Have been researching dh's side of the family now - they came from Devon too - Blackhawton.

Do you know it??

Found out his great grandfather died in Battle of Jutland and is listed on naval memorial at southsea.

yes I am Lourobert. Dh's aunt - man is her grandfather - lives about 5 mins walk from the memorial. SO I am going to ask her to take a pic and send it to me.

My lot are from Manaton, Plymouth, sampford peverell and around that sort of area.

Dh's are more the portsmouth, then blackhawton and charleton.

There's a huge naval memorial in Plymouth as well. I thought it listed everyone who has been killed in a recent war (will check).

I don't know Blackhawton. I'm still not sure about Manaton either (it wasn't Manadon was it?). Had a school friend that lived in Sampford peverell, it's near Tiverton....

some info on the Plymouth naval memorial I always find it so sad. There are so many names on there. Standing there it's inconceivable - to think of so many dead. If you give me any names you want to search for I can take a photo of them (have been crap at sending you that book!- but photo is easy as I can just email it!)

oh yurt - interesting site - seems one of his relies was on the same ship as my dh's great grandfather!

That would be cool - not sure if dh's aunty has a digital camera but she did say his name was there on the memorial.

That link you gave me has all the panels so I will see if I can see his name with that and let you know.

talking about so many names and it being inconceivable to comprehend...just on dh's relies ship - over 1200 men lost and 9 survived when the ship went down. One ship alone in 1916 - that many lives lost.

My grandfather was on the Dorsetshire when it was sunk (2nd WW). He survived but 227 didn't. He was in the water for over 24 hours before he was picked up. Apparently he sat in the oil slick from the boat smoking cigarettes whilst he waited.

Amazing what our grandparents went through.

My ex-brother in law lived in Manaton when he was growing up - it's on Dartmoor, exactly where you describe Eidsvold. His surname is Turner - wouldn't it be funny if you were related?

I haven't been there much - only to his parents' farm which was outside the village. Beautiful countryside - very wild. Will ask him more when I see him next.
