Meeting today with LEA

meeting went good, it has been decided that to get M into the school that the LEA have been wanting to is not going to work and that we need to identify a new one.

Then the SEN manager told us that a statement has been drawn up and we should be getting the paperwork soon!!!!!!!!!!!!

There were a couple of things that were not so good.

Firstly the SEN manager told us that they have a letter from CAMHS psychiatrist stating that in her opinion M does NOT has AS, now we havent had any paperwork from CAMHS telling us this so they have breached the patient confidentiality act also, the psychiatrist saw M for 45 mins back in Jan 06 and performed the ADOS but didnt show us the video of it (we didnt know at the time that is what should happen).

Our psych has told us that a dx cant be made on the basis of an ADOS alone and that as M,s parents we should have seen the video of the ADOS and CAMHS should not have divulged medical information to the LEA without consulting us or telling us of the opinion.
So we are going to write to the boss of our local health authority and take that up.

Next the EWO officer told us that there is no medical authorisation for M having home tuition and that he would need to be seen by another NHS consultant to confirm that he does suffer from ASD and anxiety.

I sort of lost it at this point, i got out my "access to education for children with medical needs" and read the bit where it says that some children with long term illness such as mental health have to be dealt with very gently and that the most important thing is securing education and not a medical note, also M does have a medical note from his consultant earlier on in the year but they said it wasnt good enough.

The SEN manager actually surprised me cos she said NO to M having any more tests visits from experts as he has been though enough.

So im really glad that he is going to be issued with a statement but im not happy at all with the CAMHS psychiatrist and will be writing to complain.

Getting a statement is a major step forward, I'm pleased for your ds that he'll get some real support, although unfortunately that does normally take up to 6 months before its all finalized, will you wait until he's got one in place before allowing him back to school? Great step forward Jenk

well, we are going to have a fight on our hands because the school we want him to go to is out of the borough and not an LEA school, its an ASD school, with him only having one year left of primary school its vital that we get him into the right school so we,ll fight for this school to be put on his statement.

Its going to take a while go get him in full time if we ever do, we will go along with a reintegration plan to get him into school as we have got to be seen to be working along with them, im fuming over the patient confidelity thing though and the fact that they have told me that they need another letter authorising his absence as i know that this is not true.
