Sleep

where should my 4 month old take naps

Having a debate with myself about where my 16 week of DS should take his daytime naps. Up until now he's slept in his pram in the living room. Most days I need to walk him to get him to sleep so just leave him in the pram when we get home. I'm hoping to break this habit by establishing a new nap time routine. I am considering putting him in his nursery in his cot - with a monitor on. At night he still sleeps in our room in a side by side crib. Thinking that putting him his cot might help the transition to night sleeps in his cot in a few months and will mean I can establish a routine for naps that can see him through for a while.
Do you think it's wise to out him in his cot during the day when he's still so young or should I continue to have him in the living room? My suggestions from those who've had babies who needed walking/driving around for naps in how to break the habit?
TIA

I started doing exactly what your'e suggesting with DD at this age. Naps in cot in her room, night time she was still in co-sleeper crib next to me. It helped get her used to her cot before moving her into it for night time sleeps around 6 mo. Prior to that she'd had all naps either in the sling or pram. We used to have to rock her to sleep for naps to start with. She eventually figured out how to self-settle for naps around 8 mo, I think.

Hi citydweller, thanks for sharing this. Really reassuring to hear someone did the same as we are thinking. Will give it a try and hope I can stand the tears to get DS back into some good sleep habits!

Up to you but SIDS guidance says all sleep including naps should be in the same room as someone else. I used the pram and sling and naps on me in front of the telly at 4mo!

Mine all went into their buggy for naps as when they go to the CMs thats the inly option for them there. It was handy to keep the consistency. They do prefer a dark space, so it also means if we are out and about I can cover over the buggy and they go over.

Well, they did. Ds is 18mo now and if we go out for the day he just prefers to stay away and go to be at 5.30/6 when we get back.

I put my DS down for naps in his cot probably from about 4 months. Before that he was in the swing or pram in the living room or out. Took a while to get him to settle in the cot and I moved the swing into his room first to help the transition. Self settled for majority of naps with a fairly consistent routine from about 4.5-5 months I think

I stuck to the SIDS guidelines with both of mine and they slept in a Moses basket downstairs with us for naps and before we went to bed at night. I am the only person I've ever met who actually did this though so I think you'll be in the majority doing what you're doing!

I was considering doing what you've described until I read SIDS guidance, so naps will continue to be downstairs in my arms a travel cot (Moses basket too small now) until 6 months. I read that 75% of daytime SIDS incidents happen when the baby is in a separate room (I will also admit to being hideously over anxious about SIDS though).

Mine slept on me or in the carry cot until 6 months. We followed the SIDS guidelines.

Mine went in the carrycot for all daytime naps until six months. It was either in the corner of the living room or dining room depending on what I was doing.
