Any idea how many kids on the spectrum in your local area? or mainstream school?

My sons school has 28 children out of 56 who are at varying stages of the code of practice, i.e. need intervention or have been identified as having "needs".

This is awe inspiring, thats over half.

On my street, after my child was diagnosed i thought he was the only one. A year later, i see that there are 4 more kids, 2 of which who have received a diagnosis (after having talked witht their parents) We live on a pretty small street, about 100 people on a dead end street.

Very scary

whats it like where you live?

In the area where i live theres not a lot of children, mostly babies and teenager. I dont know anyone round here with a child with special needs. I have 2 children with special needs. My youngest goes to a special school and i know there are a few children in his class on the spectrum but as the school caters for surrounding areas also i dont know any of the parents.

Quite a few, I think. At the nursery where DS3 is starting shortly, there is him and and three other young children, so that's four out of 18.

In DS2's class there are two children who I am fairly sure have an autism DS and another who is not DX'd but I think is somewhere on the spectrum.

I know of one boy in DS1's year (as well as DS1) who definitely has an Asperger's DX, but I bet there are others.

And I am not counting the children at their school who are taught in the autism resource base and obviously all have a DX.

This is just autistic spectrum, btw.

I don't know how many children are on the spectrum at our primary school, but I do know ds2 is not the only one.
I also know that 24 children started in reception in our LEA this year, which I think is a huge amount for one year.

Including my child there are 5 children in my road and the road behind me that I know of.

I feel like I live in a hot spot or something...it is scary

Almost 20% of the kids in the school I work in are on the SEN regester.

About 16% of the kids in the school my kids go to are on the SEN reg

Our local 'comprehensive' school has 1.6% of their kids on the reg

This isn't jast ASD, but all SEN

At the bottom of our street is a brand new all singing all dancing primary school complete with surestart,ante-natal,clinics etc but no provision for SN.

No additional unit or seperate part of the school and i was told by the SENCO a couple of months ago that out of the 400 pupils there are approximately 100 with SN and only 10 of those have statements.

On our street there is DS and DD with SN and a couple of doors down DS mate has SN and there are a couple of boys further up the street with SN also.

Ds1's school has just over 25% of its children on the SEN register.

When ds1 started there he was the first child they'd had in Reception with a dx of ASD. The SENCO did say though that there were a couple of children at the school who she suspected were somewhere on the spectrum. I don't know if they have a dx yet though.

I only know of one other child in the area with an ASD dx but obviously there may be more.

Out of 400 children in the junior school only one of these has a Statement. This I found out upon asking. Sad thing is as well that I know for a fact that there are three or four children in the year I am thinking of who could do with a Statement. Would think its a similar pictire for the other years.

There are no ASD children in the junior school - the ASD child I knew of who was in the infants was permanently excluded.

We have very few children coming in to secondary with a statement. About 3-5 out of the 50-60 children who come in on the regester

DS is currently year 5 mainstream, he is the only one with a statement thou i know two other children in his child with a DX i also know at least 2 others who i suspect have ASD, there are 96 children at his school.
DDs got to special school all kids have a statement there are 106 kids from 5-19 i would say 3/4 of the kids have ASD DX

In Ds school i only know of one other child on the spectrum but he is much older.

The school does have a high number of SN children but there needs are varied.
