So many different answer to this question but has anyone got any advice on how you can tell when the right time is?

Some time after 6 months is the official advice.

The SIDS guidelines say 6 months.

6 months is the minimum according to SIDS advice, but you can leave them longer if you want. I didn't put my youngest into his own room until he was 12 months and sleeping through, much quicker and easier to resettle him when he was right next to me.

Advice says over 6 months at the youngest. Beyond that, go with what works for you. We still have DD, who is nearly 8 months, in with us as it is just easier. Not planning to move her until she starts sleeping through.
