Stupid question about crib positions

First baby due in 6 weeks, we have a crib for our bedroom but it doesn't easily fit side by side at our bed.

Does the crib have to be in a certain position. (Ie. Vertically down the side of our bed, almost like he's lying next to me ) or can it go horizontally next to me (so his feet at the bottom of the crib will be next to my head)

It doesn't have to be in any particular place. Side by side is easiest as you don't have to get out of bed. That's the main reason it's probably most common.

Doesn't have to be next to the bed either.

The only place we could put the crib in our room was against the wall opposite our bed. It wasn't a problem at all. The cot went in the exact same place as well.

Our crib had to go at the foot of the bed, as that was the only way it could fit in our bedroom.

As pp says, by the side of the bed will be the most popular position (space permitting) as that's easiest for when baby wakes in the night.

Ours was also along the bottom of the bed
