Hi all, this is the first time I have ever posted on a forum! I really need some advise, we are looking to move out of london to buckinghamshire,my husband is freelance but mainly works in uxbridge or at theBBC he mainly drives to work, we have 3 children 4,6 and 8 my middle child a boy has aspergers, but will be schooled in a mainstream school, any advise on a nice area to live with good schools? I would ideally not like to be too rural!
Does your son have a statement?. If not I would apply for one asap from the LEA in question.
Would post on the "Special Needs; Children" part of this website as that particular board receives far more daily traffic than this one does.
If there is no statement I would think twice about moving before this is in place.
A statement will move with the LEA in question; if you move to Bucks the LEA will have to continue funding the statement.

No we don't we have only just got a diagnosis, how long does it take?
The statement process I think varies from each LA. Milton Keynes process took about 5 months from initial reports to it being finalised. I can't actually remember who started the ball rolling for DS3, but we went through every report and submitted our report. We then went through the proposed statement and amended any phrasing that we were unhappy with. We pushed for funded hours and agreed therapy time. Alex gets the maximum funded hours which obviously pays for a TA. I have been happy with my LA, but I do believe that it helps to secure a good working relationship with assorted professionals to get the best help on offer. Anyway, if you decide that you like the sound of Milton Keynes let me know and I will fill you in on schooling.

Thank you for all your fab advice! I hadn't even considered the statement! I am a bit concerned about getting one as DS is high funtioning and not sure if we will qualify, I have heard they are difficult to get, is this true? We live in Southwark, any advice?

We live near Beaconsfield/High Wycombe and the school my DC go to is super. Children with SEN are part of the mainstream but the school also has a department to support them.

Plus3 please can I ask what type of additional unit - is it an ASD or SAL one? I'm a fellow Bucks Mum (bit further north than you) and am struggling to find a MS school with specialist unit attached that my DD might qualify for (she's not on the spectrum).
Sorry dulwich for the slight hijack! Beaconsfield/High Wycombe/Amersham etc are all nice areas (not too rural) and have access to great schools both at primary and secondary level.

If you can make it a bit further north over the border into Northants, then the ASD provision is really really good.
Caroline Chisholm is Ofsted outstanding 3 - 18 with a designated special provision but all integrated within mainstream

Hi - just seen this and I'm also a Bucks mummy and DD 1 has Aspergers but is in a fabulous mainstream school with an ARP. You will need the statement to get in though and it took us about 5 months and it was pretty pain- free ( much to our surprise 
) school in question is in Bourne End - which is lovely and quite a number of the parents seem to work at the BBC or need to get to various studios. Sadly it's not a cheap area and as there seems to be no sibling rule anymore it's doubtful we'll get DD2 in as we're out of catchment

Sorry have only just come back to ths thread - it has an ARP for up to 10 pupils. It is in Flackwell Heath (waves at jeanjeannie..)

We are from Bucks as well. Ds , who has hfa hasn't got a statement, tried twice years ago but got turned down (he's in year 8 now )However i have been told that bucks is now more aware that children with Aspergers need a statement. The thing is because of the problems at the start of his education we ended up sending him to a private school.This worked well up until year 7. He needs to go somewhere that is more understanding of his needs and away from a certain bully. Sorry to hijack, but can anyone guide me on suitable schools, private if need be ( thanks to Dad) but more than willing to look at other schools.
