I just wanted to start my TALK ROUNDUP

I'd been lying down with her making soothing noises for about three days

I would seriously say - stairgate on the door, for the "it's no fun, you can't just come and find mummy" aspect and then rapid return for the "wtf are you doing out of your cot, you are only 16 months old" element. Or maybe that is just me as ds is 25 months and NO WAY could climb out of his cot. Famous last words.

Trouble is that the cot bottom is still on the "high" setting because my back is too bad for me to lower her onto the bottom setting.

And she is a real climber - it's such a shock to me, her sister didn't even manage the STAIRS by herself until she was THREE, and this one has been up and down the stairs by herself for ages.

If she can climb out, sure she can climb in as well. I made my ds climb in while I was preg as I could lift him due to my spd. So I'd suggest lower the bottom of the cot, make her climb in and then put her in a grobag (v. difficult to climb out of cots in one of those, my 2 never did)

Aha, but cots ARE cages! If we can get past that one, then a stairgate to encourage her to stay where she is, is no bad thing. Once she really susses that there are more interesting things going on that being in her cot, surely it's all over. It would be a bit like the police saying "move away now please, there's nothing to see"
