My ds is 13. We are having terrible problems at the moment, which appear to be linked to school.

All through infants and juniors he has been difficult for the teachers with regards to shouting out answers and disrupting others. I have been told this in every parents evening I have EVER attended.

He is now at grammar school in year 8 and things have gone terribly terribly wrong. All through year 7 he has been shouting out and disrupting others causing himself to end up with detention after detention. He ended up with about 13 last year. He lost 5 or 6 pairs of rugby boots and continously loses random things like calculator, pencil case, his whole PE bag etc etc not just once but over and over again.

Since he started year 8 we have had worse behaviour occuring. He punched a lad 3 days in to school and we spent a long time discussing why he did it, what he should do next time, at home and with teachers at school and he started seeing the school counciller. At the end of half term he punched another boy and broke his nose, he was arrested and charged on Friday and I just don't know what to do anymore.

I am thinking about going to the GP on Monday and getting him referred. I was just wondering whether anyone had any gut feelings what is going on as I have googled ADHD and he fits with quite a few of the symptoms.

What's he like at home?

He has always been 'on the go'.

Continously bugging his 4 year old sister and calling the dog over and over again.

Will sit still and watch tv but the minute the break comes on will start bugging everyone again.

He appears very immature for a 13 year old.

However, seems to be helping me a lot more recently.

Would definitely take him along tothe GP and ask for a referral to CAMHS for an assessment. His behaviour appears to be long-standing so now is the tiime to try to find out why he is beahving this way.

I would not suggest ADHD to the GP - the behaviour you described could be caused by many things inc Aspergers. But if he's now involved with the Police because of his problems then if there is a 'medical' reason you need to discover it.

Best wishes

Agree with wet august. Ask GP for a referral. You aren't being silly at all - trust your instinct

Would recommend 'Lost at school' by Ross Greene (and his other books) - have 13 year old and similar problems at school - is difficult at home as well though. Am trying to get SEN at moment. Feel very lost at moment but wish you well. Am also waiting for Cahms appointment!
