Does anyone know what help we are entilted to for our ds who is 9? He has been diagnosed with dyspraxia and after seeing consultant we have been told he is like a yr2 child he has just started yr5. Any advice is most welcome. Thanks in advance.

Make an appointment to see your son's SENCO and Headteacher, discuss with them having him put on School Action, or maybe even School Action Plus.

They will have a better idea of what he will need, if you get no where with them then call your local parent partnership, their details are available from the local LEA.

I have rang snip and spoke to a lovely lady who is going to attend meetings with me at the school. Have got a meeting with senco and ds teacher monday morning. I have been fighting for help for him since yr2 and just wondered if anyone else knew if there was anything else we could do. Thanks for replying.

Talk to IPSEA as well - they may well be able to advise you if school are unhelpful. Have you ever applied for a statement?. IPSEA's website is www.ipsea.org.uk.

Haven't applied for a statement it was mentioned when we saw the consultant. I just feel sorry for ds hearing him say to consultant that he dosen't like school because he dosen't know what the teachers are talking about he dosen't understand. It breaks my heart.

Speak to school first and if they are not helpful
I'd write to your LEA immediately thereafter and ask your son to be assessed. I note that your consultant mentioned a statement. One would hope that they would put your son on a school action plus programme so that he would receive extra help till he hopefully got a statement (however, it can take around six months to get a statement once the LEA agree to assess).

I would try your damndest to get a statement and do not take no for an answer. A Statement is both detailed and legally binding and is reviewed yearly.

IPSEA are very good in this regard and there are model letters you can use. They can also advise you.

Thanks for your reply. The thing i can't understand is why the school don't want to help, ds is a lovely boy and has struggled the whole time he's been at school. He also has a anixity disorder and starts at a class next thursday to help him with that. I just can't believe it's such a fight to get help.

Just to let you know it went really well today at school the senco is going to put in place extra things for ds and there going to keep record of how many times ds has to be explained something the senco thinks we've got a good case for a statement and was going to ring the ed pysch to chase up when he's coming to assess ds. I finally feel like the school believe me and want to help ds.

Does anyone know if there are any benefits we can claim for ds as he is dyspraxic and has autistic tendencies?

If your ds needs more care and help than other children of his age (as he almost certainly does from what you've said) you may be eligible for Disability Living Allowance (DLA). Depending on your income and circumstances you may also be able to claim carers allowance too. The DLA forms are horrible but you'll be able to get loads of help and advice from mumsnetters about what to put in the forms.

I have received the report from the consultant this morning and he says he dosen't like to give diagnostic labels. In medical terms he would prefer to use the word development motor coordination difficulties (dmd) rather than dyspraxia. Has anyone heard of this? Thanks

Thanks for that tensing. The ed pysch is coming in to school tommorow to see ds.
