Original goose quote

I found this when looking for something else. Perhaps we should get it stuck somewhere so newcomers don't think we're totally barmy with all our honking.

I came across this earlier and it summed up the way this board has helped me.

Fact 1:

As each goose flaps its wings, it creates an "uplift" for the birds that follow. By flying in a "V" formation, the whole flock adds 71% greater flying range than if each bird flew alone.

People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going quicker and easier because they are travelling on the thrust of one another.

Fact 2:

When a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of flying alone. It quickly moves back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird immediately in front of it.

If we have as much sense as a goose, we stay in formation with those headed where we want to go. We are willing to accept their help and give our help to others.

Fact 3:

The geese flying in formation honk to encourage those up front to keep up their speed.

We need to make sure our honking is encouraging. In groups where there is encouragement, the production is much greater. The power of encouragement is the quality of honking we seek.

Honk, honk... honk, honk, honk...... honk, honk... honk, honk, honk...... honk, honk...

zumbaleena Thu 21-Feb-13 21:00:57

oh now i understand...always thought why we were honking?

popgoestheweezel Thu 21-Feb-13 23:45:33

Its good to have a reminder. That original post really does explain what we're all doing here- supporting one another and honking like mad!

Ineedmorepatience Fri 22-Feb-13 09:32:28

Can it be pinned or something at the top of the board?

Some forums I have seen do that with important stuff.

We should ask MNHQ smile

frizzcat Fri 22-Feb-13 10:31:45

Support honk to get it pinned - HONK

NoPinkPlease Fri 22-Feb-13 16:53:08

Haha - I didn't know it was about that! I thought it was like "honk your horn to show your support" type thing you see on placards... Makes sense now :-)

PolterGoose Sun 10-Mar-13 16:30:24

I don't know if anyone else has done it, but I've just reported this thread and asked for it to be stickied because for many of us it does sum up the board.

Ineedmorepatience Sun 10-Mar-13 18:25:35

We could just keep bumping it, if we can remembersmile

PolterGoose Sun 10-Mar-13 23:33:26

MNHQ have replied, they say no to stickying, so we need to keep bumping

coff33pot Sun 10-Mar-13 23:52:38

Crawling Mon 11-Mar-13 08:18:20

And whats with the carrot?

LuvMyBoyz Thu 20-Jun-13 04:44:32

Ah, the carrot! That was a very 'helpful' professional describing exactly how to make carrot batons to a parent or a DC with SN, as this would help him with his language disorder, of course! hmm The phrase 'caring carrot' was coined to describe the completely useless and patronising people we occasionally come across.

Balaboosta Fri 21-Jun-13 00:09:01

and now I know!

popgoestheweezel Wed 07-Aug-13 20:56:31

There's been lots of honking going on just recently and it made me think to bump this so newcomers know what we're all going on about.

TOWIELA Wed 07-Aug-13 21:12:31

It's definitely the honks from this incredible board that kept me going during my darkest hours.

Honk! Honk!

2boysnamedR Wed 07-Aug-13 23:53:39

Ah! Now I get ya!

Honk! Honk! Honk!

hoxtonbabe Mon 19-Aug-13 06:08:22

honkity bump

DoubleLifeIsALifeHalved Tue 15-Oct-13 03:42:30

I'm glad I read this, I thought we honked because we're all too cool to cry or hug! You know, like a upper crust stiff upper lip kind of 'buck up old thong'

DoubleLifeIsALifeHalved Tue 15-Oct-13 03:42:53

thing not thong!

FancyAnOlive Sun 09-Mar-14 06:51:50

Ah! I did wonder about the honking! Thanks for that.

Levi174517 Sun 09-Mar-14 22:10:24

I haven't noticed any honking yet. I'd have assumed it was just making noise to show support.

It's a lovely idea - I shall think of SN board mumsnetters every time I'm at the park now.

And now the honks make sense! How bloody marvellous.

HHH3 Thu 27-Nov-14 21:31:10

Absolutely love this grin

bbkl Thu 27-Nov-14 22:40:54

I love that quote. And there was me thinking it must refer to some kind of verbal tic, when all the time I've been benefiting from the honks. Thank you!
