Confused about sons status

Hi, can anyone tell me the difference between an IEP and a Medical IEP? Also what is Achievement Gap. Ds school saying Dyspraxia not a SEN???? Very confused.

Sorry, never heard of medical IEP but if your child has medical needs it may be a way for schol to check progress.

Achievement gap is how far behind his target he is, the purpose of the iep is to monitor that gap, make sure it gets smaller.

No neither have I until now. So confused & not sure I can even describe.

Ds has had IEP's throughout rec and yrs 1 + 2 and was I believe at school action. In June 2012 he was finally diagnosed with Dyspraxia (severely impaired on most things) he also has Duane Syndrome (eye disorder) diagnosed at 2 months. Was also told (Sept 2012) during OT sessions that his needs were far more complex than first diagnosed.

At his first yr 3 parents eve (Oct 2012) I was told that he had no status, wasn't even in achievement gap and that they didn't have enough TA's anyway!

School were being very evasive at giving answers which has resulted in 12 months of TAC meetings trying to establish his status.

1st TAC (Jan 2013) lead prof didn't know his status + senco didn't attend so couldn't ask her.

In Jan he was seen by SENAAT who wrote he was SA+ and "unless he has 1.1 support he would not achieve his potential".

"2nd TAC (April 2013) received letter from head day before stating he is at SA+ for his medical needs and has been for considerable time. Also he has over time been at SA for his academic needs. She went on to say due to progress he has made over ks1, yr3 staff now consider him best placed in achievement gap.

His teacher was 23 and straight out of college. How is she qualified to decide this above Paed, OT and SENAAT. It is also written in OT report (Aug 2012) "School report that at end of ks1 he has special needs and at SA!!!!!! Aaaarghhhh make up your minds.

Received letter in May from senco and year head to discuss IEP (8 months into yr and now want to discuss IEP) also any year band issues. When I replied I told them parent partnership attending also and asked for copies of Medical IEP and written information regarding exactly what additional support he receives. Asked if I could have these prior to meet to digest and discuss with PP.

Day of meeting, went to school office to collect papers as arranged and told meeting cancelled as year head off sick. Asked for papers as I could still meet PP, secretary went of to see senco and returned saying papers would have been available at meeting! Also whilst waiting I opened the door for and let in year head who was supposedly off sick. Told secretary we had arranged for papers to be in office for 9 as my meet with PP at 10 which I was now going to be late for. Secretary assured me she would sort it out and phone me to pick them up in half hour (fortunately dont live far hey). Received phone call 10.30 to say year head off sick and has taken with her, why when they know
I had asked for them. Forgot to say last day before half term which gives them a week to knock something up quick.

Just to try and finish...

First day back year head waiting in playground with crispy white documents dated Sept 2012 and I am expected to believe this Medical IEP has been sitting there for last 10 months. Why was I not given them at his 1st parent evening Oct 2012 instead of being told he had nothing. Anyway its now Sept 2013 and nothing changed. Supposed to have TAC tomorrow but been told y'day (and only because I asked) its cancelled, when I know it hadn't even been arranged. What I'm supposed to do now I dont know.
ps I have dyspraxia myself and have difficulties processing info and organising so its a real nightmare that is taking over my life.

Notsnow, sounds school is being a bit evasive so get on with it without them, You can request the LA to get assessed for a statement.

Been told by PP that I probably wouldn't get it if school don't agree and feel they wont back down now. Got Conners to complete and appt for auditory processing (which I think is his biggest problem) in couple of wks, think I'll wait for them then take your advice passedgo. I suppose I've nothing to lose and just found out I went to school with statementing officer who I recently done couple of workshops with.

Your PP spouts utter bollox!

Probably because PP are actually funded by the LA - tends to make them forget they are there to advocate for the parents as they cosy up to their paymaster.

If you think he needs support that school are unable/unwilling to provide then you should apply yourself - directly to the LA requesting that they initiate a statutory assessment that may lead to a Statement.

Don't waste your time dealing with PP liars and incompetents

My son has dyspraxia and the school told me he will never get a statement but I'm in the process of gathering evidence right now. He is on sa+ and still failing targets

School told me he would never get a dx - I did about two months later. Nothing to loose anymore

Agreed, don't listen to the people who say he won't get a statement. This is about his needs and if you feel he needs more support than the school can provide then that is reason enough to go ahead and request a statutory assessment. Clearly the school have been pretty lax in their handling of things so far, but make sure you keep to facts and no emotions in the application. This is about his needs and not about who failed to do what. Take a look on the IPSEA site for some model letters to use for the application.

It absolutely infuriates me that people trat a statement like some kind of precious benefit that only the lucky few can get. WHO THE FUCK sorry do they think they are? Neurologists? Psychologists? Paediatricians?

It's a useful exercise even if the child isn't granted funds. It is there to look at the child's needs objectively and ensures that the child is able to reach their full potential.


It is not an application form for a prize draw.

Senco is a very happy bubbly cheerful chocolate teapot and I wish I'd changed school. Feel stuck as Ds has social problems and he's settled there. Was feeling really disheartened and scared to be honest but feeling lot more confident. Going to contact LA tomorrow.

That's quite normal. Shame really, because parents should be able to trust schools to do the best for their children - it hurts to learn they don't.

Glad to hear your confidence is growing. You should actually be very angry at being lied to like this and I hope your anger drives you on. You would be well within your rights to tell that staff member that their behaviour is totally unaceotable and that you were reporting them. They deserve to be sacked for spreading rubbish like that - some gullible parents will believeit and their child will be denied support. It really makes me

There's a suggested letter on the IPSEA website. You need to make sure you tell them it's a statutory assessment of SENs that you want under the ???? Education Act. It's all on the IPSEA website.
