Hi I have just joined so this is my first post. One thing I would like to ask is there anybody out there who lives in Plymouth who is having problems with school & the LA? My teenage son (16) has Aspergers and we are living the nightmare. I would love to hear from anyone going through the same scenario.

Ineedalife Wed 25-Apr-12 17:06:59

Hi Everybody,

I already asked at many SEN topics but I still don't know the answer. Do you know any employers that are willing to employ adults with MLD?... What will you do if your children will grow up?...

Thanks

WofflingOn Sun 11-Nov-12 14:28:04

Anita, it depends on the company and the level of disability. Round my way, Oxfam have a very good record of employing teenagers and adults with SN, as do Sainsbury's. All companies have a disability discrimination policy that they must adhere to, but what are you looking for exactly?
For example, are you meaning sheltered and supported workshops? Or mainstream firms prepared to cope with a bit of reasonable accommodation?

anitasmall Sun 11-Nov-12 14:43:07

WO,

Thank you very much for your reply.

I don't have a SEN child myself just working 1:1 with a MLD child. I want her to be able to live a normal life once... I feel that at many SEN topics people tend to concentrate on "how to educate SEN children" but who will employ them is less emphasised.
YES. It would be nice to find those mainstream firms that are prepared to cope with a bit of reasonable accommodation. I knew about Oxfam only.

Not sure if i am posting this in the right place but thought i would give it a go.
Our daughter is 6 and dyslexic(although we havent had an official assessment). We have had to fight for everything we have got for her so far and have become very involved by stamping our feet and finding out how to work the system(or what there is of one!). We have just been given our IEP from a meeting with the teacher 5 weeks ago and on each of the three targets we are detailed as on of the people giving the intervention as well as the the teacher and ta`s. I dont remember ever agreeing to all this, only one of them, and am starting to feel like they are trying to shove all the work onto us as parents. I want to do as much as i can for my daughter and am open to doing additional work but i have three children and one possibly with asperges and a business to run so my time is limited. What should my involvement be- should i be doing anything? Help- any information from other parent would be much appreciated

There is actually a difference between SEN and SN, so I can see why this topic is here- you don't have to have any dx or SN to have SEN, but most children withe SN will experience some form of SEN.

I don't think MN should subsume this topic into SN, but perhaps align it more closely with the education section.

Hi i would like to ask for some info on dyspraxia and phonological problems. My son is 4yrs 8m and can not form his words right he miss off the starts of words and gets them twisted. People who are round him a lot have worked out ways to understand him but new people he meets can not understand a word he is saying. He has being having help with his speech for about a yr with a little bit of improvement with sounds but still cant work out what letters need to go on the front of what words no matter how hard he trys. The speech therapist seem to think he has dyspraxia but the only symptoms he has is the speaking she has not made it her diagnosis yet and doesnt seem 100% sure. He also cover his ears when the radio is on says its to loud and has strops over very silly things and gets very upset, but its hard to tell if this is dyspraxia or just his age! I dont no were to start to see if we can get him diagnosed with it/or not with it so we can move on. He is very bright and with everything else the school say is working at 5yr old level. But his talking is at 3yrs level. The school are doing a statement for him at the moment. Can anyone tell me if they have had anything like this with there kids and what the turn out was. If your child is older now how have they developed. I feel like im getting no were and dont no how to help him and im so worried about him getting bullied as this yr he will be starting infants. Thanks for reading this sorry i have gone on for ever

Hi everyone,

This Pinterest link was given to me the other day - iPad apps to help SEN children. It's a great resource that some of you may find really useful.
