1 word=1 year
2 words together=2 years
3 word sentences=3 years

no need to worry at all, once that start talking it happens quickly, in 6-8 months you will be starting a thread headed......... do toddlers ever sit quietly for five minutes and stop yabbering on?

That's a relief to me, moondog! Was wondering about ds3's speech at 2.8 But he can say "I clean up!" Poor kid is the only one in the house who does clean up!

The HV came today for a development check and she is getting ds referred for a hearing test because he doesn't babble much either. I'm sort of pleased but also worried.

glad your HV is able to refer.
Do you have any concerns about his hearing?

I'm sure you'll hear loads of stories about other peoples dc who were late to speak but it doesn't stop you worrying does it?

By the time his appointment comes round he'll hopefully chat his way through it.

Pretty standard procedure Emkana.
Scores of kids get this and only a few have real difficulties..

I used to think that he definitely understood me but now I do worry sometimes. He does respond to his name, definitely. Oh I don't know we will have to see. Always keeps us on our toes this one.

Chances are, there is nothing wrong, BUT if there is,it is good that things are being picked up early.
That is the aim of a good screening programme.
In the meantime, ENJOY him.
