What is involved? How do they decide if theres a problem?

noticed this was unanswered - I'm not an expert, ds1 had a BAS assessment last summer (5yrs11months) it was to work out if he was bright because he isn't doing what they think he's capable of.
I'm not sure what the test involved, ds said it was 'some puzzles' and 'talking' and he enjoyed it, the marks he got were close to each other, I've heard it can indicate a problem if a child scores highly in one area and not in another, don't know much about it apart from that I'm afraid.
