Sleep

Newborn grunting all night / catnapping

My 5 week old DS has gone from having lovely long 1/2+hr naps during the day to just catnapping for 10-20 mins a time and looks so tired by the end of the day.

He sleeps well at night but after his last night feed at 3/4am he spends the rest of the night grunting and groaning for hours and wow it's so loud!! meaning I get no sleep at night and no chance to catch a break in the day.

He does suffer with trapped wind - could this be the cause of both these issues?

We've tried infacol, dentinox, gripe water, dr browns bottles, raising the head of the moses basket, every winding technique Google can offer.....

Also is there anything I can do to get him back into a longer daytime nap routine? He settles easily, just won't stay asleep anymore!

He sounds just like mine did.

I have no idea how to make the naps longer. Ds is now 5 months and has only just (past 2 days) started to do a long one in the morning (probably just jinxed it....)

And the grunting...omg the grunting. It's horrible ! Ds didn't stop until maybe around 10 weeks? I sort of don't really remembering it happen anymore. It used to really worry me. I think it's just their guts getting used to life! I didn't bother with any infacol etc, we just rode it out!

Oh god the grunting!! It drove me potty!!! My DS (now 6 months) would finally do a huge poo about 5 am but would grunt in his sleep for hours before. He'd be fast asleep as would my DP but I had really trouble sleeping through it. DS still tends to do an evil nappy about the same time but without the grunting first but he didn't really stop it until 3-4 weeks ago. Now he just declares morning as soon as he's done it!

My son was a massive grunter as a newborn. We switched to Tommee tippee anti colic bottles and it helped immediately. Nothing else worked at all.

As for the naps, again my son went from sleeping loads to 30 minute naps and to be honest his naps are still rubbish now at 9.5 months. I now let him nap on me as he will sleep longer that way, and have become resigned to never having anytime to myself anytime soon. Not helpful really...

Oh well glad to hear the grunting is normal at least!! It's unbelievable how loud it is and yes how DH can sleep through it

I've been to a sling meeting today and got a Moby wrap so hopefully he might nap a bit in there and I can get stuff done.

I've recently had to switch to bottle feeding and he seems to only take 1-2 oz a time so I'm guessing he isn't full, has a quick nap, wakes as he's still hungry and repeat Confused

i moved ds1 into his own room at 3 weeks because the grunting and ds2 lasted 1 week and that was only because i had a c-section and found getting out of bed a pain. Both are crap mappers but sleep through the night 6pm till 5am.

There is a growth spurt around 5-6weeks which can mess their naps right up

The grunting! My DS is7 weeks old and does this every night at 4/5am. DH sleeps through it. I'm considering moving him into his own room (DS, not DH!) but know I'd probably be in there checking on him every 5 minutes.

Mine naps well in the day but only on me. The sling is a lifesaver. It's the evenings where we struggle. He's been fighting sleep for 3 hours now but at least he's not screaming tonight Confused

You could try making naps and feeds really frequent. The EASY routine works well for that.

E - eat (full feed)
A - awake time (limit to about 20-30 mins from waking)
S - sleep
Y - you time while baby sleeps (apparently!)

Wake up and go back to E for Eat and repeat all day long.
