DD speaks...

Arabica · 25/09/2008 20:05

DD is 26 months and until today, had only ever spoken once (she said 'daddy' about six weeks ago but has never said it again). We've been seeing a SALT regularly, and working hard on makaton for over a year, plus lots of turn-taking exercises, all without great results. I began to wonder if she would ever speak. Buttoday, I said 'ready, steady....' and she said, '...go!' And then she did it again4 times.
I am SO proud.

Thanks everyone. She can sign 'hello' and 'goodbye' at appropriate times (although only when she feels like it) and gives two thumbs up ('good girl'). I think she is beginning to understand 'more' and 'drink' (just like mummy) but she isn't trying to sign them back.

Fantastic Arabica. That was my DS's first word too! At almost exactly the same age. Excellent.
(He now has a very big vocab at age 4, although quite disorded).

Arabica, what wonderful news!

Forgive me if I'm barking up completely the wrong tree, but is this the dd the mumsnet knitters knitted a blanket for shen she was in hospital?

If so, where on earth did the time go! I would have guessed it was less than a year ago that we all knitted squares!

I might be remembering completely wrongly, and it might be someone completely different however . Apologies if it is!

Whahey!

Our DS2 is 28 months and still non verbal but I keep catching him almost blurting out a recognisable word, lately - then never repeating it. Each little attempt is such a Big Thing, though!

well done your little bean! thats fantastic!

we too saw our first word out of DS5 at the same age (hes 28mths) playing the same sort of games: bubbles with the salt and other games. He can now make around 5 signs (fish, bird, crab, boat and the latest: aeroplane!), he understands drink, car, and more but doesnt use them yet. ALthough he can sign a few, he hasnt signed them 'to' us, more just to himself. But theres understanding there. Im not competing i just wanted to share, to give you our experience. I think IIRC that our DC's are very similar. It seems that a few on here have very similar stories of first words...

Im very hopeful that your little bean will soon be 'chatting' away to you! Shes done so well! XXX

Thanks for all the messages. She's trying to say 'good girl' today ('goo-ger, goo-ger...') although DS thinks it's 'bru-vver'. Littlefish, yes, she is indeed the DD who received a beautiful handknit mumsnet blanket. She was a few months old when she got it--in the winter of 2006!
missc&s, that's brilliant about the signs. I can't remember whether your DC has/have GDD too?
ouryve, I got all excited when DD said 'daddy' about 6 weeks ago and then she never said it again. But she seems to be sticking with 'go' as she has said it every day since Fri.
