DS goes to a great Speech and Language unit. There have been rumours but today we had it confirmed, (unofficially ), that at KS 1 level it is to close. No new children will be sent there. The LEA are trying to phase down statements given pre 7. Our DS is the only child who would be left in the unit if it struggles through to its final month. He is Reception age now and the unit may last until July 2008. The teacher and two TAs are looking for jobs elsewhere. There is no other appropriate unit in the LEA. Mainstream is not, in our opinion, appropriate. What do we do?? Help, advice needed please........

Start by ringing IPSEA. Does your son have a statement? If not apply for one immediately (IPSEA will tell you how to). The unit shouldn't affect the number of statements given.

Is there other specialist provision available?

I feel for you- I dread this happening to ds1's school.

sorry to butt in - just wanted to say I feel for you - you must be really worried. we are just starting the statementing process for dd and I am gobsmacked when I hear the authorities etc saying things like they are trying to reduce the number of statements etc - WTF? This can't be about quotas or targets, if a child needs a statement or specialist care then so be it - how can they place upper limits on this? It makes me sick.
