Sleeping on a train!

Hi
My 6-month old baby sleeps well during the day, when he's at home or on the move in a pram or car. However, we took him on a train the other day and he wouldn't sleep on it. He won't sleep on me or my husband any more so once a couple of hours have gone by he gets very irritable. I can't help thinking that if he was in some kind of seat he would be able to sleep due to the motion of the train. Does anyone have any tips for helping little ones to sleep whilst on a train journey? As we don't drive going by train is our only option for holidays and it would be great to feel more confident about travelling with him.
Thanks!

Hi there, we regularly did long train journey's when our son was a baby and we used to set the pushchair up in the space between carriages. Unfortunately, it is the next to the toilets and it means one of you would need to stay with him (no where to sit), but you can take it in turns, so at least one of you gets a break.

i second the pushchair. we have had many a pleasant journey with dd asleep in her pushchair with no pushing from us involved. virgin trains tend to have a bike carriage at the back where you can park a pushchair and it's not in the way of the doors or anything. also, because it's at one end of the train you only have to get up at stations to check that no one is spiriting your dc away. and to check they're okay occasionally of course.

we also took dd aged 18mths on an overnight train to italy and stuck her on a thermarest on the cabin floor. she slept like a log, slept right through the guard coming in in the morning to wake us, then to tell us the train was delayed, then to bring us breakfast, in fact she only woke up when we cheekily tried to transfer her to her pushchair when we reached our destination. we are hoping for a similar success story in a couple of weeks time when we do the same thing (she's now 2.11), along with dd2 (5mths) in a narrow bunk with me. can't quite remember how narrow, so am unsure how good an idea this is. but i digress.
