How much sleep is too much for a 6 week old?

After having DS1, who was the incredible sleeless baby, DS2 has come as a shock. He does almost literally nothing but sleep. He is usually awake for 1.5 hours in the morning (not today though) and maybe another hour in the evening, but otherwise is only awake to feed (very quickly) and during nappy changes. He does wake a bit to show he is hungry but otherwise is spark out on my chest or in a sling the whole day, then all night apart from feeds every 4-5 hours.

Is this remotely normal? He was jaundiced but that is almost completely gone now. He is putting on weight well...probably because he never expends any calories! I can't believe I have such a sleepy baby.

As far as I know, if he is feeding well and filling nappies, you shouldn't be worried, especially if he is spending all that time on you. It's very healthy, they do all their growning and taking things in while asleep! You can consider moving him away from you gradually more, so that the transition to sleeping alone and going to sleep on his own is made very gently, and he can become a confident good sleeper as a toddler too.
Enjoy him!

Anything more than 24 hours a day would be a problem I think .

I would count your blessings and keep quiet amongst your rl friends .

my ds was like that after a non sleeping dd and it was a shock (in a good way). I would poke him sometimes to get a reaction but no, he would sleep on. just count your blessings. I always marvelled at tales from friends who dc's never cried etc as dd was such a handful but with ds I know what they mean. He is still that way to be honest, very laid back.. Much better this way round than easy first child and horror for a second..

More than 24 hours

Yes all is well in the nappies department. I know I should be grateful but it feels wierd! It is probably some sort of karma for having such a rubbish sleeping DS1.

Can you believe DS2 will even drift off peacefully to sleep in his crib by himself. DS2 still needs someone with him at 2.5.

OK so I will stop worrying and start preparing my sleepless mother speech for the benefit of RL friends! (He also feeds every 3 hours during the day...do you think GF is the father of my baby?
