Forwarded from Every Disabled Child Matters

With the Budget fast approaching, we urgently need all our supporters to take part in our action on winter fuel allowance. If you haven't yet done so, please email your MP at

If you have already taken action - a huge thank you. Please pass this email on to everyone you know and ask them to sign up to the campaign at and then take action themselves!

EDCM is calling for government to help families with disabled children out of poverty by piloting a winter fuel allowance, matching that currently paid to pensioners. This is needed because research shows two-thirds of families with disabled children struggle to pay their fuel bills during winter.

We want the Chancellor to make this commitment in the March Budget announcement.

Thanks to all those who have emailed us already about this issue, we have taken note of all your comments and suggestions. And to all our supporters, thank you for your continued support for the campaign.

All best wishes
Pam

Its my MP who is tabling this motion. Hope it gets it this year. I'm tired of only being able to heat one room for dd. Its that or not eat, while in-laws get a heating allowance and go ski-ing with it cos their pension is twice what we have to live on.

I have had a letter from my MP Sir Michael Lord basically he is stating that the Minister for Disabled People Anne McGuire is saying that with DLA together with disability premiums in income related benefits and disability related additions in tax credits contribute towards the extra costs faced by seriously disabled people stating that "recipients are free to spend those payments according to their own priorities"
Sir Michael has also said he will make sure my views are taken into account and that he cant make the EDCM reception due to his duties as Deputy Speaker.
I dont agree with what the disabled minister is saying, parents of disabled children have a lot of extra things to pay for ie extra washing travel etc, I strongly think that disabled children should get the winter fuel allowance!!

I had a response from my MP today, stating that she is going to contact the minister for disabled people to get the governments views on this bill.

Also saying she will attend the reading of the bill.

But totally skirting around the question of whether she will be supporting it all not.

I did laugh though, as I had labour representives on the phone the day before asking who I intended voting for and I said not Alison Seabeck as she hasn't got the common decenty to respond to my correspondance and the very next day I get a letter from the house of commons, she must of heard my ranting, lol.

Lets hope enough MP's have the common sense to realise that winter fuel allowance makes sense, especially with the recent price increases!

yay, great, we can spend our huge DLA as we wish says Anne , rich arse, McGuire. whoop.

Hmmm, food or heating this month. I'm wracked by my huge choice.
They've got no fucking idea what its like supporting a disabled child, usually on benefits, andhaving to buy equipment because the NHS don't supply it. I'm so cross I could go pop.

Sir Michael also said in his letter that the Conservative Party have launched a Disability Agenda including seven key issues
1)Helping people with disabilites to lead independent lives
2)Recognising and supporting the role of carers
3)Tackling benefit dependency
4)Benefit reform
5)Safeguarding Special Schools
6}Ensuring equality of access to healthcare and
7)Dealing with the stigma of mental health

He says that th above will forma an integral part of Tory policy thinking across all areas of government.
What do others think of the above?
