Hi all,

Firstly this is definitely not a stealth boast. I've paid my dues with DS being a non sleeping baby (day and night) for over a year to point I nearly broke. We went through hell Grin

But for whatever reason, from around 18 months he's been a reliable sleeper.

I'm actually worried he now gets too much! Around Xmas we stopped his nap if he didn't go down easily / show tired signs (2 years 1 month) as we found with a nap his bedtime was getting later and later.

Most days he's in nursery and gets up at 7ish (we wake him) and either has 1 hour nap or nothing and goes down again around 7:30pm. Fine.

However, if we don't wake him (at weekends or on my Thursday off) he sleeps til 8 or 9! He's just woken now.

So that's 13.5 hours straight! Is this normal? He seems to be ok being woken up on work days, not grumpy etc.

Maybe he's just catching up a weekends? Maybe we need to go back to nap? To be fair I quite like having a lie in myself and so does DH so maybe he's just a natural late riser when given the choice?

Thanks.

Does he have energy when he is up?

Sounds fine to me. My DS was also a terrible sleeper as a baby. Since he dropped his nap a couple of months ago we have had some very welcome lie ins - he now averages about 12 hours overnight but has slept 13.5 on a couple of occasions. Before he dropped his nap he slept for about 2 hours in the day and 10 overnight so roughly the same amount of sleep overall.

It hasn't crossed my mind to be worried about it to be honest! I am just enjoying it whilst it lasts and seeing it as payback for the horrendous nights we had with him when he was younger.

You might find his need for a nap varies. DD has just slept 7pm - 8am and she's 2.11. She only naps at the childminder's now as she has an early start on those days, other days she is not tired enough to nap but finds going without very hard! I would stay prepared to be flexible for a while yet (I'm not a fan of strict routines anyway). Unless it causes a problem, then there isn't a problem, IYSWIM.

Babycenter.com has a useful sleep guide. For 2 years old it say 10 to 12 hours at night plus 1 - 3 hours as a daytime nap.

My ds does this - still has a two hour nap too. He's very energetic once awake though! Sadly for me Dd is not so keen to lie in.

He's full of energy when awake, very active e.g. Climbing, running, jumping around constantly and at nursery he's very busy. He goes 8 til 5:45pm which I assume is quite stimulating for him for such a long day.

He eats really well too.

I'm pregnant with DC2 so kind of thin make the most of it Grin

He's been known to sleep 14 hours in one go.

I wonder if we had a whole week off at home he's naturally find an early wake up time

I think it sounds fine then. Enjoy :) (and send him round to give my DD tips)

Giraffes, yes we pretty much go with his ques. He was been a bit stroppy on Thursday so I got him down for a nap around 2 and didn't impact bedtime too much. Nursery are the same, some days he naps others not.

My 16 month goes down at 18:00 and wakes anywhere between 7-8, with a 1.5-2 hour afternoon nap. All babies are different, enjoy it while you can before the new LO comes along!
