IPSEA or other? Help with Statement/School/Appeals/Tribunals?

I'm just after some advice from anyone who's been throught this.

DD has just been diagnosed with ASD - no surprise to us - but still it has taken a bit of a toll and I think we are reeling a bit.

So, now it seems we have a battle to fight. DD has significant needs which we don't think school are able (or especially willing to meet).

This means we have to get a Statement/EHCP, yes?

Can anyone talk me baby steps through what this means/what we are likely to have to do/whether we need to get support (eg IPSEA has been recommended to us)?

I really need just short, easy to understand steps really because I don't think my head can take too much at the moment. DH is trying, but struggling as much as me with the 'well, what now?' kind of thing.

Hand-holding definitely needed right now, alongside some Wine too I think.

Firstly welcome to the board Smile
Even when you are expecting a diagnosis it's still hard to hear.

Your miles away from appeals and tribunals etc yet.
The first thing you need to do is apply for a ECH. This is the new plan that has replaced the statement.
Check out IPSEA's website as it's got model letters and guides of how to apply. It's easier if you have the backing of the school so it might be worth telling them that you are applying.
The application process involves assessments from professionals such as educational psychologist, maybe speech and language therapist and maybe occupation therapists, depending on your child's difficulties.
The whole process is time limited, so the LA can't drag it out forever and you know when you will be due a decision.
You only need to go down appeals etc if the LA refuse to assess, refuse to issue a ECHP, refuse to name an appropriate school or give you a crap EHCP.
Not everybody has a huge battle to get a statement/EHC plan, it depends a lot on your LA. Cross those bridges if and when you come to them, don't worry about them now.
Take one step at a time as it's a complicated system and it can be overwhelming at times.
There are loads of experienced posters on this board who will be able to give advice if you need it.

Hi weary and welcome to the board.

I think the first thing I would do is make a list of the main areas that you Dd struggles with and then go in to school to find out in what way they are going to help her.

If they cannot meet her needs at her current school then they should help you to apply for and EHC needs assessment. If they wont do it your self.

I agree with fairgame ask any question on here, there is always someone who can answer it.

Good luck and be kind to yourself SmileFlowers

Hi. I agree that IPSEA'S website is the best starting point. You might however like to check out SOS SEN also, as they operate workshops and drop-in sessions for parents which I understand are very helpful and friendly.
