Annoyed at school's use of balloon-popping story which sent ds into total meltdown

Right. I know that in the grand scheme of things this is not a big deal. But I'm annoyed and need to vent.

Ds (SPD & anxiety) came out of school today utterly beside himself and ranting about his teacher popping a balloon. My DM picked him up and no explanation was given to her by teacher. He was hysterically upset for a long time and out of sorts all evening (still is now).

I managed to piece together what had happened from getting mum-friends to ask their dc, as ds was not giving me any coherent explanation. It seems that a PSHE story was being told about anger - I googled and found this which fits the bill:

"A power point based on the PSHE guidance on mangaing anger. Throughout the story on Arthur it is advised you slowly blow up a balloon every time he becomes angry, until eventually it pops. A metaphor for anger building up and eventually exploding."

Wtaf??! HOW did they think this was a good idea for a class that includes a child with auditory hypersensitivity and extreme anxiety? The icing on the cake is that it seems it was the behaviour support lady (who works with ds on emotional literacy) who was leading the class at the time. Ffs.

Grrrrr really Angry. Feel free to tell me to get a grip!

Oh Gee, it just gets better and better doesnt it!

If the person supporting him is so devoid of comprehension about his difficulties what hope is there!

Ironic really, that a story about explosions produced the very reaction the story was about (albeit in this case a panic-attack type explosion rather than a slowly-building up anger one)!

I just fail to see how they didn't anticipate it. If nothing else, he wears ear defenders and a hood up in school - doesn't take a genius to work out that = a problem with noise! Hmm

Well I got to the bottom of why he was so upset for so long. He had got it into his head that the balloon popping had been done to purposely upset him, in order to illustrate the story by causing him to explode just like the boy in the story. Arghhhhh
