CAMHS second time round

Dd was referred to CAMHS when she was five for anxiety, anger, obsessive behaviour, tics and lacking in social skills. We went through the whole assessment process which took forever but we were being seen regularly and she would go and do art sessions while talking to the member of staff.

Then when she was six we moved, 450 miles and although they referred her on the response I got here was "there's nothing wrong with her".

Three years of fighting with the GP who referred us everywhere except CAMHS (parenting course, outreach worker etc), I finally got lucky and got to see a senior nurse who referred her straightaway. We had a 90 minute appointment and we go back on Monday to see if they will/can help her.

I found the old report today, she just hasn't progressed at all in 3 years. She still has the obsessive behaviours, the same lack of social skills, the same anger, increased anxiety, need to know what's happening obsessively, can't handle change. And lack of sleep. She never sleeps through. Nightmares, sleepwalking. It's just so hard not knowing how to deal with all this.

I'm dreading being told they can't help her on Monday.

Don't let them discharge her. CAMHS are under so much pressure they just want to discharge. If they say they cannot help get in touch with your local MP. It is a national outrage that children are not being treated for mental health problems. Has anyone considered that she may have an autistic spectrum disorder?

Too late :(

They've discharged her and are recommending we go on (yet another) parenting course. This one is for people with kids with asd though and they do support throughout via a key worker.

She is writing to my gp and stating that after the course, dd should be referred to paediatrics for assessment and possible diagnosis.

She said the anxieties dd experiences plus the other issues could indicate aspergers. I've only got experience of boys with autism (friends kids) and it presents very diff e recently in girls. She mentioned aspergers several times so it's a possibility.

She is still in the system then and it sounds like they are going to investigate ASD. Maybe the system is different where you are. Where I am, they get a paediatric psychiatrist to diagnose ASD within the CAMHS service rather than go elswhere. Hopefully, you are being pointed in the right direction. Good luck!!!!
