The Brassica Growers Association are backing the Love Your Greens campaign and would love to hear your DCs favourite dishes which use a brassica vegetable, which includes: broccoli, kale, swede, Brussels sprouts, turnips, cauliflower, spring greens and cabbages [don’t worry, some of us here at MNHQ didn't know what they were either!]

Here’s what they say, “Greens are great and we want everyone to enjoy them as much as us! As well as tasting great, they’re really versatile and full of goodness. We can’t wait to see the delicious dishes you come up with – it’s time to inspire the nation to love their greens”

So, what’s your DCs favourite dish which includes one (or more!) of the brassica vegetables? Can you share the recipe with us? A vegetable curry perhaps? Maybe a delicious Spanish omelette? Or possibly just a classic bubble and squeak recipe which they particularly like? How about a fab coleslaw using your food processor? The Brassica Growers Association are hoping to launch a recipe book next year and are looking for some inspiration from Mumsnetters and their DCs so feel free to add whatever recipes you may have!

Everyone who posts on the thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 Love2Shop voucher!

Standard Insight T&Cs apply.

Thanks and good luck

Ds loves broccoli and cauliflower cheese, and a current fave of mine is coleslaw made with cabbage (obv) and bits of broccoli along with the carrot and spring onion, with some kale chips scrunched over. Much nicer than it sounds! Sometimes I add celery, sultanas and some apple bits for a coleslaw/waldorf kind of combo

We love roasted cauliflower - cut into florets, and blanch and let dry, then roast with cumin and coriander.

My two are very fussy and would never eat kale or cauliflower if it were boiled or steamed :(
But if I roast either in a little olive oil, and sprinkle a little sea salt over at the end, they will eat it all - even mine before I get a chance to eat it! Grin

The trick is to make them a bit different and interesting.

  • whizz up boiled broccoli and cauliflower and blend in a couple of cheese triangles for a tasty soup.
  • cut swede into wedges and roast with olive oil and garlic instead of potato or chips.
  • toss Kale leaves lightly in oil, bake into crisps and top with whatever they fancy, like crumbled goats cheese.
  • shred spring greens, cut tiny broccoli florets, or "little trees" as we call them, and add them to a stir fry with marinated tofu or quorn.
  • boil and cut Brussels sprouts, then add them into macaroni cheese bake topped with Parmesan.

Hmm, not sure about turnip and not really used it much other than mashed. Use it to act out the story of the Enormous Turnip?!

Cauliflower rice is great, the kids don't have a clue though! Just blitz the cauliflower into rice sized pieces and then cook in boiling water as you would rice.

Broccoli and watercress soup is a favourite too, I just put broccoli, watercress, onion and potato in to a pan of boiling water with a stock cube, cook and then blend with a dash of coconut milk

Cauli-macaroni cheese is our stand-by, but to be honest, the boys prefer broccoli and cabbage just boiled or steamed to mucked about with. They won't eat it roasted. Neither they nor I am much of a fan of sprouts, but I much prefer them roasted or stir fried to boiled.

Cabbage soup and sausages is probably DDs favourite. Chopped carrot, onion and celery, sweated in oil with garlic. A whole chopped cabbage, small chopped sweet potato, cover with water and an optional stock cube. Cook until everything is soft and whizz. Drop in chopped up (cooked) sausages and serve with bread.

She also like macaroni cheese with cauli blended into the sauce and broccolli mixed in

We make pasta with brussels sprouts and mushrooms. Cook pasta. Fry sliced brussels sprouts, mushrooms and garlic. Mix some flour and water and add to the veg with salt and pepper. Stir in some parmesan cheese and mix the pasta in. Really quick to cook and nice with fettucine but any pasta will work.

My DD (2) likes cauli and broccoli cheese. We just lightly boil the veg, make a cheese sauce (butter, flour, milk, cheese, a little bit of mustard), top with toasted breadcrumbs and bake in the oven.

If only I could get DS (7) to eat it....

Surprisingly DS aged (almost) 3 will eat most of those vegetables simply boiled or roasted. He especially likes broccoli (we call them little trees too!) and cabbage.
I do a stir fry dish with salmon, broccoli & spring onions which is also a hit.
Swede & turnip is just mashed with potato.
DS had pureed kale (mixed with other veg) as a baby and has tried sprouts at Christmas, but don't think he's ever had cauliflower... yet!
(Might steal the cauliflower rice idea!!)

My children (6 and 3) both love broccoli, even the stalks! I peel and slice up the stalks like cucumber, sometimes in sandwiches, or grate and blend into homemade tomato sauce. They like cauliflower as a beg with roast too, but they'll eat most things with a roast!

Well I never knew turnip or swede was a brassica!

We cut back on carbs a while back so have replaced a lot with more veg. Swede cut into chips, tossed in oil then seasoned and roasted instead of oven chips. Cauliflower is amazing as mash, rice, couscous, in a thick and creamy soup or even to make pizza bases. Cabbage in coleslaw or stir fries

I think my best recipe would be for my golden cauliflower couscous. Melt a good blob of butter with a bit of oil in a frying pan, add a handful of pine nuts and toss around till lightly coloured. Add your cauliflower processed to the consistency of couscous (you can it ready done in Tesco now) and stir round till slightly softened, add half a teaspoon of turmeric and season to taste. You can then add chopped spring onion, chopped tomato, anything you like to add colour and texture. We love it with freshly chopped herbs like in tabbouleh and serve it with salmon, roast meat or barbecues

Broccoli slaw (chopped up raw brocolli stalk- we discovered packs of this in Florida supermarkets) with aioli (or wasabi Mayo for grown ups).
Par boiled quartered Brussels sprouts: fry with garlic and ginger, add a pack of frozen prawns to cook quickly and then toss with sesame oil and soya sauce. Serve with brown rice.
Dippy eggs with brocollini/purple sptouting brocolli.

I add chopped broccoli and cauliflower to grated potato and make vegetable cakes, very similar to fish cakes and my daughter loves them. She won't eat them on her own though.

Cauliflower cheese rigatoni. I only learnt how to make a roux when DS started weaning. I think initially I ate most of it but he's got a bigger appetite now.

The best thing I ever did for our families vegetable consumption was telling DS that broccoli was little trees. My boys like it steamed with salmon and new potatoes, I do too, yum!

Broccoli bites - steamed broccoli mashed up then mixed with breadcrumbs, beaten egg and grated mature cheese, then baked in tart cases. Lovely for packed lunch.
Or broccoli pesto - steamed broccoli mashed up with a bit of cream and some Parmesan. Good with pasta or on tortillas with salsa and cheese as quesadillas.
Green soup - loads of green veg, cooked with stock and whizzed up then ham or kabanos added.
Kale or cabbage is great in shepherds or cottage pie, especially red cabbage.

The DCs love 'little trees' aka broccoli - I cut it into small pieces, toss in some olive oil and a little sea salt then roast. The edges caramelise and it is yummy. I have also used some chilli flakes in place of the salt at that is lovely as well. Same recipe works well for cauliflower as well.

Broccoli and cauliflower is great if you steam it till almost done then fry some chopped smoked bacon and add the veg fry for another few minutes and serve. Any leftovers get mixed with mash potato and fried to make bubble and squeak for breakfast.

The only meal dd (2.4) is guaranteed to eat is cheesy broccoli pasta.

Boil pasta and in a separate pan broccoli and cauliflower florets (I use frozen) when cooked mash the veg with a knob of butter, then stir through the pasta, add more butter then lots of cheese and stir until everything's melted and mixed through. We sometimes add ham and extra cheese on top as well.
