Tell me it's fine that DS is sleeping on his tummy

5.5mo, strong, rolling at will during the day, wakes a lot at night. Tried the 'get them to sleep in the cot somehow' thing today and the only way it works was when he flipped on to his tummy. He went ballistic then when I rubbed his back, passed out cold.

He's fine right?

If I remember correctly, it's important to put them down on their back but if they then roll over by themselves it's not a problem.

If he can get himself onto his tummy then you can't do anything about it anyway, so no point worrying!

Once my two could roll they where both tummy sleepers. In fact DD slept so badly before that, that with DS I put him to sleep on his tummy after a couple of months. I know it's a risk but when I looked at all the evidence, tummy sleeping on their own was the biggest risk factor. He had every nap in a room with us until 1 8 months and that was even his evening sleeping. Slight OTT I know but it made me feel better about him being on his tummy all the time.

I used to spend nights putting my 5/6 month old on her back and keeping my hand there gently on her back so she wouldn't roll. For her to roll at some point, I guess it was just more comfy for her to sleep that way. I only stopped worrying after I posted a similar question on mumsnet and got these answers Grin

If he can rollover by himself its fine because by that point hes strong enough to move himself if hes in a funny position, my daughter was rolling at 4 months and used to sleep with her face buried into the mattress

Fine. I put mine down on his side but he always rolls onto his front.

When my now 3.5yo ds rolled onto his belly at around 6mo, I would roll him back onto his back.

Until one night I accidentally woke him at 10pm. 1am I hadn't got him back to sleep! After that night, I never rolled him onto his back again Smile

My DD has been a front sleeper since she was about five weeks old. It was a sleepless night for me as I kept waking up to check her but she was so much happier. I certainly wouldn't worry now that he can roll himself over, he's obviously chosen that's how he is more comfortable. I'd just let him get on with it.
