelle Mon 16-Apr-12 21:14:20

I've signed up - pretty sure I am not eligible as I don't have kids (yet!) but I do love cooking...

Fingers crossed!

NormaStanleyFletcher Mon 16-Apr-12 21:15:42

. Marking pkave

delilahbelle Mon 16-Apr-12 21:16:21

Although that does mean I have no problem with childcare etc. Ooo, it would be AMAZING to be chosen.

Chopstheduck Tue 17-Apr-12 07:15:30

Beatenbyayellowteacup - waitrose do paid classes too in the cookery school. Well worth the money IMO, the venue is fantastic, staff are lovely and fab equipment. link

ladybirdbliss Tue 17-Apr-12 10:07:48

Done smile

DowagersHump Tue 17-Apr-12 10:46:12

Fingers crossed. I have been dying to see what the inside of the cookery school looks like since Waitrose took over Habitat's old site grin

ShirtyKnot Tue 17-Apr-12 11:14:46

Have applied. Screw it.

FrankWippery Tue 17-Apr-12 11:23:40

Splendid Shirls. Me too, one of us must get it please please please grin

I would love to do this. My mouth is watering at the menu choices!

ShirtyKnot Tue 17-Apr-12 11:44:30

I want both of us to get it Frank - and we can do TEACUP COCKERTAILS (maybe)

grumpykat Tue 17-Apr-12 11:51:08

Done! <fingers crossed, hope hope hope.......>

Fillybuster Tue 17-Apr-12 12:20:12

Any chance of a vegetarian session that isn't on a Saturday? Pretty please Waitrose and MN?

FrankWippery Tue 17-Apr-12 13:02:08

Maybe Shirty? Maybe? I think the teacup cockertails is compulsory whether we get it or not tbh.

MayaAngelCool Tue 17-Apr-12 13:02:31

Oooh! Sounds grand! Will sign up.

ShirtyKnot Tue 17-Apr-12 13:44:56

<cliquey>

Sarayu Tue 17-Apr-12 14:35:00

Done and drooling

Done. My birthday's this weekend so it be a great present!

LackaDAILYcarb Tue 17-Apr-12 17:36:58

I may be too far away, but I've applied anyway....

herecomesthsun Tue 17-Apr-12 19:13:49

I would love to go with my DH - but we would be turning up with DS, who is about to turn 4, and DD, who would be 3 months old. So I haven't completed the form, sadly...

xkcdfangirl Tue 17-Apr-12 19:18:12

Bit rubbish that you are completely excluding vegetarians. What centuary are we in again?

beatenbyayellowteacup Tue 17-Apr-12 20:25:03

ooh fab chops - thanks!

FourThousandHoles Tue 17-Apr-12 20:28:28

oh my word... would LOVE this

When do we find out? I was so excited to be applying to take part that I never noticed the closing date or anything!

TheOtherHelenMumsnet (MNHQ) Wed 18-Apr-12 16:55:01

SweetestThing - we'll be in touch with the MNers who've been selected to go along on Friday (20 Apr)

ShirtyKnot Wed 18-Apr-12 16:56:34

Which is my birthday by the way TheOtherHelen. <big eyes>

Thank you, TheOtherHelen grin

PorkyandBess Wed 18-Apr-12 19:22:20

Fingers firmly crossed!

I have applied, this would be fabulous.

ceeveebee Wed 18-Apr-12 20:30:35

I have applied, would love it! Before the twins (5mo) I was an adventurous and capable cook and often entertained. Now I only have time for slow cooking and freezer food! Would be great to have the time to cook again properly

Look, can everyone who has applied stop posting? All you're doing is bumping the thread and diminishing my our chances of winning.
wink

Consort Thu 19-Apr-12 20:02:21

Done, now fingers, toes and everything else crossed.

I didn't think we had to beg on the thread.sad I just filled in the application. Right at the very beginning, I would like to point out!

But given the fact that you are letting us know tomorrow who gets to go, the only thing I can say now is... PLEEEEAASE!!!

Sarayu Fri 20-Apr-12 12:01:30

Do we know yet??!

TheOtherHelenMumsnet (MNHQ) Fri 20-Apr-12 17:36:20

Hi everyone - just to let you know that there's been a bit of a delay in choosing the attendees. We'll be in touch with those who've been chosen on Monday. Sorry for keeping you all hanging on over the weekend!

BIWIWhoMustBeObeyed Fri 20-Apr-12 17:39:11

You just want us to grovel and beg more, don't you?!

Sarayu Fri 20-Apr-12 18:01:05

Agh. In that case, this is me grovelling and begging.

BlingBubbles Fri 20-Apr-12 18:02:31

Oh no, been checking online like a mad woman today! Oh well something too look forward to on Monday

FaceCrack Fri 20-Apr-12 18:06:10

MrsWembley Fri 20-Apr-12 18:39:00

Oh poosad Still, at least I know now why I haven't had an email.

FrankWippery Fri 20-Apr-12 18:44:20

<proffers freshly baked brownies served warm with some whipped cream>

0bviously0blivious Fri 20-Apr-12 19:01:47

If you can cook like that Frank then you clearly don't need this course grin

<<adds a tenner to the kitty>>

FrankWippery Fri 20-Apr-12 19:05:30

Ah, but I need to hone my Michelin skills....Anyone can make warm, gooey chocolate brownies....

FourThousandHoles Fri 20-Apr-12 19:38:09

<proffers gin>

<has no shame>

heard nothing, so dont think i am picked. sad

gutted.

ooh feel better now I have read that we wont know until Monday. grin

Monday? MNHQ, what a tease you are.

In case you are still dithering, I've already checked the trains, put the babysitter on standby, and chosen my outfit for the day. Just the small matter of that confirmation email outstanding now.....

<leaves bag on table containing bundles of clean 20s, a large bottle of sloe gin, and some divinely moreish cheese and chilli mini muffins>

Woodlands Mon 23-Apr-12 11:42:00

So? Have the lucky winners been told yet?

I'm checking my email constantly which is quite hard to do with crossed fingers smile

I got an email!!!!

But it wasn't from MNHQ or indeed anything to do with this sad

OO you tease

MrsWembley Mon 23-Apr-12 14:41:28

Anybody heard anything yet? I'm out and can't check my email.

Maybe they are trying to figure out how to include us all?
(no email here yet)

Sarayu Mon 23-Apr-12 14:55:17

Still waiting. No news is good news??

DowagersHump Mon 23-Apr-12 14:56:16

I think they must be horribly disappointed by us and are trying to figure out what to do sad

Monday is nearly over <wails>

Maybe they gave the prize to people less desperate than us?

Chopstheduck Mon 23-Apr-12 16:18:27

I reckon they are doing it for the attention, and we should be ignoring them grin

Henwelly Mon 23-Apr-12 16:38:08

Its just mean sad

O M G. I got in!

Sarayu Mon 23-Apr-12 16:53:37

DameHermione Mon 23-Apr-12 17:00:32

Damn and blast.

SOB. Loudly. I'm actually gutted.

FrankWippery Mon 23-Apr-12 17:04:03

Shirty we shall just have to resort to the second part of our plan and go and drink cocktails instead. Drown our sorrows and all that.

Me too!"!!!
Mega excited.

<jumps around like a loon>

OMG Im in! I cant wait. Called my friend to tell her, she is sooooo excited too.

mmmmmmmmmmm delicious. I heart Waitrose.

DameHermione Mon 23-Apr-12 17:27:38

FaceCrack Mon 23-Apr-12 18:30:16

Yay! Amazing. It's made my week. smile

Well done all who got in. Now. I've just had an amaaazing and novelle idea...why not take a fellow mner grin

Imagine. You could become all popular and stuff on heregrin

I had planned to take an MNer, if DP or one special RL friend didn't want to go. But, very out of character, DP does. Sorry sad

FaceCrack Mon 23-Apr-12 19:12:18

Yeh I'd thought about taking a MNer. DH is showing unusual interest due to free wine smile

What to wear?

Bottoms.

Wigeon Mon 23-Apr-12 19:20:34

I got a place! grin grin grin!!

Hello everyone else coming! I dare you all to wear matching Boden grin!

Wigeon Mon 23-Apr-12 19:21:45

I have never knowingly met another Mnetter that I wasn't related to (ie my SIL). Oh, apart from a colleague at work. How exciting!

I'm very excited that I can get the bus straight there and enjoy the wine <hic>

UnChartered Mon 23-Apr-12 19:37:48

congratulations - you'll have a brilliant day smile

envy
but it would have been better if i was there, not bitter, oh no, not me

wink

FaceCrack Mon 23-Apr-12 19:39:38

Ooh DH and I are so excited. We can get the tube there. My dad staying here for the weekend so we can get pished.

I forgot they were filming. Better book a chin wax!

Actually I saw a t-shirt that said "not a daily mail reader" which I thought I might get. Dare someone to bring a bag of pombears. grin

Mmmm we could sprinkle crushed Pombears over the truffle emulsion!

<worries waitrose will see this and reallocate my place>

MrsWembley Mon 23-Apr-12 20:17:00

LackaDAILYcarb Mon 23-Apr-12 20:23:02

dairymoo Mon 23-Apr-12 22:05:33

I got an email too - yay!! Can't wait grin

Woodlands Mon 23-Apr-12 22:27:43

Glad it's not just me bringing my DH - was a bit worried he'd be the only man! I have already roped my parents in to look after DS for the day.

no idea what to wear! It will need to be comfy, am guessing we#ll be on our feet a lot, plus we will have to travel across London and back before and after.

noseynoonoo Mon 23-Apr-12 22:39:22

Can I just clarify how good at cooking everyone who is going actually is. Am a bit worried I am going to embarrass myself confused

nosey I am no michelin star chef, that is for sure - although I could hold my own with Gordon Ramsay in the swearing department.grin
I can cook, just not very good at fancy schmancy stuff, which I think we will learn to do.

I did google what inverted lemon tart was - and came up with a vair naice dessert!

Woodlands Tue 24-Apr-12 08:22:26

Well, just after reading the email I was so busy thinking about the day that I managed to leave my thumb under DS's cheese on toast that I was cutting with a very sharp knife. Luckily I only cut the nail rather than my thumb... but I think it indicates my knife skills at least are not very good!

I can cook normal standard family food but nothing fancy.

I'm a competent cook, but never really do fancy stuff. My 'presentation' skills are something of a joke in our house.

Didn't realise we got free wine, this just gets better and better.

Oooh, and this seems to be the lemon tart

twitpic.com/5smxdq

I love cooking and think I'm ok at it, and I love following instructions/recipes grin

That looks vair posh Lulu!

DP is a bit worried that he might have to cook.

I think everyone has to cook obv isnt that part of the deal? grin

BIWIWhoMustBeObeyed Tue 24-Apr-12 09:40:27

I'm absolutely gutted that I didn't get on to this. sad

I am very envy of you all.

<goes to check junk and spam once more in the vain hope that the e-mail is there>

It is part of the deal indeed Jax! I'll make sure he eats what he cooks. That might focus his mind grin

Holy crap that pudding looks amazing!!! Ho fab I am going to learn to cook something to that standard!!!!!!!!

DP is working on his Greg & Jon impressions. Flava!

From the Waitrose site re: what to wear:

"Please wear comfortable clothes and comfortable shoes (no flip-flops or open toed shoes). A chef jacket and apron will be provided on the day. We will provide you with the recipes for each dish from the course, however, please bring a pad and a pen if you would like to take more detailed notes."

FaceCrack Tue 24-Apr-12 11:36:33

Oh yum, that pudding looks fab. Bang goes the diet.

I was just going to wear jeans. Is everyone else going smart <slattern>

I'm going to wear my wedding dress. I think this occasion is special enough.

FaceCrack Tue 24-Apr-12 12:11:03

grin

I shall have jeans on too. We are going to be in hot, sweaty kitchens so wont be wearing my wedding dress.

Good point Jax

<forlornly stuffs dress back into cupboard>

jeans, sneakers, naice bra

(that's a joke, as a BF Mum of 1 year old I've forgotten what a naice bra is)

Jax the kitchens don't look too hot & sweaty - have you seen the piccys on the Waitrose site? DP & I will think we have woken up in MasterChef

FaceCrack Tue 24-Apr-12 13:06:03

No it looks very swanky. I'm hoping not to get too sweaty!

FaceCrack Tue 24-Apr-12 13:07:14

No top hiphop? grin

FourThousandHoles Tue 24-Apr-12 13:44:16

Oh god, the "what to wear" quandary. Depends if my naicest jeans fit properly by then grin

Poor BIWI sad but think of the carbs. Def more than 20g and ingredients >3 carbs in that menu

Might get me hair dun too

They'll probably want long hair tied back FourThousand - will that affect your hair choice? <Is a food safety professional> grin

I thought everyone was nekkid under those white chef tops? grin

FourThousandHoles Tue 24-Apr-12 14:38:08

grin Obviously... I work in the technical dept of a food manufacturing factory... I know all about attractive hairnets grin

I just need a trim really otherwise I may frighten people

Wigeon Tue 24-Apr-12 14:38:47

I am bringing my sister. She is very very excited too grin. I did think about bringing DH but only after the following conversation (more or less):

Me: Who shall I bring?!
DH: Er..
Me: I thought maybe my sister! Or how about [friend]. Or [other friend]. Or do we know someone else who might really like it as a treat? Has anyone got a birthday coming up? Or I could bring a random Mumsnetter - that might be fun!
DH: Er, I could come?
Me: Think I'll bring my sister.

grin.

Oh I'll be getting a trim too fourthousand, before my image is preserved forever on the Waitrose website shock

Wigeon you are mean grin

Wigeon Tue 24-Apr-12 14:42:14

noseynoono - I am a competent family cook - cook from scratch all the time, cook a pretty wide variety of meals, but nothing Michelin-y (ie no fancy schmancy foams / emulsions etc). And pretty much zero presentational skills.

Thanks for the link Lulubellarama - looks fantastic! That's nothing like I'd cook. People are impressed if I serve up a homely-looking homemade cheesecake with possibly a dribble of summer fruit compote on top.

laughing at you all getting haircuts!! grin

<<books appointment>>

FaceCrack Tue 24-Apr-12 15:48:07

wigeon I invited DH then tried to uninvite him, which was an epic fail!

Balls, I need a haircut? This wasn't part of the deal!

ooh no didnt see the kitchens, off now to look at the Waitrose kitchens.

dh can't come, he was my first choice but he has something else booked already on that day, but funnily enough I've managed to find a friend who was more than willing to step into the breach grin

I have been doing Outfit Planning, why exactly when we will be wearing whites/aprons? <tragic>

Haircut booked. Outfit decided. There is bound to be a group photo / filming while we are eating / filming while we are donning the chef-outfit stuff, and so I am definitely going to attempt to look presentable! well at least make sure there isn't baby sick on my shoulder

jeans, trainers and top. job done. hair in a ponytail. sorted.

oldbag I bet you are silf like, I think we should all go and enjoy ourself. I am changing my name by deed poll straight after filming. I hate myself on camera.

Sense at last - think I will be in the same uniform as Jax!

Shall we only call ourselves by out MN NN's all day grin

catzu Thu 26-Apr-12 14:17:24

Gosh that would be fantastic!

FourThousandHoles Thu 26-Apr-12 14:27:10

Oh yes will be jeans, shoes, top

But I have just ordered the trainers from this thread and the top will be one I've been eyeing up for a while (tis nowt special, just a pretty vest top) but couldn't justify buying until now.

Do we need badges so we know who's who? grin

My mate isn't an MNer, she'll think we're barmy.

My mate isnt a MNer either - she already thinks I'm barmy! grin

what top fourthousand?

Less than seven days to go!!

I am excited!

Has anyone heard any more details?

noseynoonoo Sun 06-May-12 20:19:37

I was just coming on here to ask the same. Were we due to get more info or do we just turn up on Saturday?

<re-reads email from KatieMumsnet>

It says they'll be in touch with more details.

FaceCrack Fri 11-May-12 17:11:32

Squuuueeeeee! I'm so excited about tomorrow!

Me too!

Had a fantastic day today! Loved every single minute of it.

Thanks, Waitrose and MN.

Was lovely to meet some other MNers too. wink

So did we! I'm so grateful to MN and waitrose. I'm dreading that video footage though grin

FaceCrack Sat 12-May-12 21:41:46

I had a wonderful day. It was lovely to meet you all.

Thanks Waitrose and MN.

oh yes obv that is my worst nightmare. I have no idea when it goes 'live' - hopefully I will be edited out.

FaceCrack Sat 12-May-12 22:23:45

Did anyone find out what the video was going to be used for?

The bit up the top of this thread says it'll go on the Waitrose website and possibly else where hmm

Woodlands Sat 12-May-12 22:53:50

I had a brilliant day too - shame I can't match MN names up to faces I met today! Am looking forward to adding my feedback but assume it will be on a different thread.

My many thanks to Waitrose and Mumsnet, I had a lovely day, everyone on the staff was lovely, and it was nice to meet fellow mumsnetters,

noseynoonoo Sun 13-May-12 15:07:17

Thanks for a great day. My friend and I seemed to be the only people wholly ignored by the camera. A blessing to be honest but am worried I should have a complex about my appearance now.

Feel quite inspired by it though and thought the trainers were excellent.

AnnMumsnet (MNHQ) Sun 13-May-12 17:29:08

Feedback thread is here - thanks

Thanks to whoever let me put my bag in their locker thanks and DP and I enjoyed sharing our bench and dining table with the MNer from NZ (I hope...) and her DH smile
