DS has got a permanent job at last! Whoop!

(44 Posts)

2012 has been a terrible year for my family with a number of horrible things happening. Earlier in the year, DS went for a job interview, quite a few of you posted in support, but he didn't get it.

Today he did!

We are totally thrilled and so is he. DS is in his early twenties and has learning difficulties and ASD. Apparently, some of the staff at his new place of work also have relatives with ASD and they have decided to take him and and help him to ease into the job. So he will start with shorter hours and then build up as his skills and confidence grows. We are amazed that a workplace is prepared to do this in the current climate!

Congratulations to him.

This post gives me the warm melties

Thankssmile I hope it gives people with younger children some encouragement. When DS was little, we were told he might never learn how to walk, talk or read or write. He can do all of those things and more.

He has spent the evening ringing up everyone that he knows with the good news.

Mind you, he is now outside making sure that his Dad has locked the car by testing every door three times exactly! grin

grin fantastic news.
thanks to you too!

Thanks for the flowers. Yes, it has been a very hard road at times and I am sure will continue to be. I expect we may have to support him a lot in this job as he finds new situations so stressful and then makes sure that we do too!

Thank you for sharing this, it gives us all hope for the future. I hope the job goes well and congratulations to your DS.

Yes, we feel really good this evening, which is very nice because the last few months have been full of severe illness and bereavement.

He just brought me up a cup of tea with a big smile - I am very ill so have to lie in bed every evening.

StarOfLightMcKings3 Tue 04-Dec-12 20:40:56

Brilliant. Just brilliant.

mariammama Tue 04-Dec-12 20:43:08

And I bet he becomes a prize employee, it doesn't matter if you take a bit longer to learn the job when you can display other strengths. Which he'll do by showing that he works hard, performs reliably and never takes a dodgy sickie grin

Congratulations OP. It this helps I am now pretty sure I have undiagnosed ADHD and nevertheless I am successful in my career. I am good with numbers, analysis, prioritizing tasks, efficiently working, straight to the essence type of person. I am very responsible. My bad points are that I have those days when I can't focus on what I am doing, or just browsing all day, and cannot interest myself to work. If I am stressed about something I have so much anger that I must hide myself in the toilet until I am calm. So, no one would know I have my temper issues and they would actually think I am pretty calm...

However.. my 4yo DS who is potentially ADHD or/and Aspergers too, manages to bring out the worst out of me on daily basis, and I feel both of us suffer and probably both of us need professional help.

It is his first day tomorrow, so we have our fingers crossed that it goes well smile

AtoZandbackagain Tue 11-Dec-12 00:00:08

Massive congratultions to your DS and I hope his first day goes really well. Best wishes. smile

nightcat Tue 11-Dec-12 12:29:26

well done smile
my ds spent a year looking and although had a few interviews, he only ended up with a voluntary job for a few months, so now went back to college

did your ds do any relevant training/college courses?

imogengladhart Tue 11-Dec-12 14:32:50

Message withdrawn at poster's request.

Thanks again everyone! Yes, he is now back after his first day. Totally exhausted, moaning a bit and very overwhelmed. Normal for him then. Anything new is very difficult for him, but I'm sure he will get used to it. He is very happy about earning his own money and is planning what to spend it on grin

nightcat he left school at 16 with no GCSEs - couldn't cope with exams due to his learning difficulties. Then went to college and did a range of courses for students with SEN. After he left, we got him on a range of supported work/training one of which offered NVQs in food handling.

Then this awful government got in and everything he was doing was cut. We were in despair, but we then got him in with Remploy. They did job searching and interview techniques with him and basically helped him to get this job. Now they have to continue to support him, I think, as they will not get the money from the government unless he stays in the job for at least a year.

nightcat Wed 12-Dec-12 09:41:56

thanks Gurl smile glad he had a good day, onwards and upwards smile
we are on a similar path, still at colege so job search deferred for now

Pretty bad day today. He cut his hand and ended up in the staffroom crying. So they sent him home. He ran off and didn't come home until late, so we didn't realise what had happened. DH is going to ring them tomorrow to try to sort things out. Think they assumed he had more skills than he actually possesses and he tried to do something he didn't really know how to do.

Has been a pretty stressful evening so far!

nightcat Thu 13-Dec-12 20:39:13

oh gosh, Gurl sad
better day today?

coff33andmintspies Fri 14-Dec-12 08:50:17

I hope yesterday was better Gurl x thinking of him does he work weekends too? If not I am sure he will enjoy relaxing at home it must be exhausting for him x
