Depends what you mean by sleeping through. With DS, I felt that once I didn't have to get up in a time when I would normally be in bed, it was "sleeping through" - so from a light night dream feed at about 10:30 until morning (6am or later) it was about 3 months. Proper sleeping through was about 7 months, although I could probably have dropped the dream feed earlier.

DD is 2.1 and we're still waiting. Sleeps through sometimes (ie her bedtime to morning) but very rarely...

ds is 15 months and is still waking, but tbf he has had cold after cold after cough and croup last month so was in hospital for 5 days, so his sleep pattern has really suffered.
i have a great routine, fed, bathed and bed by 7pm and he waits at the stair gate to go to bed but still cant manage to sleep right through.

DS1 - 10 months when he first slept through the night - he used to managed about 4 or 5 night a week. 18 months before he slept through every night. Before he slept through he used to wake 2 or more times a night so it was a relief when he finally did it.

DS2 - 8 months although he only used to wake once a night and almost made it through the night lots times before 8 months, i.e. 10pm to 5.30pm, so it felt like a completely different experience. It was much more manageable.

DS - over a year. He wanted to giggle and play in the night.

DD - 3 weeks - I thought she'd died that first time

1st child, dd, at age 6 months: from 8pm til 6.30 or 7.00am most nights. Sometimes would wake up a bit horribly early, like 5am ish.

2nd child, ds, at age 8/9 months: mostly 8pm til 6.30am. Sometimes would wake a little earlier. Just like DD, actually. Remember being horrified by DS. Everyone told me second babies were "easier".

Actually, now I come to think of it, neither child really slept for a long, decent stretch, until they went into their own room. I kept them in the bedroom with me til 6 months as per SIDS guidelines.

As soon as they moved out, we all slept better. Still glad I kept them in with me until 6 months though.

I am not sure that I did anything in particular. They seemed to stop waking when they didn't need feeding any more. DS1 went to sleep by himself from about 6 months so it wasn't that he couldn't go to sleep without feeding - I really believe that he woke hungry in the night. I know HV say they don't need a night feed after 6mths but surely that is an average.

So long as you know your lo can go to sleep alone without being fed to sleep, I think they will stop in their own time.

I shall probably be shot down for this though but it really is my experience.

DS1 and 2 - around 18 months to consistantly go to bed at 8 and not wake until the morning, although with occasional times when I'd wake to find them asleep in bed with me (they'd make their own way there)

DD - slept through 8 til 7 from 4 weeks until 4 months and then went through a growth spurt and started demanding night feeds again, and then she didn't 'sleep through' again until about 18 months if you define it as going to bed, and not waking me until the morning. Like her brothers she'd get herself up and come into bed to finish sleeping. She was alot clingier than the boys and didn't stop doing that on a regular basis until she was 3 maybe.

I probably could have trained all 3 out of getting up and coming into our bed, but tbh as it wasn't waking me or DH up, it wasn't a problem (and I quite liked early morning cuddles where we both go back to sleep)

DS1 : over a (long oh so long) year
DS2 : sleeping from 7pm to 6am before 3 months (must keep reminding myself not to get lured into DC3 on the basis of DS2)

Can't remember with the first two, but ds2 started sleeping through at 9 weeks (breastfed!) then stopped sleeping through at 4 months and hasn't done so since. He is now 14 months.
