Slimming World

Slimming world consultant said my weight loss was disappointing

I've been at SW for two weeks, I asked my consultant a question this week about whether it's ok to split your Healthy Extras and while waiting for a reply I found on the SW website that it was (so you can have two half portions of different things...).

She then said you can't, so I showed her that actually the SW website said it was ok, and asked which information I was best to trust.

She then sent me a huge long message saying that my disappointing weight loss from the first week was probably down to me not following the diet 100% (despite the fact that I followed the diet 100% and lost 1.5lbs.)

I've felt really down since getting this message as i hadn't felt the weight loss was disappointing and I know I had been following the book exactly. Now I just don't want to go back to this group.

What an awful thing to say.
Well done. You have achieved a positive result.
Stick at it. I would email back telling her how rude and disheartening she was.

Don't go back. There are so many groups and leaders that you need to find one you get on with. She should be supporting you.

Is there another group nearby that you can go to instead? I thought the point of the consultant was to encourage and support you.

I meant don't go back to her group. Stick with Slimming World Grin

I tried 3 groups before I found the one I liked the most.

A 1.5lb loss is great and sustainable. Well done!

How awful. I agree with other posters that it would be worth trying another group. If you are not comfortable you are unlikely to continue.

It was definitely the most convenient group, but I think looking for a different one to go to is probably a good idea.

So nice to know I wasn't just stewing over nothing. It felt stupid to be so annoyed but I just couldn't put it out of my head.

Definitely find another group, your consultant should be there to encourage you no matter how you've done each week! In our group every half pound lost is celebrated and our consultant never makes anyone who gains feels guilty, let alone anyone who has a loss.
I'd been wondering about splitting healthy extras too, I will ask at group tomorrow morning!
And well done for your loss, stick at it!

This is what I found on the SW site, for anyone who's interested in that part:

slimmingworld.desk.com/customer/portal/articles/1346310-can-i-mix-and-match-my-healthy-extras-by-halving-the-portions-?b_id=1101

"Can I mix and match my Healthy Extras by halving the portions?

Yes, if you like - you’ll still lose weight beautifully! The downside is your speed and fibre symbols would have to be ignored unless your two halves had identical symbols. However, mixing and matching couldn't be done when there are multiple items in one choice, eg, 1 Weetabix and 2 Scan Bran. With all single item choices, feel free!

To keep the food diary as easy as possible to update, our Healthy Extra drop down lists only allow you to enter a whole Healthy Extra. If you do enjoy two half portions and want to record that, please make an entry in your food diary journal."

Like other posters have said, please try a different group & don't give up on Slimming World altogether because of this awful consultant.

Mine, in fact my whole group, is nothing but supportive and would never dream of saying anything like that.

A loss of any weight is something to be proud of, it isn't always easy and 1.5lb is brilliant.

Well done op Smile

Your consultant sounds horrible. No weight loss is disappointing. Weight on can be disappointing and even then group and consultant are supposed to support you.

It's worth trying a different group but a good group and leader is hard to find.

I've just reached my target weight yesterday. During all my weight loss I have only once lost more than 1 1/2 pounds in a week. Mostly it's been just 1 or even a half pound only. Some weeks I stayed the same despite keeping to plan and at times I ate a bit more and gained. My consultant has always been very supportive and the small losses all add up. Please look for another group. Massive weekly losses are usually related to losing water and lean tissue, not just fat. Slow and steady is healthy and sustainable. Accept all the congratulations here on your great weight loss and stick at it.

i joined a sw the consultant was awful. in the middle of a group discussion i was nearly in tears whilst she belittled me for eating pizza.

i know to an extent she had a point but i was mid twenties, single, out socialising on a weekend and my one downfall was a couple of slices of pizza once a week.

i wouldnt care, my weightloss was usually quite good at least average. she just didnt like me and had 'favourites'. i joined another group shortly after that.

i do think with these groups, as ive been to a few different ones, that some of them are very focused on the big loosers and noone else gets a look in.

Not only would I find another group, I would also forward her message to SW headquarters. She is just being spiteful because you are challenging her dubious knowledge.

I never got on with SW but I did do WW successfully - alone, online. I find most of the leaders utterly nauseating but to be downright nasty is a whole other kettle of fish.
OP, I am losing weight via 5:2 but I have never lost more than 2lbs in one week, and it's usually more like 0.5-1lb. It's the most sustainable way to lose weight and keep it off. Keep on keeping on Flowers

I agree with the others . My consultant is supportive when I have a gain. I would forward message to Head office. find another group

Can I also suggest though you do a food diary though, you may be one of the people who loose weight slowly but you may find something you are having isn't the right brand...Certain things can vary in syns , yoghurts is a classic one.

Good luck and congratulations on your weight loss so far

if you aren't very overweight then 1.5lb is fine for weight loss. And a loss is a loss. better than a gain!

good luck with the weight loss and as others have said maybe another group or plan would be better for you.

please find an alternative group. Her job is to encourage and support and to boost your confidence not erode it.
She's not there to say any weight loss is disappointing.
That will not make any body lose weight.
Email her back no tell you have found an alternative group as you do not appreciate hey ridiculous lack of support. You don't want to feel that the end of the world is going to come when you step on the scales.!!

YY to forwarding email to head office. Okay she may get into trouble but perhaps she should hAve given that ample thought before she started throwing put downs around

Quick update, I contacted head office, who passed it onto the area manager. She thinks the advice received from my consultant and online were both correct (despite being contradictory).

There aren't any other groups that it's convenient for me to get to, and I could do it online but I was so annoyed by this whole thing that I just started eating normally and tracking it on My Fitness Pal.

Feel I'm getting a better balance of food (though have to watch the portions) and that's working well for me now. I've lost a further 4lbs, even with my birthday in between.

Thanks for the advice from everyone here :)

Glad you are losing weight. They're idiots as they have lost a customer. FWIW I did SW for over a year. I switched to the 5:2 diet which has been waaaay more successful for me and I haven't had to pay anyone Grin
