Hi everyone My dd is 16 and in Special school. I would like her to go to a residential college at 18/19yrs. She has autism, epilepsy (mildly) and quite a low functioning level, IQ estimated 40. She is VERY verbal, though her understanding levels are well below her expressive languauge, reasonably social, funny, gorgeous etc. She is also quite (very) anxious, finds transitions difficult, has 24hr care needs, and can have challenging behaviour and meltdowns when things dont go her way. She is best placed in small group settings, but able to access a larger social group whenever possible, as she is able to in her current provision where she is an asd specific class of 6, but part of a larger school of 140. She would primarily need to continue 'life skills', developing interests and skills, literacy and numeracy, and does NOT enjoy agriculture/animal care! I am based in Wales, but would consider anywhere in a four hour radius really. Does anyone have any experience or advice, specifically college recomendations? Thanks so much x
Thanks for your replies. I thought that the Cambian provision post 19 is residential homes rather than college? Does anyone have any experience of their Hampshire sites? I'll call the parent info line later but cant today as dd is home with me still. Coleg Eilydr is too agricultural based for her, she has an aversion to getting dirty..(even though we live out in the sticks!) thanks both x
eatyrveg thanks also i have looked at beechwood but felt it was restrictive and not enough to do on site, or opportunities for social interaction. am working my way through the natspec website but finding the filters unreliable! also its hard to tell what a place is like from a descriptive paragraph!
i was really hoping to get some first hand info from anyone? sorry for typos on my phone
