HelenMumsnet (MNHQ) Tue 03-Feb-09 16:04:07

Hello. A while ago, all you lovely Mumsnetters gave us some brilliant tips for surviving winter colds and sniffles. Well, now we want to know which of those tips you think is the very best of all.

And, thanks to the very nice folk at Kleenex Anti-Viral Tissues, everyone who votes for their top tip will be in with the chance to win £500 of Center Parcs vouchers.

All you need to do is check out the tips and then click on the link at the bottom to come back to this thread and post the name of the Mumsnetter whose tip you liked best. (Some Mumsnetters have got more than one tip on the list, so if you're voting for one of them, please specify tip 1 or tip 2).

All votes must be posted on this thread by the closing date: midnight on Tuesday 24th February. Good luck! smile

Go totally over the top with sympathy: cold compresses; special soft tissues; making sure they're warm enough at every opportunity; appearing to be genuinely worried and wondering aloud if you ought to call the doctors; stroking brow; asking in soothing tones 'How are you feeling now?' just slightly too often. Wear gloves in public and on public transport. Don't use money - use your cards. And if you smell nitrous oxide on anyone's breath, hold you own breath and turn away to breathe - their nose is making this gas to kill bugs they already have and they are infectious. Soop Thu 26-Feb-09 20:29:52

3littlefrogs tip1 - after my kids were born and I found myself washing my hands endlessly (nappy changes, wiping up sick/snot etc, cleaning bottles, laundry) I stopped getting colds. Probably nature's way of making sure someone is available to clear up after the little ones.

harribelou Thu 26-Feb-09 20:52:24

babydriver Thu 26-Feb-09 22:00:31

starlightmackenzie - great tip - will certainly be trying that one!

Dawnybabe Thu 26-Feb-09 22:06:14

Don't know if it is the most useful or not but it certainly made me laugh the most:

"Menthol crystals: put in bowl of hot water, stick a towel over your head and prepare for take off. It will blow your head off." TonyAlmeida

Love it! grin

ameliaanne Fri 27-Feb-09 07:35:13

My vote goes to Flossish - bring the duvet downstairs and snuggle up on the sofa with large glass of red wine and chocolate (better than any medicine!)Oh yes - and somehow get rid of the kids for the day!!

Nagapie - the saline water really works, and not just for babies!!

jessddibs Fri 27-Feb-09 11:08:31

My vote goes for paperchase. I always ask myself why should I play nurse to his man flu when nobody will even make me a cuppa when I am dying!? So I very often feel like shooting him when he can spend a whole day in bed with a cold and I can't!!!!

Twims Fri 27-Feb-09 12:52:46

Plantsitter's

Go totally over the top with sympathy: cold compresses; special soft tissues; making sure they're warm enough at every opportunity; appearing to be genuinely worried and wondering aloud if you ought to call the doctors; stroking brow; asking in soothing tones 'How are you feeling now?' just slightly too often. Freaks. Them. Out. Never seen such a quick recovery.

Where to start?! 3littlefrogs (both tips), Rosa and Rhubarb all tie IMHO as all very sound evidence-based tips. (But I loved virtually all of them and some eg plantsitter made me howl with laughter...which is another bonus, as currently suffering with a cold for 3 weeks and having a laugh makes me feel better!)

Well I'm going to vote for myself as I know it works! My immune system is compromised and I don't often get coughs and colds because I use Melrose almost every day. If I run out or forget it, I end up catching a cold.

Vote solo. <well, that's two votes! thanks ceeb>

Spend 20 years or so attending every toddler group you can, helping in every class you can, and, for bonus points, have a spell working in childcare. You'll end up with an immune system second to none and be impervious to most bugs.
