i have just been to get teh feedback from my sons latest Assesment. he has serious language disorders and his motor planning skills are delayed. he also shows various autistic spectrum behaviours, along with an overwhekming fear of failur complex.

anyway after hearing some more of the same stuff i have been listening to for the past 3 years ( my son is now 5) the specialist AND my sons school senco said that they dont feel he could thrive in a mianstream environment. i had begun to think like this myself recently so i asked how would i go about applying for a specialist school.
to which i was told " there arent any" !!! WTF!
because it is government policy for inclusion they are closing al the specialist school to save money. and there is now nowhere for my son to go.

i am all for inclusion...when it works! we have tyried it and it is just not helping him at all. in fact it is actually being detrimental to his eductaion.

i am soo mad.
sorry, just hoped that someone here would be going through something similar as i dont know anyone with SN kids.

This stinks. There are some children who cannot, regardless of the support given (and let's be honest few kids get the support they need), cope with mainstream. You have my sympathy

FWIW, I don't know of a single teacher who is in favour of this sort of stupid, narrow minded 'one size fits all' nonsense.

We found this out last year when ds was really struggling in mainstream. Turned out that our borough has no provision at all for under 8's and that what little they have in the surrounding boroughs in full with a waiting list.

We were lucky that he was still only 4 as that meant we could take him out of school and put him back in preschool where he was coping fine.

He now has a statement and so has full time 1:1 support (he only does mornings at the moment). He also goes to another school who are fantastic with him.

I was furious though that there was no where for him to go if he couldn't cope in mainstream. So far he is doing quite well but he had a really bad session today so we still don't know whether he will cope long term in mainstream or not.

They are closing our local SN school, and only the severly disabled will remain in a unit. Our primary is having ramps etc fitted everywhere & has just had a disabled loo fitted. This is fine for those disabled kids who can cope in a mainstream environment, but the able bodied kids with SN's will just have to fir in with their helpers (if any).
