She falls asleep SITTING UP!

10 month old DD is just learning to settle herself in her cot. We just tried CC for the first time last night and it seemed to work pretty easily. (after trying NCSS and PU/PD for two months with no success)

DD will cry for a minute or two then fall asleep, when I go to check on her a few minutes later to cover her up I find she's fallen asleep sitting up. This can't be good for her.

This pattern continued the whole night with DD sleeping while sitting but the real problem is that she wakes up every 15 minutes or so because she can't possibly sustain sleeping while sitting up. how on earth can I teach her to LAY DOWN to fall asleep?

forgot to add that when I try to lay her down gently from the sitting position she instantly wakes up and we start the whole process over again!

How long has this been going on for?
Is she still sitting up or sat up but bent over?

With DD she fell asleep sitting up for a few days, less than a week.

When you go in to settle her before she's fallen asleep lay her down into the sleeping position each time before you leave the room - eventually she will learn to sleep lying down. We had to do this with DS2 - when he learned to stand up in his cot he would stand up as soon as we put him to bed then cry out because he was tired and wanted to go to sleep but couldn't get into a sleeping position by himself. I just went in every couple of minutes and kept lying him down each time then leaving the room. Eventually he went to sleep. It did take a couple of nights but one night I lay him down and he just went straight to sleep! HTH

BabyO- this only started last night, guess I just needed some advice if I should persevere or abandoned ship, sounds like you made it through though and thats v encouraging!

firststeps- good advice too, I think I shall carry on then, it was so traumatic just seeing her little self clutching her blanket while sitting up and sleeping. felt so sorry for her

We'll probably try again tonight then and see what happens...
